Speaker Distance: Time Arrival (Audio Sync - Phase - Impulse)

  • I found a really nice way to set speaker distances using REW, which gives you perfect time arrival of sound. This uses an IR start time method. This doesn't use the typical impulse peak method. I think having audio arrive at the correct time is more important that being perfectly phase aligned at specific points in the frequency band. Because you can never be perfect everywhere. Again, this is why I think that when sounds arrive at the same time, it sounds better.
    Let me know what you think, thanks.
    Carl.

      Well done with this method!! 😊

    1.finding best speaker location

    Hey Carl, nice video again. Shows that group delay we talked bout with the mini dsp. Anyway the sync one 2 is a hand held calibration device you calibrate, it has a camera and microphone built in and it uses that test pattern to get sync perfect. I have one it works great. It’s expensive though, it was 4 or 5 hundred dollars can’t remember. But it works amazingly well for syncing the video to the audio, that’s its primary use case

      Question..
      What channel is being used for timing reference with those external Atmos audio files for rew?
      If it's let's say center, I guess you don't need to measure center channel for timing?
      Thanks

    • @hdmoviesource
      @hdmoviesource  Před měsícem

      Sorry, this comment got blocked by CZcams for some reason. Yes I use the center channel as reference, and that means timing doesn't need to be done on the center. But, you can still check the distance of the speaker I think, but I leave it at whatever Audyssey set it at.

    Hey, Carl. I stumbled upon this vid again and I want to say that Audyssey can only affect distance in a 0.03m or 1.2 inch (0.1 feet) interval. What I do is get them all as close as possible with just the avr, then I slightly move the speakers until they’re all perfect. Does it make a difference? Idk. But I like doing it. I also use a “binaural” mic placement. Meaning I use the center of MLP mic position for just the center speaker and subwoofer. Then I move the mic to where my right ear would be (my ears are 8 inches apart so I move the mic 4 inches to the right of center) and I do all the right speakers. Then I move the mic to where my left ear would be and do all the left speakers.
    I actually can tell a difference when time aligning using that mic placement method. It’s not a world changing difference but I figure why not

    • @hdmoviesource
      @hdmoviesource  Před 3 dny

      Yeah, I made a new video, and I discussed this. I didn't know it was 0.03m though. But I found a really nice way to get It timed well.

  • @dusshyi
    @dusshyi Před 4 měsíci +1

    @hdmoviesource Thank you so much for these videos that layman can understand. I tired your method L and R aligned. But when I try center channel, no matter what I try the time on the arrival didn't change. Do you know what would be the issue here?

    • @hdmoviesource
      @hdmoviesource  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Are you using the center speaker as the timing reference? If so, that will be why? So, measure the center channel with Audyssey as normal, and never change that distance. Then, everything gets timed to the center channel. That's basically what I've done.

  • @didi_p7756

  • @didi_p7756
    @didi_p7756 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Hi Carl,
    Thank you for sharing this method; as with all your methods, i wanted to try it, but i'm getting confused and not clear about:
    1) these differences between 'where it is' (-0,079ms) and where it 'should be' (0,062ms); for me that's a difference of 0,13ms (you calculated 0,09), am i wrong!
    2) reducing or adding!? You say negative reference-timing is too early, so we have to reduce the actual distance-value; if positive -> it should be increased.
    Why are you reducing the FR value in your measurement; i think it should be increased, because the reference-timing is positive!?
    Where is the mistake in my thinking, because the results are showing you are right?

    • @hdmoviesource
      @hdmoviesource  Před 4 měsíci

      I may have had some mistakes. If I see -0.079 I wouldn't change that if I was using Audyssey.

    Hey Carl, if you had a fresh start woth your system how would you calibrate?
    Calibrate Subs to Flat
    Auto Cal
    Eq Speakers
    Time Align
    Set Crossovers
    Phase Align?
    Anything else?
    Ill admit, I havent seen all of this video but I just want to understand the overall process a little more.

  • @deanotto1130
    @deanotto1130 Před 5 měsíci

    Measuring with two different mics and one being analog with the receiver and one with usb and a pc wouldn’t that account for difference between audessey and REW?

  • @paulsmith3440
    @paulsmith3440 Před 5 měsíci

    Carl, I find after calibration I have to change sub distance to get the best smoother integration with centre and mains, remove the dips around the crossovers because audyssey never gets it right, don’t you do that

    • @hdmoviesource
      @hdmoviesource  Před 4 měsíci

      I'm finding that raising my crossover fixes the dips. Might5 be worth trying. Testing some higher crossovers lately.

  • @ChadAV69
    @ChadAV69 Před 5 měsíci

    Hey, HD. I recently watched a video from Anthony Grimani on the AV Pro channel about Calibration. He says what he does (he's done a thousand or so rooms) is he plays pink noise that is 50% panned between the left speaker and center speaker, right speaker and center speaker, right speaker and right surround, etc. And adjust the distance of the speakers until the sound sounds like it's coming from right in between those speakers.
    I tried his method last night and it was fast and easy. I made my own files using Reaper and it's ReaSurroundPan plugin.
    He said that the reason he does all of his stuff by ear is because due to reflections in the room, even if the two speakers are perfectly aligned, they may not sound how they should psychoacoustically. What do you think?
