      @@epidote6020 Not really, when you add a voice of unison you add a detuned version of the same sound. When you stack layers you create different sounds which compliment each other in order to get a fuller sounding end product. E.g. adding unison to a saw wave to create a supersaw versus stacking layers such as a triangle, square and a saw square waves to create a super saw sounding product.

    • @epidote6020
      @epidote6020 Před 5 lety +31

      @@TheDemonwolf2198 a layer is a layer no matter if it's the same wavetable or not. Detuning a sound achieves a different purpose than adding like a bass sound, (stereo width), but so does adding a pluck sound to a lead. you can technically layer a bunch of different wave tables, detune each of them differently and pan them differently which would create the same effect, would that still not be considered layering with your view point? Adding voices of unison is layering, adding a lead to a bass is just adding another instrument to a band (still layering yes I know). Double tracking guitars and panning then 100% both sides is layering and it achieves the same effect as a detuned saw.

      Serum's LFO can be used as an arp when modulating OSC, Semi or Coarse. Serum definitely has arp capabilities, Cthulhu is just faster and more dynamic since it selects notes based on chord voicing where as Serum LFO modulates pitch based on intervals away from the current note being played akin to Sylenth's ARP or any other traditional ARP. Cthulhu is beast.

      He could use the Arp-plugin coming with Ableton. He explains the advantages in his Masterclass but i'm not sure if i remember them correctly.
      I think one advantage of cthulhu is beeing able to play additional notes. For example bass notes.
      With the Ableton Arp it takes every midi note you play and plays them one after the other quickly.
      As far as i remember Cthulhu takes a midi note and "arpeggiates" it, meaning it takes this as a root and takes for example a third and a fifth of this note (if you set it up this way) and repeats all of them.
      So out of One Midi-Note you get a whole arp which makes it possible to add bass notes without them getting added to one of the steps of the arp.
      I hope this makes kind of sense :D

    *This is a drunk rant*
    He does a fantastic job at making music but he has no room to criticise other artists when he does the same shit over and over again (slow ass intros with either piano or filtered saw chords, sometimes arpeggiated). Someone who can criticise, Flume, is an artist who admitted in an interview that he wanted to do the same old hip hop style music with nice chords and vocals, but he said in order to keep progressing he had to try something new.. Hence the new style in his Skin album which is offbeat and random, with amazing sound design... Someone, I may regrettably say due to backlash, deadmau5 could not live up to if he stayed the same (depending on your taste it could be a different story which I respect fully). Mind you, deadmau5 and Flume are absolute legends to each their own, and I hope one day that either I or anybody watching this video will meet them in business matters. Good luck with your music production guys/girls. Live that dream.
    (I assume we're all producers here because I doubt any normal person would give two shits about a Serum session)

      KURU KURU KURU lol? Are you fucking serious? You do know Joel was amongst the first who entered this Genre? Copying? You obviously haven't follow his work, it has been different in each album~ he is more focus on sound design and 'quality', flume on the other hand makes you think he is doing something new, while idiots like you are mislead (Has a different groove cause hiphop is like that) don't hate on Joel, he begun edm shit when It analogue synths was newly introduce, and internet shit wasn't even that well known. You can't compare him to 'spinnin' producers where they share EVERYTHING from instruments to structure while only changing 1-2 notes in each song. Fucking fool just stfu. Let me also remind you, it's not just about creating serum patches and putting them together, but also 'mixing' there's where the magic lies, what you see is a mere 5-10% of what goes on

    • @TG-ru4fd
      @TG-ru4fd Před 7 lety +16

      I was talking about him repeating his style, not changing it. Deadmau5 has changed, duh, but barely, especially in comparison to Flume, who in the matter of an album went from smooth R&B synths to meticulously delayed drums, incredible ambience, and his own original designed sounds (he did design pretty much all of his synths in the firsts album as well)... I don't really want to debate with you when I drunkenly and kindly put forth that I respect deadmau5 fully, I was just putting forward my opinion which you don't have the patience or common courtesy to respect. You kind of went off track with the producers and Spinnin' records. I didn't mention that at all, nor did I imply Flume or deadmau5 were below or on that level. Thanks for reminding me about mixing, I would've never known until you told me, you omniscient master of music you. I've studied DAW production for two years now.
      P.S.
      Listen to Sleepless by Flume (one of his first songs he was known for) , then listen to Helix (released on his most recent album) then tell me how much he's misleading supposed idiots like myself.. Barely any producers can reproduce his work. He's not just a Hip Hop producer, he's a hybrid of many genres, and you can never deny that.

      But as a producer or artist you have to establish your own "sound," which Joel as opposed to others has definitely done... yet again i understand it was a drunk rant haha
