A lot of people asked me questions about how to make Gate-fold obituaries and about what sort of paper to use to print an obituary. The answer varies for what kind of paper, but I cover the type of paper that I use most often in this video of me designing and printing a Gate Fold Obituary.
A gate fold is exactly what it sounds like, its when a sheet of paper folds in a way as to where its like a double-door that swings open. The result is elegant. You end up with a cover that splits in half, and a 3 panel design on the inside that you can arrange photos and pictures in a very attractive way.
As always, I use Adobe Photoshop to do my designs, and I highly recommend you using it as well. But these kind of designs can be made in other programs, as long as you can make designs in a print size (300dpi/resolution) and you can measure the document to make guides. Just apply this knowledge to your program of choice.
Something I didn't mention in the video that could save you time: When you've made both the front and back, you'll want to save the files together into 1 .pdf, so that when you go to print it will print out as a two sided print. I've covered how to do that here: • The Easiest Way to Mak...
What type of paper I used: • Designing a Gate Fold ... (11x17 gloss text is what I used)

Now this is an obituary, not tacky or elementary like most of them; very sleek
Awesome
Your work is elite. I’m bored and I need a hobby so I might just do stuff like this to pass time and become skilled in an a specific area. Maybe even start a small business making programs and invitations.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
This tutorial is the best yet; your volume is low, even with my volume being turned up high

@@MylesHiArt Ok thanks Myles you just keep making those CZcams vids....Be Blessed!
Hey mines keep printing off straight but I want mines to be folded do you know what I could be doing wrong
Hi, I made a funeral program for my grandfather a couple weeks ago. My second program, my first being his brother’s the week before. I have an AS in graphic design, so my fam went with me, the cheaper route for design. Anyways, my grandfather’s program was more of a booklet but similarly used inline graphics/images like yours but, via a combo of Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop. I want to make more programs/memorial books, but not as templates. Is this a full time business for you, or more of a side hustle? With all the MS Word & Canva templates out there is it possible to have a business in making custom funeral programs/memorial books? Do you work with a pro printer? Any starting out tips? I found you doing a Google search on funeral program sizes.
I dont make obituaries full time because I like to do a mix of different types of projects. But you could, if you connect with a pro printer. Lots and lots of people need them every day. People email me from all over the US about designing them. People generally can't make what I make in Canva or MS Word, so I don't really worry about those softwares.
Hi Myles! I really love your work! And the way you teach. I love making greeting cards and such! I want to start designing Funeral Programs. I designed my sisters and my family loved it! I've noticed you never recommend a printer which is also an important tool. What is a pro printer or an excellent printer you recommend please! Thank You for all you do!
Please could you upload a template. !! I’m trying to mimic this, but I’m only working on canva
Hey did you ever print it off canva I can’t get mines to print like a book it’s printing so big
@@shawndadick1170 yes!
@@shawndadick1170 maybe sure your px is scales right and you have the right size paper
Hey…tried purchasing your gate obit template, but the link does not produce anything??
Hello i am trying to get the text around the pic. is it anything you did to do that before you hit the text tool. I am having a hard time getting it to align that way. TIA
Sorry for the late response, but you have to make a path for the text to follow. I selected Sydney and made a path first
Do you do custom orders? How do I order please?
I do, send an email to myles at myleshi.art
How can I get boarderless prints from kinks or staples?
As far as I know, printers do not print borderless. They will print them out for you and then you can pay them to trim the border off or you can cut it off yourself.
Very nice, my only gripe is you need to speak louder or turn your volume up!!!
How did you remember where the fold lines are?
fold both ends to the center of the page, the front will come together and complete the artwork.
My text isn't aligning to the shape properly.
