  • Duke University was created by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes were a Durham, North Carolina family who built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas. The Duke family had long supported Trinity College, which traced its roots to 1838 when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. In 1924, James Duke's family philanthropic foundation, the Duke Endowment, provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.

Duke University! Submitting my application today! Wish me everything you can. Luck isn't the only determining factor!

    Hi Sophia,
Duke does not have a minimum SAT score. Bear in mind that most applicants are going to clear the academic qualifications hurdle, i.e. very few applicants with very low GPAs and SAT or ACT scores are going to bother wasting their time applying to top-tier schools such as Duke. Hence, the story themes and 'wow' factors as shown holistically through the essays, letters of reference, activity statement, etc are going to help the admissions committee make their decisions.
    Best of luck!

Hi and thanks for your inquiry.
A 29 in and of itself shouldn't disqualify you from being competitive. Duke, like other top schools, wants to see applicants excel at the most rigorous classes available to them.
    Best of luck!

Hi and thanks for your inquiry.
Yes. Duke does admit international applicants. You can contact them directly if you have school-specific questions and you can contact us if you would like professional assistance with your applications.
    Best of luck!

Hi and thanks for the inquiry.
A score of less than 1800 is going to make Duke even more difficult. Of course, we would need a lot more information to competently opine on your chances and recommend best-fit schools.

Hi and thanks for the question.
If the rest of your candidacy looks good, I certainly wouldn't be discouraged by two high B's.

Do I have a chance with a 29 ACT? I plan on taking it again. Also, does Duke prefer AP classes over Duel Enrolled?

I've got a 2200 in my SATS and I play on my school basketball, football, rugby and track teams. I've got over 150 hours of community service and I'm getting a 36 in IB (without bonus points). What should I do to improve my chances of getting into duke. I am an Australian student who is studying in India.

    Hello!
I'm an undergraduate Civil Engineering senior. I will be graduating this coming Spring 2014. I recently took my GRE and got a 145 for verbal and 152 for quantitative. I'm currently at a 3.3 GPA. What are my chances of getting in? I'm currently in the process of applying. I'm also on the Steel Design Team for my Civil Engineering Club. I'm also a research assistant for a Civil Engineering professor. I would really appreciate some feedback! Thank you!
