I can't thank you enough for not defaulting to the "dae tilke bad" argument. He is very capable of making great racing circuits (see Bilster Berg, Atlanta Motorsports Park, Sepang, COTA, Bahrain, etc) but often his clients prefer things outside his creative mind. I'm also happy not to see COTA on this list. However, I don't think he ruined Hockenheim; the old layout would have been rather poor for modern F1.
Tilke isn't the one that called for the old Hockenheim to be demolished. And even then, the old circuit, whilst it was spectacular, was not that great for racing. I'll get hate for that. But, the new Hockenheim has proven to be a fantastic track for driving and racing. COTA and Bahrain have also been great, Sepang is an all-round great track, and of course Atlanta and that mini-Nurburgring Blisterberg are great, too. And of course, Istanbul Park. Tilke can design a track. But, he's been an easy target for years, unfortunately.

As both a native Metro Detroiter and second-generation F1 fan, I have great stories from my dad and uncle about not only the racing, but the idiots in the grandstands who thought they knew everything. You think the track was bad? The people were worse! Excellent video!
Monaco isn't the most entertaining but as it has a big historical part, as drivers have to be clinical, as the ambiance is special, it makes the track unique and seeing it IRL is just incredible.
If Monaco wasn't an Elite playground, it would have been dumped years ago. As modern F1 is all about money laundering, where better to shove it in our faces than Monaco.
Sure Korea, Buddh, Valencia and Marina Bay might not be the best, but I love them! Their great fun to drive around in practise and qualifying. However, as mentioned, they are terrible for racing!
@David Shon Yeah, I mean why not rep your national track? I mean I'm 1st Gen Hungarian and I love the Hungaroring. Arguably another track that's really fun yet doesn't produce the best racing (In F1 at least). I'm also Canadian so I technically have two home GPs haha!
Marina Bay ain't too bad. It's got some good races like 2019and 2017 and it's far more wider than Monaco. From a racing perspective, I'd give it a 7.5/10. At least the place does have overtaking opportunities unlike some places and it does have crashes (some circuits are just so boring there isn't even a simple light collision that makes a DNF. Combined with the time and the experiences available, I'd give it a 9/10. (maybe i'm saying this cuz I'm Malaysian and we lost Sepang so Singapore is the closest.
I wonder how stock cars would run at these. I'm sure that FIA would learn to laugh at themselves if NASCAR decided to hold exhibition races at these tracks. Stock cars can run great at road courses, but even the best wouldn't be able to wheel a stock car at these tracks. The problems F1 drivers had at these would probably be multiplied tenfold for NASCAR Stock Cars
A NASCAR driver has some of the best car control skills of any racing driver worldwide! Most has a dirt track history! Most guys in Europe never experience a race car that will change during a race! As an American, I can not argue with this list. you can not take the success of one street course (Long Beach), and expect it to work everywhere (Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Dallas). There are all kinds of beautiful road courses that could have been used ( Sonoma, Laguna Seca, etc).
Absolutely. And even after all that, they still tried getting a street course in Port Imperial, Flushing Meadows, and now Miami. Meanwhile, as you said, there are tracks such as Laguna Seca, Sonoma and even Road America that could be great, if brought up to F1 standard.
@@thejoshrevell Curious if a new track being built in Arizona would be a better option then Miami. By the end of the creation of the circuit it will be a 4.25 mi circuit.
And Detroit was removed due to cost to team owners as the track much like 1980 to late 2000s Michigan International Speedway was high attrition due to harsh winters. It didn't matter how wide that racing surface was or thick, the frost made it bumpy and very high attrition as seen by IndyCar/CART at MIS.
Bro? Paul ricard has to be number 1. Due to it's stupid arbitrary lines drawn on a supermarket car park look. I'm not sure it was even that great in the 80s, it just had one scary corner. But since they swathed it in that tarmac it's a literal turn off from me
Brum Racing if they hadn't added all the runoff, the track would've had to shut down. Having run off, therefore being a good test facility, gave the circuit the money to survive.
@@Ewane still nearly killed Alex Wurz in a huge accident That tarmac is zero use in the rain, or if brakes fail, or if there is a wheel off the car or they're already upside down when they hit it.... If there was gravel there it wouldn't be a great layout but at least it would be interesting
@@cdname47 a gravel trap would make it just like every other track, at least with the stripes it is different to every track. Plus the stripes have abrasive paint so slow the cars down if you go over them
