DJI Mini 2 - Still A Good Choice in 2023?

- I get asked quite a bit if the DJI Mini 2 is still a good drone to buy in 2023. With all the new drones available such as the DJI Mini 3 it can make it a difficult choice. But in my opinion, the DJI Mini 2 is still an excellent choice due to its low cost and capabilities. DJI set the bar pretty high with the Mini 2 making it still a very relevant drone even 2 years later. Some drones being released today still have a hard time matching the DJI Mini 2's capabilities, reliability, and flight characteristics. Definitely, the DJI Mini 2 is still a worthwhile drone to buy if you can get a good deal.

I've been a professional photographer in Toronto for over 15yrs. Always wanted to get a drone to add arial shots to my services but never wanted the headaches of flying the old school phantoms. Got the mini 2 when going away for a 2 week shoot and armed with your video on how to set up and fly a mini 2 for beginners, I successfully used this little work horse every day while shooting and never had an issue. Super easy to fly and get in the air quickly, very good camera for what it is and amazing wind stability for the size.

That's the reason I want one my wife doesn't think it will get used but no one is doing drone photography and I feel like it will definitely set us apart
well, all these drones soon maybe will be banned, due to the political situation in europe, etc.. and, its not easy to take these drones to Asia either, requires registration and documents, adress, etc in many contries.. due to spy laws, etc..
At £380 rather than £550 is it better to get the mini 2 over the 3?…

I have used mini 2 for over 2 years and now a mini 3 pro owner. So have both drones . Mini 2 has limitations in low light. My two reasons for buying mini 3 pro . 48 mega pixel images on mini 3 pro and also the low light photography on mini 3 is amazing . Interms of day time flying mini 2 is a beast .

We have had our DJI Mini2 for 2 years now and found your channel at about that time Shawn. What a great help your guides have been for us as middle aged beginner pilots in the UK! In fact getting to grips with using the drone inspired us to set up a channel last year and add in our aerial footage to our videos. We would always recommend the Mini2, it’s been great. @@busetxtoma still going strong. We don’t use it in our videos as much as we hope….if we’re doing a long walk or ridge walk or a walk in windy weather we just rely on our GoPro for footage. Keeping hold of our drone for the time being. Hope you get one yourself.

Same, the problem is that the new laws in september require remote ID. These dont have it so I would avoid. If you are doing anything business related this will be required.

I'm looking at some second hand options: 1. mini pro 3 with RC, 2 batteries and a case for $800. 2. Mavic air 2s fly more $850 3. Mini 2 Fly More Combo $450. 4. Mini 3 with rc n1$470 - which is the best value? Its going to be for a hobby and taking pictures/videos in nature.
Bought a mini 2 in 2021 after looking at some of your review videos and used the tips for beginners videos to help me fly it and document the build of our house and some weekend hiking sights. Super efficient drone packed full of features for the price tag its at. Thanks for your videos.

I just bought one of these refurbished for a super nice price, and as you mentioned, to beat RID in America. I have 2 other larger DJI drones that DO have RID and thats good enough for the FAA.

Took mine for a flight a few days ago and honestly it was good fun, got some nice photos and did everything I wanted, still don't feel a need to upgrade.
Maybe I'll splurge on a inscreen controller but other then that I'm fine with my fly more maybe when a mini 5 drops I'll upgrade
Yeah! This mighty little mini 2 is still relevant in 2023, especially for light travel backpacking. I've just been to Koh Lipe Island in Thailand recently, and the video captured is stunning after using it multiple times for different travel adventures 😉
The Mini 2 is still an awesome and very stable little machine! I'm always recommending it to people when they ask me what drone should they buy as beginners.

I crushed my dji mini 2 twice already... its pretty sturdy and reliable... it still works and the blades are still the same... havent changes anything even after 2 crushes
I was aiming for the Mini 3 pro, even pre-ordered it in the shop, but right in the meantime the MINI 2 went down to 500€ including the Fly More Combo, and changed my mind. It was a Godfather's-like proposal, so to say. Exactly 50% less than Mini 3 pro (no combo included). I am really happy with this little creature, it's my first drone so I can't compare it to anything, but it's amazingly stable and easy to set up and fly it. And also tough: many crashes and hits, and only had to change a couple props. Great videos, best price, easy and reliable. Very good video, BTW, I'm glad to agree completely with your assessment. Today's test: below zero temperature, windy and foggy. Wish us both good luck.

