- "The Sampoong Department Store Collapse" was a structural failure that occurred on June 29, 1995 in Seoul, South Korea. 502 people died and 937 sustained injuries. This disaster was depicted in korean movie "Traces of Love". This video was edited from depicted scenes in the movie.

An independent inspector was at the building that day and told the executives to evacuate the building. They did not because it was a busy time in the mall and they didn’t want to lose the business. They themselves did evacuate.
I think they left only a couple of hours before it fell as well.
I saw a documentary about it yesterday and they said that one of the executives’ daughter-in-law was in the building and they didn’t even warn her!

Not even mistakes, just straightforward ignoring safety advice, he changed his mind about the plans halfway through the construction, wanting to add more floors and extra restaurant floor heating to the top floor, then fired the construction crew when they told him the supports wouldn't safely take the weight.
It's almost like he wanted that disaster to happen just for fun, for his pleasure. Someone couldn't be that dumb, he knew full well it would happen.
Some reports said that the original design was meant for office building. So they took out the columns to make space for elevators and hall. Since they also had to make space for shops and counters, they also put the columns on different positions which didn't support the structure at all.
@@snowyconfession Yep, not only that, but after they decided to keep the original floors and then developed the other ones, basically any calculation was made blindly, since now the building had to have heavy escalators, additional windows, an additional heating system at the top floor for the restaurant, and the massive cooling system that was decided to be placed on the roof even tho originally it was supposed to be on the ground. The load was too much and since the columns were not put properly with some missing even the necessary steel skeletons, the rare Pancake effect was produced.

This is as scary as it could get. It was based on real story and the last surviving victims was saved after 17 days. During the rescue, 502 were found dead.

I was in a 5th grade, standing right across the street of the department store when it collapsed.. witnessed the whole scene. I used to go there at least 3-4 times a week with my mom cuz it was close from my house and easy for a grocery shopping and what not. In fact, we were gonna go there that day too but didn't because of my english class. I only remember the top part of the building suddenly disappreared, then there was a huge noise with smoke then these 2 ladies running toward me bleeding

He died in 2003, only a year after he was freed in 2002. However he still didn't admit his fault for the collapse.
The very same day of the collapse, structural engineers hired by the owner of the building recommended immediate evacuation, which was refused, while the owner himself left the building. Such a terrible tragedy that was wholly preventable, if not for the greed of this man, who didn't even inform his own daughter-in-law to leave (she worked there also).

To think all of that would have been prevented had he changed the the building plans when he decided to build it as a mall instead of an office building.
My grandma, grandpa, and cousins went to this mall everyday after school to eat Wendy’s in the food court, that morning, my grandma went but came back home early. The person who worked at the Wendy’s was always super nice to them and sadly passed away R.I.P.

The food court was the most devastating. It had the most people since everyone was eating early dinner as it was 5:30 pm. You could see the actual picture. The floors were like accordion folds. The sad part was it was preventable, but human greed prevailed. The man responsible said this in an interview: “There was a great loss of life, but I lost a major financial damage to the company too.” Like loss of people’s lives were equal to the money he lost. May they all Rest In Peace.
This scene feels like it belongs in a final destination movie. Seriously though, it’s amazing destruction, much more realistic than San Andreas and 2012. Terrible destruction scenes. This real event feels more like a plot to a final destination film than reality.

@@Real_Moon-Moon oh. I see. I don’t know if it was, but there’s a famous picture of the mall. Each floor collapsed on top of each other and looked like a stack of pancakes. It showed how bad the devastation was and the quality of the materials used.
An entire country mourned for the loss of the 502 souls that were lost that day.
It remained the deadliest structural collapse for 6 years until the events of 9/11.
Thoughts and prayers for the families of those lost in this tragic preventable disaster.
The same country laughed when it's neighbour lost 17000 people.

This tragedy is so sickening. Cost cutting. Lazy. Ignorant. Neglectful. This never should have happened and those responsible cannot be, and were not punished severely enough. Such a horrific event.