@@thejoshrevell Surely Paul Ricard wouldn't have qualified for this list under the conditions you set out at the beginning of the video - The ugly tarmac runoff at every corner didn't exist in the 1970s when the circuit was first built and used for F1. I'd consider the current version to be disqualified from this list for the same reasons as Tilke modified tracks like Hockenheim, since the runoff is such a major aspect of the current layout. I do think it's a poor circuit for F1 racing today. But was it a bad circuit historically? It's a below average circuit for racing, but it still has Signes corner and the Mistral straight; It had some good races historically, such as Leyton House nearly winning in 1990. That's more noteworthy bits of track and classic races than Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, Valencia and Korea ever produced. It's the ridiculous amount of runoff and the current F1 cars that make the circuit so poor for racing nowadays, rather than the layout producing bad racing. And since it has a contract for F1 through to 2024 (I believe? Correct me if that's wrong), it's worth considering if it'll be a bad circuit for future F1 cars. I think in 2021 once we get new cars that can follow more closely, T1 and particularly T4 will become overtaking spots for F1 cars again. I'd expect to see some battles that start at T1 or T4 and continue down to the Mistral chicane under those circumstances. I'd expect it to be one of the most improved circuits from 2021, even if it's unlikely to produce a classic race in dry conditions. I can't say the same for other tracks on this list like Sochi and Abu Dhabi, or even a contender like Shanghai. That's a stronger defence of Paul Ricard than I can make for most of this list, or the 'honourable mentions'. I'm not saying it's a great circuit like Spa or Monza. But it's not as terrible as recent history would have you believe, either. Leaving it off the list is the right decision IMO. I think this vid is well researched and has actually done a pretty good job of avoiding recency bias tbh - It would've been easy to miss Nivelles or Zeltweg, since they each only hosted one race, or have a list featuring Paul Ricard, Abu Dhabi, Shanghai, and Tilkedromes that fell off the calendar in the last decade.
Realistically the only tracks on the calendar where passing at or after the last turn on the final lap is a possibility are Bahrain, Montreal, Baku, Spa, Suzuka (if we call the chicane the last turn), and Brazil. In every other case, the last passing opportunity is multiple turns away from the finish.
I can forgive Singapore, firstly for getting to see Vettel wipe out the front row of the grid in the rain, and, secondly, for the fact that weird things, like really out-of-the-blue stuff, seem to happen there very regularly. Unfortunately, as F1 is at the moment, we're not really going to get good racing anywhere, and the powers-that-be seem to be absolutely intent on making sure the sort of wheel-to-wheel, close quarters, knock down and drag out racing we saw in the '80s and part of the '90s never happens again, which is a damn shame...
I completely disagree with Josh on Marina Bay; I think it's the greatest street circuit in the world. Or at least, the greatest one that F1 could race on. Macau takes a lot of beating, but that's barely wide enough for GT racing, leave alone F1, leaving us with Marina Bay and Baku, and I múch prefer the former.
I tend to disagree with Singapore being a bad track. Sure, the first bit of the race is boring since it's like a Monaco train ,but as soon as someone pits all hell breaks lose. Teams start using all sorts of strategies, crashes everywhere and okay, maybe it isn't the easiest track to overtake on but it definitly isn't on Monaco's level. Remember Ricciardo passing people repeatedly on the last singapore race or Vettel coming through the field after pitting. It's also a big challenge for the drivers since the temperatures are very high and there's a lot of humidity.
@Josh Revell . . . I'm impressed with you knowledge of history when the Le Mans circuit was on your list. I had a motorsport publication dating back to that year of 1967, where I recall reading the article about that race, where the author wrote about it being a boring circuit. The topper of that article was a picture of Graham Hill and another driver in the paddock area, with Hill yawning, and the other driver looking bored. The Detroit circuit making the list was also interesting to see. I recall when the NBC-TV network (US) did the coverage one year; which was boring. Something about NBC-TV, even dating back then, where they struggle to make their TV coverage of a motorsport event interesting.
I guess Marina Bay would've been a better circuit if only the streets were wider. The overwhelming amount of turns makes it difficult for such wide cars to overtake on such narrow streets. I heard some drivers do like it as a challenge but it really doesn't help excite viewers
Couldn't be worse than it already is. Brilliant track for a time trials with one car on track at a time. A good measure of driver skill, but for racing it's useless. A glorified go-kart track with yachts, cash and filmstars. F1 outgrew Monaco in the 70's
Hot take: 2021 didn't save Sochi. The race was good because of the rain in qualy and the unexpected rain at the end of the race. This kind of condition at Monaco would be even crazier By the way, now we can add Qatar to the list
Idk but I think Jeddah would be better. In all seriousness, but why TF you make a high speed, narrow af street circuit without any safe run-off areas? It would be better if we had 2 Abu Dhabi races in the calendar
I honestly never understood why people don't like Shanghai. It's one of my favorite modern tracks (behind Sepang). The first/second corner are very unique, the middle sector is kinda generic, but fun, and the final sector has a great overtaking opportunity. The banked corner before the back straight is also very nice.
Yeah, I definitely see the good stuff from this track. Think a couple of corners really hurt it, such as the final corner. I reckon some people are in firm belief that Formula 1 shouldn't really exist outside of Europe, and will just hate a new circuit, no matter how decent it may be.

