Myths and Misconceptions On Stem Cells: Poh Tan at TEDxStanleyPark

- Poh Tan is the Founder and CEO of Innoguidance Consulting, a strategic marketing consulting firm that helps bring innovative ideas in science and applied science to the marketplace. Her passion is for stem cell research, and she will be speaking about Myths and Misconceptions about Stem Cell Research at TEDxStanleyPark.
Dr. Tan earned her PhD from the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia in 2008; her thesis was focused on mechanisms and molecules that regulate hematopoietic (blood) stem cell migration to the bone marrow. She has shared her thesis research with both national and international audiences, and her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Stem Cells and Oncogene. She is the former Chair of The Training and Education Committee for the Canadian Stem Cell Network and the former Product Manager in the marketing department of Vancouver's largest biotech company, STEMCELL Technologies, where she managed one of their flagship stem cell product lines.
Dr. Tan's passion is to educate the general public about the realities and myths about stem cells so people can make informed decisions about stem cell policy, research and therapy - that isn't based on the fear created by Hollywood and the mass media. She hopes that the next generation understands the truth about stem cells and their potential benefits to humanity, relying less on fiction, persuasion and religion to inform their decision-making.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. I've come across so many explanation on tedtalks about stem cells. And this is so far the best and easiest to understand. She's great with explaining the STEM cells. bravo!

Sadly, there are many people out there who are know nothings. There actually used to be a party called Know nothings, But we still have a bunch. and they, sadly, want everyone else to know nothing also.

I think too many people have a misconception about stem cells and are too angry that stem cells could come from babies to learn that they don't all come from babies.
Thank you again, and I am so happy to hear that you can appreciate what the field can do from a therapeutic standpoint. Too many people think of stem cell researchers as freaky scientists in the laboratory trying to create Frankenstein-like creatures. Are you in the field of stem cells? In what capacity?

Poh Tan I believe in this technology with all my heart. Replicel is working on isolating type 1 collagen cells from the hair folicle and puting in back into the damaged tendon (tendinosis). They are currently in clinical trials. What do you think of their method? could they have used skin cells?

Dude what happened in the end ? I've just had my stem cell injection 2 weeks ago into ah injured body part. Its almost like nothing was ever done lol. Zero signs of anything but they say it takes 3-6 months to kick in

We are waiting and waiting for real treatments with stem cells. 5000 in trials. Sometime in the 20s market will explode. 30s tech should be better. 40s maybe real medicine will finally exist
