  • This question comes from Amanda who wrote into to ask what the best way to cut thin or stretchy leather is. Using an xacto, rotary cutter and scissors I'll share my tips for cutting this type of leather.

Thank you I had a similar problem! I think I need a rotary cutter! Thought the scissor cutting but thought it might be too thick for braiding until I saw the stretchy bit.

Thank you for soft leather advice. I have same leather as you, but in Banana Yellow color. It is really hard to maintenance, but it's beautiful. For bigger projects I am using a Valiani Cutting Plotter, my company can provide perfect cutting services.

I have added a piece of sand paper to the back of my straight edge and it holds thin stretchy leather in place very nicely.. Holds the leather right next to the ruler or what ever you are using for a straight edge.

Trying to get info regardidng skiving leather and by viewing your video, I have the tools but what if the leather fabric needs to be thinned. Do not want the expense of a skiving machine as I am just thinning leather to do pouches or maybe they do not needed to be skived. How do I tell? Thanks for the video.

Hi Claret! I don't blame you for not wanting the expense of a skiving machine. Those things are expensive! The only time that I skive is when i'm using leather that is too thick to be stitched to another piece of leather. Any time i'm stitching together 2 pieces of 5oz or heavier i'll skive. But if its less then that, I generally don't skive. Some people will skive thinner leathers, but this is my own general guideline. I hope that helps!

I'm sorry but your video is misleading!!! Those are NOT thin leather! They don't even bend when you hold them! None of those cutters work for thin leather.
