Buses of the South Yorkshire PTE - The Early Eighties

- čas přidán 14. 09. 2015
- During its 12 years as an operator, the South Yorkshire PTE introduced several new models of buses onto the streets of the county, experimented with different types and liveries and famously had two periods where it needed to hire in vehicles from further afield.
The programme features the cine film of Stuart Cooke, filmed mainly in Sheffield between the years of 1980 and 1984 - and features an in-depth narration from Stuart himself and leading SYPTE preservationist Gareth Atherton.
The programme was produced in 2008. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
The 98 to Greengate Lane was my bus home after playing Snooker at Faulkners Snooker Club on Cambridge St. I would have been 13-14 in 85-86. Such fond memories seeing that 98 bus. Special. Thank you for the film. I shall cherish it.
What a fantastic film. Takes me back to the days of South Yorkshire Transport in Sheffield which often received the accolade as the best public transport system in the country. It was brilliant. You could get anywhere in South Yorkshire and get a train to Doncaster from Sheffield for 25p. I always remember complaints about the Booth and Fisher Service which ran from the City Centre out to Killamarsh via Jordanthorpe and Eckington and having to pay 40p because you were going out of the South Yorkshire boundary into North East Derbyshire. I have fond memories of the Angel inn at Eckington and catching the last bus back to Jordanthorpe about 22:30. I used to go to a CB club there every Wednesday. Those were the days guys.
Fabulous film, brings back loads of memories not only of the busses, but also of the cars and, of course, of Sheffield years ago.
So many bus variations, trying to keep up with all the specific details unique to each one takes some getting ones head round.
The good, the better, the not so good and the atrocious examples, all have their place in history.
I used to use south yorkshire buses as a kid, fares were relatively cheap then, which was just as well they were.
Preserving some em in full running order is pure nostalgia.
Public transport, something most of us remember so well.
Thanks for showing some great clips.🙂👍
An hour of old buses around old Sheffield?!?!? I could watch this all day! Where did this come from?!?!?!?!?
manor
This brings back so many memories of my time at East Bank between 1977 and 1986.
I Travelled all over the city on those busses. Mainly the 20, 33, 43 and 28 from up at Hemsworth into town. My dad was a fitter at Greenland Road and knew those busses back to front - all the systems. My interest in engineering came from him. I still have his toolbox in my garage, many of the spanners in there will have been used on those vehicles.
Brilliant piece of historical film for bus enthusiasts A+
Excellent, i worked for SYPTE from 1979 and First/Mainline til 2000. I remember when the inspectors came to East Bank in the 80's and there was all this extra work to do.....the overtime for the week, was over 1000 hours!
Fantastic Video, Not just the Buses but the History of Sheffield.
My father-in-law would have loved this video, he worked at the Leadmill garage as night foreman.
Great company to work for, didn't realise it at the time but made a lot of friends for life.
Those Dennis Dominators were a terrifying experience to be a passenger on, especially as they were getting older & older and still used into the Mainline era, the back seat on the back downstairs seemed to move with the chassis and when speed humps were added to Sheffield's roads and their suspension was getting worse, I held on for dear life sitting upstairs!!
But the Eager Beaver's I did think they were fine, until you hit a bump in the road and you lept up 2 foot from the seats! 🥴
Used to be great when some of the double deckers had speakers in upstairs and you'd hear Radio Hallam on, sometimes heard the great Johnny Moran Breakfast Show on the way to Town! 👍👍
Even though I love vintage trams I really enjoyed this video
Very nostalgic video for me. My dad worked for SYT up until 1992 when he died. He worked in the cash department ( I think he was a cash clerk ) in Rotherham not in the town centre it was more towards Thorpe Hesley. Would be nice to hear from anybody that knew him.
Amazing video, thankyou for sharing it!!
Nice Movie....Sheffield was always an interesting place.. Long Live The People's Republic!
I don't do it now..I gave all my negs to Dave Spencer....It's better than sitting about.. Here's a link of Yorkshire Buses...Heavy on the Sheffield. pmpfilms.smugmug.com/UK-Buses/NORTH-WEST/STUART-GARNER-COLLECTION-BUS-P/Yorkshire-Area-Bus-Photos-by/
This i think is a nova production their recorded dvd never play properly.