I actually thought that Sochi wasn't that bad, with two very long DRS straights and like you said, that spectacular turn 3. I also think that Shanghai isn't bad either, with the long, tightening curve of turn one and the super long backstraight heading into a hairpin.
I think the turns going into the front and back straights should have been higher speed turns maybe though so you had to keep up momentum onto those straights at higher speeds. Might take away some for en technical aspect, but if you also have more run-off on that back straight going into the street section, that would have made the back straight even better for passing.

All American F1 races except COTA, Indy, Watkins Glenn, Sebring, and Willow Springs are bad. No offense to Europeans reading this but you guys underestimate how hot America gets (and how dysfunctional many American race organizers are) in the Summer. Most Indycar races are held in the evening or night at Summer due to immense heat. Tracks easily reach 60 celcius on a hot July day in America. COTA and Indy are and were held late in the season because of that very reason. COTA isn't Bahrain and Abu Dhabi hot but it gets to 40 celcius until early September.

@@konkeydong4767 Ranking tracks is tricky. Especially for the best ones. Because, there'll always be people that disagree with it. But, I got a suspicion that the best F1 circuit of all time would probably be Spa-Francorchamps?

The biggest issue with Singapore imo is that almost every turn is a right-angle. I get that it’s in the middle of a city but even Monaco manages hairpins.

Monaco is an old, old city, predating the car, with old, old streets. Singapore is a modern city, with modern highways.
@@rileybanks1191 True, but if F1 is going to choose to race at Singapore, they should at least find a section of roads that make a half-decent track, even if that means leaving the city centre.

Great race track, just not for F1. Have seen enough exciting races in GT series. It's just that F1 doesn't suit well at Barcelona in racing.
With the old second to last turn, the track was pretty good. Now instead of two sweeping corners to the straight, the last sector is just a series of slow corners.
@@coast2coast00 Sure, but overtaking at Barcelona with F1 cars even in that layout was flatout near impossible. None of the layouts F1 has raced at Barcelona provided good overtaking opportunities and the racing is rarely exciting. (unless there is rain or teams/drivers screw it up for themselves.)

The best thing F1 ever did was have the Indy 500 as a points race.
As much as I love Laguna Seca, the drop from the Corkscrew is probably too much for F1.
Yeah, I really don't know why I didn't add Paul Ricard onto this list. Great test facility, but the Grands Prix held there have been batshit boring.

