If I remember correctly two seasons ago at Old Trafford game between ManUtd & Arsenal, DeGea was injured in the middle of the game down on the ground and Arsenal didn’t stop and scored the game with a shot seeing DeGea down injured. The referee allowed the goal because in the eyes of the law it was a goal. Foul wasn’t committed. DeGea injury was muscle pull (or something like that). @redlongford
Referees are literally required to use the “spirit of the game” while interpreting decisions. It’s in the rule book and is not just some buzzword people are throwing around. In short, it means to use objective reasoning and situational awareness to enforce the laws of the game. What a lot of people don’t understand is the literal laws of the game are never fully enforced each game. Easy examples are throw-ins and free kicks regularly being taken 5-10 yards from where they should technically be taken. Goalkeepers holding the ball for more than 6 seconds. Players encroaching onto the opponents half before the ball is touched on kickoffs. The ball rolling on quick restarts when teams are trying to catch the other team off guard. Gabriel’s handball was technically a penalty kick by the literal letter of the law. But the referee realized that something as simple as Gabriel not properly hearing the whistle could have created the confusion. In those types of situations, players are very often given the benefit of the doubt. It happens all the time but most people completely ignore it.

Not hearing the whistle would not be an excuse for Gabriel, since usually refs don't whistle before a goal kick. Only reason the ref did was because the match was interrupted before because of a substitution. So when Raya plays the ball, like he did all the times before, Gabriel should never have thought he can use his hands to touch the ball. It was a true brain fart, like they rarely happens at that level, and like they very rarely are not punished.