Cost cutting was one but it's definitely greed. They deviated from the original plan of an office space and gutted the supports for a mall and added a 5th floor. With the lack of support, more windows, and more load, the office space foundation couldn't handle the mall

My grandma's sister left the building hours before it collapsed. She said she left because there wasn't air-conditioner and that summer was super sweaty....oh my god. I lived very close to this place, I was in 5-min walking distance to Acrovista (the building they built over the department store)
My mom said the same thing when the twin towers collapsed in 9/11. My mom left to go see my grandmother. If my mom stayed longer I wouldn't be typing this rn

And the Air conditioners themselves led to the collapse because they moved them on heavy blocks instead of using a crane.

I remember when my mom took me to the stores about a month before the collapse happened. It was the children's day in Korea (May 5th) and we bought a small lego set from one of the toy stores. Even as a kid I knew Sampoong was something special, with its eccentric exterior and super luxurious interior. Blurry memories of things I had seen of the store, together with vivid descriptions and images of the collapse I see today (such as this video) leaves me cringing and disturbed.
It's been 10 years since your comment, and I'm just reading it now. I hope you are well. I can only imagine how it feels to have vivid memories of the commercial center so close to the time of the tragedy.

The whole country was annexed by Japan, while Korean natives, especially little children, were treated very poorly. Children's day started as an awareness campaign (of an anti-colonialism rhetoric) that they deserve proper education and protection from slave labour, that they can pave way for better future.

Movie-wise, I loved how that fact detail were put into the scene.
We all should learn something from this tragedy: The quality of a building’s structure is VERY IMPORTANT.
A poorly built construction can lead to it collapsing even without an earthquake. This is a major example of it and look how many lives it costed. If they evacuated the building at time, this loss of life could’ve been avoided.
Buildings need to be built in a way so they don't collapse - what a profound and paradigm shifting analysis. What's your next project, explaining why it's very important to build good airplanes so they don't fall out of the sky?

It’s an insult to injury that the executives were only charged ten years for all the people that died. They didn’t even get a memorial site on that very location. Instead, the land was replaced with some average apartment complex which is probably haunted af by now.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol lived in that apartment until he was elected. And he is suspected of believing in strange witchcraft. I don't want to believe that the president living in that apartment had anything to do with witchcraft, but I would never live there.
This came up in my recommended because I have been watching videos on the condo in Florida that collapsed. I could never imagine the fear and the physical pain the victims experienced.

I wish that didn't have to happen. The Sampoong Department Store was huge and if you read the description, the result of casualties was huge too. It annoys me to see all these people (Who aren't from South Korea or don't know anything about it.) complaining about it like it was food they didn't like. You see that body count!? It was like the U.S.A.'s San Andreas earthquake disaster, but it was all just one building here! It just fell apart and crushed people who didn't make it out in time, as you see with the girl who was in her own world and the waitress who was calling to her.

tbh in real life it actually fell much faster than is depicted here, pancaked like a house of cards rather than rumbling for a whole minute, although there was an increase in cracking a couple of months beforehand as warning signs and a few hours before the collapse various bangs were heard, but when the actual collapse happened it only took 20 seconds.

For those who are curious, the cause of the collapse were the 15 ton air conditioner units on the roof overstressing an already overburdened support system through their vibrations while operating, and being dragged across the store roof directly above the pillars, which induced massive structural damage in pillar 5, on the fifth floor. Pillar 5 was one of the major support columns and when the vibrations from the air conditioning units caused it to reach its breaking point, which on a side note is what's causing all the banging and earthquake like movements, it buckled, and the other columns on the fifth floor suddenly experienced the full weight of the building. This caused every pillar above floor 5 to shatter, and as a result floor 5 and the roof above it collapsed completely and several hundred tons of metal and concrete started smashing into all the lower floors in a sort of pancake effect, effectively sealing the fate of the building
It wasn't only the air conditioning units (although they were a factor, 15 of them being much too heavy for design limit of the roof), but also the fact that the building owner changed the plans to include a 5th floor during construction of an apartment complex, and made other changes like removing structural columns from the plan to make room for escalators, and also changed the columns to thinner ones and spaced them further apart to maximise selling space. Lastly the 5th floor columns weren't even lined up with the other floors, so the stress from the roof was driven through the columns to the slabs of the 5th floor, combined with the weight of the AC units, the fact they dragged them over the roof that caused cracks, and the vibrations making those cracks gradually worse contributed to a completely unsafe design which was a ticking time bomb.
Lee Joon is criminally responsible for making those changes, and for firing the construction company when they refused to make such unsafe changes and used his own company instead. Even on the day of the collapse he refused to evacuate the store for fear of loosing profits.

