Oh wow! That old steering wheel brought back childhood memories of our 1963 Holden EJ Special Sedan in the light green colour. That was the steering wheel in it. I have memories of a burning backside sitting in the back seat in summer when the car was hot as an oven! We soon learnt to take a towel to sit on! The driver took a wet towel to cool down the steering wheel. No seatbelt buckles to burn your hand on too, back then... That came later... We had 4 kids under 10 jammed in the back seat, and mum held the baby on her lap in the front passenger side while dad drove. Thank goodness we upgraded to a station wagon - we spread out and could roll around in the back of the wagon then! And yet, we lived! Ahh the good old days! lol

My Grandfather used to drive an EH Light Blue Panel Van. 3 on the Column shift. he took me Bush on a few occasions looking for Aussie Seeds. he went where there were no roads and long grass and i always wondered how he never hit many hidden stumps. He had off-Road tyres and travelled pretty much anywhere a 4WD could go. I remember sliding diagonally down slopes staring at dry creek beds that I thought we would be falling into. But the low gearing and steady driving saved the day.

The buttons on the steering wheel are for Indicating to turn left or right in your car which became compulsory here in Australia in the early 70s however indicator buttons were beginning to be added to cars around 1968. Some of the earlier Holdens added an extended arm attached to the drivers side of the vehicle which was manually lifted to indicate turning right, if you didn't have this device, you just extended your arm out the window to indicate you were turning right, these arm devices were then replaced with the buttons on the steering wheel in some cars. You had to manually turn them on or off! Eventually self cancelling indicators were in every car manufactured after compliance became compulsory in new cars. The left and right indicators were then added to a singular arm on the right side of the steering wheel, which are easier to access when driving.