Not bad at all. I managed to take good videos of cliffs and landscapes, the wind was annoying and made it harder but the Mini 2 behaved nicely.
i love my mini 2, as i am practicing a lot of control n movements while flying. i just passed my part 107 & have used it for my 1st paying job for photos. basic uses but client’s loved the photos it provides. I plan to expand wht i can offer but this is a gr8 drone to start with!!
I ordered the Avata 2 Flymore kit, instead of just getting the controller and goggles. For pretty much $500 more, may as well have it all! To learn the goggles, and motion controller I’ll learn to fly using the Mini 4 Pro. What’s weird is going to be that the Mini 4 Pro having obstacle avoidance, and the Avata not will be strange! Wow, what a combo! Thanks for the posts!

Thanks Shawn. I bought the Mini 2 from Sam’s Club In December 2022 for $379 ( similar package as Costco and same price) this one came with 2 batteries and a charging hub. I thought it was a good deal but all the Mini 3 videos made me think about returning it and just getting a Mini 3 or Mini 3 Pro

One of the best drones for beginners in drone photography 😅
Last week I had my Mini 2 is sport mode and flew it full speed into the side of a gazebo. Other than a small piece missing from the body, it still works perfectly. Tough little bugger! (Although I'll admit, my 3D printed gimbal guard likely saved the gimbal. It was smashed to pieces.)

Love my Mini 2! Only issue I have had with it is that if you are going pretty fast and run straight into a tree, it doesn’t go so well hahah! I I also did have issues with getting a refurb with a faulty gimbal which would overheat and jello out of nowhere. Got a new one and love it!
Yeah may as well save money get the DJI mini 2 if just want to go up in the sky and record though your not going hit anything take off and landing making sure your higher than everything around you in flight. They very safe and easy to fly if your not being a idiot lol or dare devil.
one advantage of the mini 3 is the compatibility of the flight battery + which give you additional minutes of flight time..
Just snagged the fly more mini 2 bundle off marketplace for $250!!! Great suggestion and great video.
Dji Mini drone series is nice but the major problem they have is how light and fragile they are. Granted it's under 250 grams but it cost like 5 bucks to register a drone over that weight i.e the air 2 and up. You will lose your drone if you fly it in conditions that are too windy and it just doesn't have sufficient power to return home if you go out a little way. I shoot a lot of cinematic stuff and am out in the mountains and files where it is almost always windy and the extra weight is a God send 🙃
Great video, thank you. I'm still pleased as can be with my Mini 2 and have no urge to jump up to the Mini 3 or Mini 3 Pro. Yeah, the camera is a "bit" better, but not double the price better. I don't need the integrated screen or the collision sensors. I just treat my Mini 2 as a camera on a rather tall tripod. Never upgrade to a new camera when your current rig is delivering results you're happy with.
I still love the mini 2 and one of the best drones released by DJI. Nice vid

2 annoying things on mini 2: gimbal stability and dark recording in shadows. Except those 2 issues its great!
Flew my mini 2 yesterday a.m. It’s such a good looking drone. I have flown it 2200 ft distance at 220 ft altitude in a skyscraper urban environment in Los Angeles before it lost connection to RC N1. (Skies and visibility really good this winter in Los Angeles 😊). Also, works great with Litchi Waypoints. Looks great on my BenQ 4K monitor

@@kno1262 If radio signal disconnects, drone will raise up to your return to home height. Usually by then it will re establish the signal and also start to fly home. just make sure you set your Return to Home altitude even higher than the tallest structure in that area and you'll be good.

Remote ID: if flying recreationally correct you don't need remote ID for this weight. If you have your part 107 and use this drone for it you will have register it regardless of weight and after September 2023 you would need remote ID for this unless you are flying in a FRIA. Note, you most likely will lose the ability to fly at night recreationally because adding the required anti-collision light will push you over 249g, this requiring registering your drone and needing remote ID.

I have the Mini 2 and love it, the only things i would change if i could would be longer flight times and a bigger camera sensor for low light, The Mini 3 would fit my needs nicely but i cant afford one.
So with the new DJI Mini 2 SE that came out, what do you think? $339 for the SE.

What I did is I sent my dji mini 2 se back and got the mini 2 instead because it is a cracking drone but better of with the mini 2 you get a little more stuff with it in fly more

RIP to my mini 2 today Apr 17, 2023, flew it while on a boat like I normally do, no issues, no signal lost, perfect flying everytime. until i did a firmware update. afterwards it was constantly losing signal at 70-100m and getting disconnected. Once it lost signal the RTH was somewhere in the water and the boat was already far away from the RTH. I was trying to adjust the RTH somewhere closer to our destination but I had no control of anything no signal on the screen, no GPS, wasnt even pairing anymore. it was heartbreaking. anyone else had this issue. let me know. I have a phobia now. glad it wasnt a mini 3 or else i would've been even more devastated.
My question would be is, could you put your yagi antennas on your DJI mini 2 drones front legs and your reflectors on you controller...would you get better range and distance....🤷♂️

I bought a used Dji mini 2 combo pack for 280 dollars on Mercari. The only thing wrong with it was that I had to buy a battery cover for 8 dollars

I got one recently i didn't want the obstacle avoidance sensors or remote id that the mini 3 has. Good reasons to get the Mini2. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing my location is being broadacst flying expensive kit.