@@zeroyuki92 Yes. There were core structural issues that were apparent even before they moved the air-conditioning units on to the roof. It was bound to collapse eventually. Unfortunately here it occurred before it was condemned and evacuated.

@@G1NZOU Also, the fifth floor had restaurants which used traditional Korean floor seating for dining. That required a hot water plumbing system inside the floor to heat it, which added even more weight on a floor that wasn't even supposed to be there, with columns not properly aligned with the lower floors, fewer columns than necessary...the entire thing was just a massive ongoing case of negligence and corruption that killed over 500 people in the end.
i cannot even imagine the amount of fear they had, may they all rest in piece.

Who's here after what happened in Miami? Looking to be about 145 dead. Like in Seoul '95 this has to be a case of criminal negligence. Buildings just don't collapse like this for no reason.
I watched a well made couple of videos by an (iirc civil) engineer (jeffostroff) and from what he can tell from his knowledge and what he could see, negligence is absolutely what happened. Specifically negligence regarding the pool. From video and photos people took before the incident, the parking garage (under the pool) and some worrying water damage. That plus the video showing water pouring into the garage just before the incident and the fact that that's where the collapse started, yeah.
They comstructed the pool fine and good (hell, it's still standing) but they were complacent and negligent when it came to actually checking the structures under and around it for water damage.
I'm very interested in seeing what the official investigation uncovers. It's certain there was some sort of negligence but I wonder who all is culpable. How responsible is the local regulating and inspection agency? How much of this is on the hotel owner's head? Is there a gap in building safety and inspection that has lead to the parking garage having not been properly looked at?
I'm here because of what happened in Florida.

This event was showed to us the first year in architecture at university. This building showcased pretty much everything that could go wrong.
Pretty much one of the dangers of extremely rapid economic growth, corruption, blatant regard of safety and codes, etc, all cannot dealt with in time to keep up with the demand. The owners and the company for safety checks couldn't even get a harsher prison sentence, didn't even get charged for curruption, etc, only the resulting deaths.

Apparently midway through construction the owner requested that multiple supports be completely removed and that they add a bigger open food court. The construction workers said that this idea was unsafe and could kill someone but the owner just ignored them and fired them. Even before the mall opened it showed signs of structural stress and cracking. Then on the day of the collapse a worker requested that the building be evacuated due to the rate and size of the cracks but the others disagreed because they didn’t want to lose their business because that was an exceptionally busy day.
What a terrible tragedy for our South Korean friends. We Australians learned about this in our evening news broadcast. I remember being totally horrified, as were my parents. That the father and son monsters who were so corrupt only received light jail sentences beggars belief! They are responsible for the loss of over 500 souls and the injury of thousands of others. How can they live with themselves?!?

I remember hearing about this on the news in the US months after the Oklahoma City Bombing and thinking it might be another bomb only to find out it was a structural failure caused by bad building design and changes made during construction.

They wanted to show mulitple different perspectives and different events of what happened. This is why Titanic showed so many different things like the people trapped in the boiler room.

Between This and the sewol ferry disaster....South Korea has so many tragic disasters....in the last century alone they went through being colonized by Japan and forced labour by Japan during ww2, partition, civil war, dictatorships....they have a lot of trauma. Also if you watch the first part of the film, you'll notice that the restaurant area she goes two is on the first Basement level, despite that in reality it was on the top floor. This probably gives the excuse as to why the building was slow to collapse in this scene. Even so, the whole building did collapse within 20 seconds, but they only expanded it out to add to the drama.
The sadest thing about this is that all of those deaths could have been so easily avoided. They already knew hours ahead but didn’t evacuate people. That’s what really makes me angry. Rest in peace to those that died. I hope they are granted heaven and I hope the survivors are doing well especially with that survivors guilt. The executives, boss, etc and people that knew yet did not do anything can go to hell. I hope they are punished in this world and the next.

