In this video, I go over reasons you might feel your music isn't up to par with other peoples. I try to focus more on songwriting techniques on this one over processing/mixing. DON'T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE SAUCE
1. Lack Of Exciting Transitions - Just removing the drums and not doing anything with your track in the transitions? Huge mistake as these are moments you can use to grab your listeners attention back and reel them into your song capturing their interest again even though they’ve heard the main idea.
2. Not Enough Contrast - A track without contrast is a boring track as it always sounds stagnant in energy. The question is how do we create the energy? Well think of layering up drums for the chorus, think of bringing in a new layer on the lead. Maybe bring a pad? Experiment and find what works best.
3. The Looping SOUND = This one is a huge one that I hate listening to as it makes the track feel super stagnant like it’s going nowhere. The biggest culprit of this are pad like sounds that always linger but never go away in a song and just stay.. The space never changes because of it and it makes your track feel boring as heck.
4. Lack Of Moments In The Track - You can call them OH damm moments but this is the moment that people will remember from your track. It could be a specific breakdown melody, it could be a sequence of sounds, it could be the vocal creating a massive space. Think of it and execute don’t just go through the track without em as this will also lead to a boring track.
5. Lack of Tension and Release.
Ever been in the crowd of a massive festival? And you get goosebumps as you listen to this beautiful track? Well you’ve experienced tension and release. Think of tension as a feeling of knowing something is about to happen and wanting it to happen but it doesn’t. Tension creates a feeling of unstableness that once broken with the release can be super satisfying. If your tension and release lack in your music you will never get your track to sound memorable and be not boring.

Songwriting and Contrast was a hugeeee game changer for me, it's almost the most thing once you've got your sound design and some loops going. Doesn't matter the genre, these two alone are vital
It is bro it’s crazy how much it can help with pacing in a track
That GRAVITY tech HOUSE Track sounds FIRE Bro..
Love that lead automation! 🤤
I feel personally attacked 😭😭😭 thanks for the video just what I was looking for 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Haha it’s the songwriting aspect of it
I am bored watching videos this week, I have to learn a few things still. I like your jokes and style, made me laugh making the learning a bit less boring
you are straight...no bla bla...i love it
That cutaway to the 4 Sausage Fatteners on the screen killed me hahaha! Great advice, glad I was trending towards most of this in my workflow in the past year from my IDs to finals.

very useful info man !! thnk you
Great tips man. I'm definitely lacking in all of these areas! Thanks for breaking it down so simple. 👌🏽
Very nice. Thank you.
Very helpful. Thanks
For me this video has the best tips for those producers who are figuring out how to go forward from a 16 bar beat to a full tune!! Thank you for all the videos Zen. They have help me improved in my productions and to enter in good labels like Reaching Altitude. :)
Yes yes and yes I appreciate you watching!
08:50 - I actually felt that!! Superb tips Zen, many thanks!!
Zen I hope you hit a million subscribers one day
My man is spitting facts 💯
Really awesome advice for creating a memorable feeling and avoiding flat repetition. Thanks Zen!
Love it. I feel like I become more knowledgeable every single time I watch one of your videos. So glad I found your channel.
As an old bastard I am learning so much in the first 5 min of this video. Music to the grid has become scientific. Let's look at the late Charlie Watts. Like him or not, he placed the bass drum slightly ahead of the beat, and the snare behind. Miles Davis told his band the note is a circle, it is how you interpret it and where you put it. Feel is the result, tension and release is in the groove itself, not just through arrangement only. Thanks for opening my ears, I know nothing about this music culturally speaking, but I am open to learning.
This is more than advice. So much facts. If you want to be different, play close attention to these things.
Great stuff!
As always! Helping us with good advice.
Glad you enjoyed!
Really love it
Thank you so much Zen! This has been an eye opener for me!
I'm into totally different styles of electronic music, yet I found so much valuable advice on your channel that still applies whatever the genre maybe! You're the man!
Yes I’m trying to shape it this way so anyone could watch and get something out of it
perfect advice. The way you demonstrated tension and release in that track is so efficient. Perfectly done.
Glad you enjoyed it ishaan
Very informative 🙏🏽
Great tips 👍👍👍👍
Glad you think so!
I love you dude
Niceee tips!!!! thx! Hugs from brazil!
That song is badass!
I got goosebumps bro
sick track!
Thanks still work in progress
Hi Zen, thanks for another great video! One area that I struggle with is structure. I use reference tracks but find that they are all different! Would you be able to to do a quick video on how a typical tech house track should be arranged? Thanks! :)
I agree with you in tech house, techno, house should be more transitions and memorable moments because of repetitiveness. You can’t do that in future rave though that much…Thanks for the video Zen.
I'm definitely a beginner and appreciate any help 🙏 I can get thank you!
we are all beginners, anyone that tells you they are an expert can easily get humbled to feel they are crap. This is art not accounting.
You make the catchiest music
Just building tension before the drop to explain it simpler
Sure, but don't forget about other sections of your song like before the start of your main breakdown, or last final drop. All the best!
damn those tracks are fireee are any of those released yet?
TRANSITION!