Always wanted a drone but couldn’t afford one in a responsible manner. Making more money these days and just planned another vacation to Colorado and had the bright idea to get a drone now that I can afford one. This drone will be perfect. If anyone thinks I should just get the mini 3 since I could afford that also then lmk. This is my first drone though so was leaning towards the mini 2 incase I end up not using it as much. (Im pretty sure I’m going to use it a lot)

Great video as always Shawn. Actually the Mini 3/Pro does have built in RID since they have the ability to go over 250g with the Plus battery. The Mini 2 however does not have RID.
I do a lot of time-lapse video and it seems like the mini3 pro produces much less stable video compared to the 2. The 3 does fly better in windy conditions.
does the mini 2 come with the dji rc controller (with the video screen) or ability to be used with it? don't want to use a phone.
I just bought a like new unit with 2 batteries the charging cradle and padded bag for it for $200!
Mini 2 SE has OcuSync 2.0 as well.

As a Canadian, looking to get the mini 2. Based in Toronto, went into a trip to Nova Scotia and wish I could've captured the experience better. Any insight on taking fringe footage across Canada?
The mini 2 , I'm surprised you need to pay a membership to fly any of these drones. Is this normal.
I would recommend not getting any drone that doesnt have remote ID. If you are using this for any commercial purposes (youtube or whatever) you need to have remote ID. This is going to ground a lot of drones including these. The mini 3 has remote id built in and it has an awsome built in screen. THE FAA has created headaches for anyone wanting to fly a drone.
How many updates are left for this drone ? {hopefully 3 more years}

Yes its still a great buy and will do pretty much what you want to do, it does not have a follow me mode but then again how many times will u use it and you will use the basic modes all the time.. meaning just to fly to point A too point G, take pics.. take vid.. move camera up down and use like the pano etc.. but needs to be under 250g so cant put too many electronics in it but as i said has the basics on what you need in a drone and its small.. dam thing is like as wide and long as my Iphone.. buy most of all for all legal points dont require any special lic.. its under the 250g so its good to go.. just have to make sure where you are flying it.. and if it legal to fly it there.
Follow with boomerang mode. Stop return to 'home' when it's on the return. Restart.
The average video shot is @ 8 seconds. A string of these and even the dog will be bored.
How to - follow when there's no follow - on line.
Illegal. Or disallowed. Airports. Or Parks.
In Parks it's illegal if a droner is being stupid and the righteous make a complaint.
Landmarks can be identified and "authorities" will prosecute for funds via court fines.
But, vids have to be in the public eye. OK for private use.
'Authorities' will not travel hundreds of miles to find the culprit.
They phone first. Because, average joe is as dumb as a box of rocks and spills the beans.
On the phone, you don't know nuffin. Wrong number. Wrong name. Amnesia rules. FO.
Hang up. Or keep very quiet, say nothing and listen to threats and excuses. It's all OK.

Hi, are you sure about the facts? DJI list the mini 2 and mini 2 se as BOTH having OC2, not just the mini 2... both with the same transmission distance... Would appreciate clarification as this seems incorrect...
Most UTube vids contain half truths and down right lies.
With that said, The DJI OC2, 3 and 4 are Just WIFI. To many are just ignorant of the range of Radio signals!

We are doing a trip around Lake Superior in a couple months and I was wondering if Canada has any special laws regarding the mini drones? I absolutely love my Mini 2! As my user name implies, I am Freeman. I follow the rules but I also believe that the Mini 2 is like the Air 2 without obstacle avoidance. The Mini 2 and the Air 2 both have a range of about 5 or 6 KM. I have become a fairly good pilot. So much so that I really don't need the obstacle avoidance of the Air 2. I own both drones and when the remote ID kicks in in September 23, I will comply with the Air 2 but will probably not use it much. I love the fact that I can put the Mini 2 up and get pretty much the same results and range as the Air 2. I am not a pro photographer but I would put a lot of my videos up to compete with the pro's. But that's not my focus. I'm a hobbyist. I love the stability of the Air 2 but I found that my Mini 2 can handle most wind environments. If the wind is above 20 mph, I don't even fly the Air 2. Like I said, I've become a fairly good pilot. Why risk it. So again, I choose freedom over tyranny. I call my Mini 2 the Minute Man 2 drone because it represents the future. It quite literally pushes back against the government and it's overreaching drone restrictions. It lets you experience FREEDOM ! . I love that the most. Cheers!