Orginally this was meant to be a office building which shouldve been fine but due to negligence and greed they decided it was better to make it a shopping mall which added load to the building due to high volume and removal of structure integrity. Thus causing the collapse.
In relation to the pancake effect once the top level collapse and adds load to the next level it keeps adding.

This still remains as South Korea’s worst structural collapse disaster in Korean history. Mostly caused by rushed construction and a pressure to urbanize quickly from the government that it allowed structural oversights to be made during its construction. Namely the pillars failed to support the weight it had to carry for years, and one day the weight bearing became too much.
I just looked up at the reason why the building collapsed from structure failure and why no actions were made and.......I'm speechless. Very speechless.

For those who are curious, the cause of the collapse were the 15 ton air conditioner units on the roof overstressing an already overburdened support system through their vibrations while operating, and being dragged across the store roof directly above the pillars, which induced massive structural damage in pillar 5, on the fifth floor. Pillar 5 was one of the major support columns and when the vibrations from the air conditioning units cause it to reach its breaking point, which on a side note is what's causing all the banging and earthquake like motions inside, it buckled, and the other columns on the fifth floor suddenly experienced the full weight of the building. This caused every pillar above floor 5 to shatter. This caused floor 5 and the roof above it to collapse completely and several hundred tons of metal and concrete started smashing into all the lower floors in a sort of pancake effect, effectively sealing the fate of the building
Just reading about how Lee Joon knew the building would collapse and walked out to safety but refused to evacuate the mall is infuriating!!! He was an evil person!!! He left all of those people in there to die because he didn’t want to lose revenue. Probably one of the worst disasters in my lifetime.
On that very day, I went to that store to buy some goods. All of a sudden, The whole section of the roof above collapsed above me causing me to be squeezed between the wall, fortunately I survived and still I have a trauma

And this is exactly why strict building codes are necessary, and even more so, why they have to be enforced without being sidestepped with bribes or just being openly ignored.
This was really hard to watch. I can't imagine how traumatizing it would be to see it dramatized for those who lost loved ones or had previously walked on those floors.
After watching the kdrama Black, that's when I learned that the tragic "mujin mall collapsed" was based in a real tragedy 😢😢.

It's so terrifying getting a visual on just how hopeless the situation was for so many innocent mall-goers. They had only twenty seconds to evacuate before the whole building came down.
Almost 500 people dead because of the their negligence and they only got 10 years. This has to be one of the most traumatic events that happened the people.

+Besnik Zogaj That's completely false, it was completed in 1989 and collapsed in 1995, that is not a long time for a building to stay structurally sound.
The building's age had nothing to do with the collapse, it was all to do with the original designs being continually changed with any construction company expressing safety concerns being fired. The original design was a four floor residential, then it was changed to a department store and the columns were made smaller and placed further apart, during construction some of the columns were cut to install escalators, the added fifth floor was intended to be a skating rink but adapted in a hurry to be restaurants, which meant a four foot thick heated floor was installed, as well as heavy kitchen equipment, lastly the fifth floor columns were not in line with the columns of the lower floors, which meant the load was not distributed through the columns to the ground but rather onto slab flooring. The HVAC units on the roof were dragged causing cracks which were never inspected or repaired. It's just mistake after mistake with no thought to safety, whenever you change an original design you must always thoroughly re-check all the load mathematics again to ensure it is safe, that was not done and the landowner and later chairman of the department store ignored warnings and fired companies who refused to do unsafe work.

This was a huge tragedy, 500+ dead and over 900 injured. Watched a documentary on it. Absolutely awful how quick it collapsed.
Reminder that the only reason the people responsible got 7 years is that the mall was visited a lot by upper class citizens. High society members lost their wives or children. If it hadn't been such an expensive mall but one for lower or middle class, i doubt they would have been jauled at all
Well, thanks to 'Seconds from Disaster' we know the director took a lot of artistic licence in this movie. For starters, in South Korea restaurants are placed on the top floor of the stores. And that one was closed that day, due to the huge crack that had showed itself. And which started the collapse.

I live in Miami where recently a building collapsed on its own and I feel weird, this is the 2nd time I get a recommend video regarding the sampoong department store.