9:57 That's a better look for the busses!! 👍
Ray Andrews ( Archie 12273) 1976 TILL 2003 Leadmill road and then onto East Bank road. still miss driving these busses, and the all the Inspectors, and all my old friends. Love to watch these vids.
Thanks for this!!!
Good ol'days when a bus said on the timetable was scheduled to turn up, it damn well turned up!
Back in the day when you could set your watch to em' and when the services used to be there for the public/passenger and not what makes more money for the shareholders!!
Come on Mayor, do like Burnham & get em' back under public control!! 👍
Brought back memories for me from 40 years ago. I remember when the blue and cream changed to brown and cream, grandparents and parents weren't impressed!
Anyone remember the jingle on Hallam FM "The moor the merrier"? And if you're from Sheffield then you'll get the "moor" instead of "more" reference.
Similar vain, does anyone remember PA Jewellery ads on with Mr Hodgkiss' assistant with the boss being played by DJ Gerry Kersey on Radio Hallam?
"Only a minute b' car from t' University or catch a 95 bus!" 😁
16:29 and other times in the video but old Charles Hagenbach bakery, many a gorgeous, tasty Sausage Roll enjoyed from them! Mmmmm! 👍
Loved those cream and brown Atlanteans. Haven't lived in Sheffield for over thirty years but I still sometimes dream I'm on some interminable bus journey across the city, then the 24 out to Totley...
Fantastic.
I love the buses
The B&Q on Greenland Road has a nice painting in the back on the wall of the old Sheffield buses
Brian Hall ( Casper ) Fitter Leadmill road 1977 -1992
Worked for Northern Counties for 27yrs until it’s closure in 2005 by Alexander’s, it was a very, very sad day, the company would have been 100yrs old in 2019
Remember 2p bus fares?
I certainly do, but not for long in my childhood but 5p fares to places like Strines Inn on a Sunday morning (I don't mean it was only a Sunday fare offer! 😉🤣)
Fabulous film and brings back so many childhood memories! Just one clarification, if I may? Someone mentions the Clipper was a free service and then was raised to 2p; however I recall it being the other way around. If I remember correctly it was due to the bendi's somehow not being recognised as a chargeable service (I think to do with their articulated construction and some legal loophole at the time) and therefore the operator couldn't legally charge for the service. It was therefore decided that the 2p charge should be dropped for the route, even if some of the buses used were not articulated. I do remember the glass jar on the Nationals for dropping the 2p in, then these disappeared and you just hopped on and off. I wonder if any of the glass jars survived?
I recall Bruce Hugman being appointed as PR manager. When he was offered the job he is reported as saying "does it make a difference that i am gay"? Apparently not, he got the job and did excellent work
You didn't mention that when the PTE was formed Sheffield transport was millions in debt so Doncaster and Rotherham's fares had to rise in order to compensate.
Craig Beaumont 1974
I find that so funny
loved this but not the single on its way to barnsley on the wrecker
Did any other Sheffield buses scream like the Ailsas? I'm curious to know because as a young boy (1983-84) standing at the bus stop with my mum on Woodseats Road, I used to love the screaming sound as the bus slowed to a stop. I even used to imitate it all the time :D ... I was just wondering if it was definitely the Ailsas whose whining noise I remember so fondly..?
No, that would be the Ailsas!
I wish I had an time machine to the past
When was this?? Have no recollection of AEC Routemasters!
Even had some Rotherham Halfcabs during the shortage. Why could Sheffield not keep things straight? And why were the Ailsas rejected by Rotherham?
We could but the stupid foreman cleaned the fly wheel of with a bcf fire extinguiser and the tester knew we got 8 hrs to change a flywheel and got pissed off so fetched his mates down and they crocked all sorts of buses for the slightest thing. The rest is history.
This footage is superb full marks to the guy who must have spent a fortune recording these then every day senes bus fleets were so more interesting than today.
Rare good.
As a comliment to this, i do have over 20 000 bus pictures on facebook, if anyone is interested
I can almost taste the smell... Like a a piss filled ash-tray.