9:59 totally pro, great job
Thanks just an example
The pad is still there !!! loll
The damm pads
Haven’t watched your videos in a while but you really grew. Someone mentioned you used to cuss a little too much and I dunno if you took that into consideration but I don’t think there was any cussing in this video and you seem more professional while maintaining your comedic/silly tone from earlier videos.
Big ups to you man thank you for continuing to make these videos.
damm i did cuss but definitely turned it down a bit. Not an F WORD EVERY Other Second
Good tips as always :D Do you have any tips for creating own samples like any go-to processing and maybe something that people overlook when creating samples?
Keep up the good work !
Saturation and Space
ur the best zen world
Patches for trance track pls.. wow much wow
0:30 LMAO
Oh yeah there’s a bunch of moments in these video
@@ZenWorld 🤣
Damn, you look way different than the last time I saw you.. looking sharp mate ☺
I'm trying to get a pony tail to go with my HOUSE PLANTS!!
Zen please do tutorial on Purple Disco Machine style track.
1:06 this the hardest transition I’ve heard
The most important one is missing, be true to your sound. Understand every single step but avoid being a formula person because then the music will have all the elements listed but will lack that center point that is the expression.
I stay clear from this one with students until they can make good-sounding music. Sometimes their sound isn't the best in the beginning years and they don't know what to do with their sound. I think it comes as they get inspired off people.
@@ZenWorld Yes! This is a good video.
Btw I bought Deceiver recently and IT IS absolute fireeee Dude keep doing this stuff It helps so much🔥🙏
What does it help you do
@@elgionova its helping with the Workflow and I Just have good Sounds to use instantly. Just a great Tech House Pack🤷
@@elgionova good sounds niched and up to date for people to use. Making it super narrow focused helps make sure people will be happy with it as every sound is useable for them
💯💯💯
Basically doing little buildups as Transitions is catching the listener i guess
Hey How to submite music. The discord link is not working
Bro 9:59 Hits hard💯🔥🔥
Thanks dude works in progress
Beep beep ninja
3:14 Where's that bass from? One of your packs?
I have to check but I believe it’s Friends For Basses in Diva Deceiver edition. Just a saw well processed
CAN YOU DROP THESE????
What song is that after 4:42 "Not enough contrast in your music"? Did you release it? Sounds good.
Hey bro, you can find it on my Spotify I ended up releasing it under Tropica Recordings decent label ran by Siwell
that track sick! Is it outie?
It’s not done and I have yet to send out yet but when it does I’ll let you guys know
👌
Cheaa
Where are the vocals from at 6:40?
Splice my man!
hard working mexican all the way
All these cool tips but how come you only have 2 tracks on Spotify? Am J looking at the wrong platform?
I have 2-3 on Soundcloud as well from a while back but never released much under this moniker as I make a better living being a full-time sound designer and commission-based producer helping artists get their tracks finished and polished.
These videos are all made with the hopes that people will learn from them, but also to promote my sound design work.
This year I decided to start releasing some music under this moniker so people can hear my music who ask this question.
All the best.
1:21 what song is that?
Not out yet still trying to get it on a label
Great video, all that’s missing is a hair tie
still in the works
i swear zen hates pads xD
To be fair I do use them in my tracks but fuck I make that mistake a ton it sucks!
@@ZenWorld i can relate
xD
Zen how come you don't release your own music? You would 100% be a top chart DJ
Trying at the moment but not trying to be a dj just for social proof
@@ZenWorld I can respect that, not saying you should for the clout. I just feel that you could put out tracks that would definitely make top lists, perhaps another source of passive income. Don't have to run the gauntlet of actually DJ'ing and touring ;)
bro, why he eats the microphone
;)
Why is your audio glitching so often in so many videos, I like how you don’t even care lmao
Probably the push to talk no other way I suck at push to talk but if you are talking about the part of VOY DALE song I left it like that on purpose lol idk why
@Vic LTD Yes, that is what I meant. All the content creators putting the efforts in the hardware, but you know where to put yours 👌
69 dislikes from people who use fl studio and soundgoodizer for mastering
The title triggers peoples which leads to more clicks but also I open myself up to attacks which is fine since I have to play the CZcams game to get clicks.
@@ZenWorld like are now 65 this trick works lmaoo
I can't believe your wife let you in the house?.....what happened to the shed?....what the F is going on with this world?
SHe's starting to get mad at the constant bass BOOM Sound
First and second example is not the same and that is misleading. Use same example and do stuff you done with second example, it will sound out of place and amateurish since energy of your first example is too low, and transition you done in second drop will destroy it. This is bad example, you don't even have the same elements in first and second drop lol
It's not meant for people to copy my transition into their tracks. It's meant to open people's eyes that getting rid of drums and just putting a drum fill isn't a good transition; it's a lazy one. Hear any good tracks from producers you admire, and you will hear them automate their sounds. Example: Gorgon City - You've Done Enough every 8 bars on the main drop, they do a fill where drums go away, but the BASS opens up and gets delayed. Gorgon City just doesn't put a drum fill for the sake of it and that was the point of that section of the video.
IT'S TIME TO STOP
What happened to your sexy beard ? 🤔
How about not making a bastardised, boring generic music that’s been around since the the naughties and actually trying to be unique and make your own style/genre???
😂 damm what got you so riled up?
