Who originally wrote and sang Unchained Melody?
“Unchained Melody” is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.
The Righteous Brothers' 1965 version of "Unchained Melody" is considered the best-known version of the song. Bobby Hatfield sings lead vocals on the track, which was recorded for Philles Records. Hatfield later recorded other versions of the song that are credited to him.
