- Join me, and all my chaos, as I continue setting up my Bayou and Haunted Hills section of my 2023 Halloween Village.
I share tips for hiding cords, and show you ways you can make a single Department 56 or Lemax piece look extra spooktacular by creating a display using styrofoam, toilet paper roll, and hot glue.
In addition to great tips, this video offers so many questions:
1. Will the styrofoam align?
2. How much popcorn can I eat at 2 am?
3. Will I ever “get it”?
Let’s go!

How do you map out your design prior to the cutting?
That is a great question, and a hard one for me to answer, because I really hate the planning and measuring stage of a project!! 😂 I i like to just dive right without much of an idea of what I’m doing. But as my projects get bigger I have to force myself to plan. I will typically start with four or five pieces and build a display for those pieces, knowing that I will build either back, forward or to the side of that Styrofoam display. I have measurements of all buildings including length, width and height so I know how big I need each piece of Styrofoam to be for each level. (I trace the bottom of each piece on copy paper, label them with the name of the piece and write the height on each piece of paper, that way as I’m designing the platform I can move the paper to check that the building will ultimately fit in the area u want it. That way I don’t break my pieces moving them around constantly…and I can also have them packed and out of the way as I plan in the spring or summer.) I also include room for any accessories and trees or stairs, fences, etc. that I would include include. It’s a lot of cutting styrofoam and rearranging. Once I have one platform built for those four or five pieces I’ll move onto the next one that will bump right up against it and build a display for another 4 or five. I work in small sections or else I get really overwhelmed. For the bayou and and haunted hills, I did a lot of planning in my garage since I didn’t want to take up my dining room in the off season. I’m actually planning a video to try to explain this that I hope to have up in the next week or two.
@KelleyDoesStuff thanks for this! When you build your levels you are basically just stacking the foam in up until the desires height you want right? Then from there you go down one? I didn't realize what I was getting into lmao with this hobby. Now I am overwhelmed!
Hi I’m so sorry I’m just now seeing this question! Yes I keep stacking foam to the height I want and then for the next level I think about the height of the buildings that will go on that level and how much clearance I want - how much of the building on the back/higher level do I want to be seen. If I used 6 pieces of foam to create my highest level. I’d probably use three pieces for the next level.