Couldn't be worse than it already is.
Brilliant track for a time trials with one car on track at a time.
A good measure of driver skill, but for racing it's useless.
A glorified go-kart track with yachts, cash and filmstars.
F1 outgrew Monaco in the 70's
@@neil754 ehhh more like early 2000s when the cars were smaller but yea no longer good racing
Hot take: 2021 didn't save Sochi. The race was good because of the rain in qualy and the unexpected rain at the end of the race. This kind of condition at Monaco would be even crazier
By the way, now we can add Qatar to the list
Idk but I think Jeddah would be better. In all seriousness, but why TF you make a high speed, narrow af street circuit without any safe run-off areas? It would be better if we had 2 Abu Dhabi races in the calendar
Well, no worries. Putin was kind enoough to guarantee there won't be any Sochi GP's for a while.
Well Monaco 2022 this year had a similar conditions it was definitely worse than Sochi 2021
Tilke also designed the Porsche Test Track at Leipzig. Also one of Tilke's fine examples.
"There is no defence to Sochi"
2021 rolls in "LOLz 🤣"
the interesting 2021 Sochi race was thanks to the weather....not the track itself. Without the rain it would have been boring as usual.
This vid has sealed it. You are genuinely the best F1/Grand prix CZcamser (😉) on the planet. Kudos to you sir (insert Rimmer salute). Genuinely appreciate your perspective, insight and humour. And adore the the little subtitles for drivers in the background footage 🤣. PLEASE keep making videos. Yours, an almost 40 year old motorsport addict 🖖
Yas Marina: You cannot overtake here.
Sochi: I'm a boooring track.
Hungaroring: Just hold my beer you two!
Hungaroring is actually a great track. Challenging, fast, technical and drivers like it. It always brings good races soo
I wouldn't say it's a boring track, but overtaking is an issue there, no doubt.
@@thejoshrevell The problem is that all of us watching this as a spectacle, the pinnacle of motor sport, aren't driving the cars. I thought this was your opinion, not that based on the drivers? I have heard what you say said, and I'm sure it is really challenging with lots of challenging corners, the problem is that whilst that may be true from their point of view there is nowhere to overtake, nowhere. The person who gets on pole nearly always wins there, there's no point having the race when it's like that. Do you race F1 cars? Have you not watched the Hungarian GP? I don't mind the race being there, it's an amazing city, and I can see why they want it on the calendar, but it is a very dull race to watch. Are you watching the same races the rest of us are or are you watching it thinking I bet this is great for the driver, whilst watching cars go round and round, lap after lap, just following each other?
Josh Revell you ever watched a Hungary gp?
@@mattpotter8725 You can overtake into turn 1 at the Hungaroring just fine. While I would like to see a second passing spot, having one good one in a 70 lap race will do.
1:00 its such a technical and challenging track like Monaco which is what everyone loves about Monaco, but what people don't like about Monaco is no passing which singapore kinda solves so I think its good.
I know nothing about F1 and have never seen a race, but I happened to see a poster with track outlines and wondered which ones are considered the worst. Coming from a place of total ignorance, very entertaining and informative video! :)
Got to say that, respectfully, got to disagree with Shanghai being a boring circuit because I kinda liked it, very fast and flowing in sectors
As far as the top ten is concerned, can we not have Sochi and Yas Marina as 1A and 1B because they are both god damn awful! Thankfully, looks like next year's Russian GP will be the last at Sochi before moving to a new venue temporarily near St Petersburg(?) I think
Shanghai certainly has some character with it, but I think they may need to re-profile the last corner. Not sure what it really adds to the racing. But, that could just be me. That Russian circuit is Igora Drive, I think. And that track actually looks pretty dope.
RockstarPoole69 Paul Ricard is a joke as well
2006 China Grand Prix is always my favorite
Sochi is the complete opposite of awful
@@joshlad8762 Paul Ricard is a glorified test track. There should be a rule that says no test tracks allowed on the calendar; so no Catalunya, no Paul Ricard etc.
Im always crying when I see those 2010 cars. Really want them back
7:14 wish granted
It didn't. Nothing was improved.
@@404TVfrdepends on how ya look at it
@@olegpetrovic don't care anymore.
The Dallas race actually provided some pretty damn good racing on the Sunday, leader changes, havoc, spins, wheel to wheel racing up at the front....
You forget Indianapolis. Nice Video by the Way.
3:11 Formula 1 should have the US Grand Prix at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan
Watching this after the Saudi Arabia Gp track was presented, I think this video should have a remaked