That was HORRIFYING! I've never even heard of this mall, and I lived in Korea for 4 years. I lived outside of Seoul in less industrial areas, but I frequented Shinsegae in Seoul regularly as well as the COEX and all of the underground shopping centres I could find. I had no idea this happened 10 years before I moved to Korea in 2005.
I stayed in a hotel just down the street from the site of this horrible tragedy when I visited Seoul in 2018. I’ve never heard of this collapse until today.
One of my fears is being in a mall or some major building during an earthquake. This makes my stomach sick knowing the story behind this.
Despite what's right or wrong about the movie's depiction of this, one thing's for sure: It was terrifying in every sense of the word. A real-life disaster where acting and special effects barely scratch the surface, where a movie could never convey the disturbing depths of what was once real. The sights and sounds from the movie probably sound calm comparatively.
The actual building collapsing like this is extremely dramatized in this scene. It wouldn't have looked like this. No building collapsing on itself would look like this, ever. Still captures the emotions though I'm sure

I lived in the apartment complex that was built over this a few years ago, i never even knew this happened until today.
I moved from Seoul 2 years before the collapse. It's hard to believe I use to go in that shopping center.
If I had seen this as a kid I would be too traumatized to go back to the mall.
Inaccurate, they closed the food court a day BEFORE the collapse because they saw evidence of cracking...those sick bastards who owned the place knew it was gonna fall, stayed home but opened up the other 5 floors to make a few bucks before they hoped it came down when it was empty.
Was a big deal in the criminal cases and social change that followed that's why I'm irked
The thing to remember was S. Korea at that time was like the US in the late 1800s, Rife with bribes, corruption, monopolies and unfair and dangerous business practices, the store was a house of cards from day 1 and then when they improved it they made the reinforced concrete WEAKER by cutting into the main support pillars to add esclators horrible tragedy but one caused by Greed and corruption which led to horribly shoddy construction. Luckly this sparked major and real reform in South Korea.

Actually they only closed down the restaurant where they saw cracking, not the entire food court. Also, several of the managers did go in to work that day, the building manager shut down the air conditioners that day and repeatedly told shoppers that everything was alright every time the building rumbled. Don’t get me wrong, corporate greed kept the building open that day, the owner was told to shut down the building by an architect who investigated the crack in the restaurant but he kept it open anyway. The managers knew something was seriously wrong but they weren’t expecting the entire building to collapse
One hour before collapse Lee Joon (the owner) knew collapse was imminent, but left w/o saying anything so as to NOT LOSE GODDAMN FUCKING REVENUE!
Later in his short life he gave over his family fortune as compensation, tch...some compensation.

Nice little detail at the start of the video of a woman fanning herself; the building's air conditioning had been switched off earlier in the day due to causing loud noises and vibrations, but it was already far too late for that to have any effect. The air conditioning was in fact a key part in the collapse; each unit weighed fifteen tons apiece and had been moved inexpertly two years prior to the collapse, cracking the roof surface and compromising one of the support columns. Two years of continuous use sent vibrations down through the cracks and throughout the building, compromising its already fragile structure by forcing the concrete slab floor around one of the columns to split away from it.
Wow this reminds me of what happened in Florida!! So heart breaking!! When are people going to be held accountable for causing destruction like this. I can not imagine what was going through these innocent people minds as this mall was clasping. RIP to the victims and their families. The people responsible for this can burn in hell!!!
I thought the greatest part of the ordeal was how the community held the executives accountable. Putting them on trial. Now a days, or at least in the US, the executives would have so much power and influence that even the media would jump at the chance to defend them. Never allowing the public to see the truth.

This really happened, I remember on the news when I was in my 20’s.
It's crazy to think this clip keeps the building standing longer then it actually did. 20 seconds for the hole thing to collapse in life but nearly 2 minutes in this movie

Sadly, South Korea is a country where a big bridge suddenly falls down and a department store collapses all of a sudden without an earthquake and a ferry boat sinks without a storm. I am afraid to visit such a country.

I only recently learned about this event because at the time I was only a kid and didn't pay much attention to the news. This happened on my birthday though so now I will never forget.
