  • The Persian Empire was one of the most mysterious civilizations in the ancient world. Persia became an empire under the Cyrus the Great, who created a policy of religious and cultural tolerance that became the hallmark of Persian rule. Engineering feats include an innovative system of water management; a cross-continent paved roadway stretching 1500 miles; a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea; and the creation of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum of Maussollos.

    Alexander was just as brilliant as a strategist , too. However, he perhaps lacked the persona of cyrus'.

    "The Athenian general Themistocles had proposed that the allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, and simultaneously block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium." I believe this is what they were referring to with specifically mentioning the naval Battle of Artemesium, which did take place simultaneously with the Battle of Thermopylae.

    We praise him for his ideals on rights for the weak. Alexander was a merciful King towards his defeated foes, gave wealth back to the people by founding several Alexandrias. It was his worldwide vision of uniting people under one banner and mixing of cultures. Thats why we praise him.

    And to further ampilfy: "Since the Greek's strategy required both Thermopylae and Artemisium to be held, and given their losses, the withdrawal to Salamis was decided. The Persians overran Boeotia and then captured the evacuated Athens. However, seeking a decisive victory over the Persian fleet, the Greek fleet attacked and defeated the invaders at the Battle of Salamis in late 480 BC."

    What made the Persian Empire unique among empires, were the principles laid down by its creater, Cyrus the Great. His "Declaration of Human Rights" and a collection of writings from the Jewish Torah and Greek Historians all point to a benovelent conqueror. Before Cyrus all vanquished subjects were either enslaved or slaughtered. Cyrus legacy will always be remembered for leaving an alternative to a Machavellian method of rule.

    Persian culture contributed many things that we take for granted today, and King Koresh was the high point. It is a shame that his reputation is not represented today in the rulers of Iran, who are not at all tolerant. Koresh is the only Gentile King called "annointed" in the Hebrew bible - "moshiach." He deserves this honor for allowing Jews to rebuild the temple.

    @fmoa oh and speaking of persia's capital being burned, the greeks did it because the persians burned Athens. So Alexander wanted to destroy the city as a symbolic gesture, not a destructive one.

    I am first going to admit that i may be and probably am biased since I am from 3/4 Persian ancestory ( 1/4 Russian ) , but I believe there is a huge bias in the US education system in the sense that the Greek Empire is glorified a lot more than its Persian counterpart while the former got most of its knowledge from the latter.Long live ALL.

    Alexander ordered his troops not to treat the Persians with disrespect and or loot their homes. So that wasn't true Alexander like Cyrus before believed in rights for the Persians so much so 2 of his wives are Persian.

    Yes, I agree. He probably would have lived a much longer life if he had been a better student of Aristotle. Obviously, many Muslims love the personality of Alexander, and I cannot tell you how many Jews I know who have named their children Alex, after this great history figure. People love success, I guess. And I do not mean to say that he did not do great things, or build cities that housed great libraries. He loved Persian culture, in spite of his retaliatory behavior in burning their city.

    C'mon man Alexander may have conquered persia but he treated the persian culture as equal as his own in fact he had a curiosity about the unknown to him and his fellow countrymen great persian civilization which means that he alway tryed to learn more and more about it and as far as I know neither he nor his successors never tryed to vanish or replace the ancient persian religion or culture something that later conquerors did.

    @Noremorse10 actually, Persia symbolized nazi germany not through ideology, but rather through strategy. Persia fell like germany and committed a terrible mistake like Germany, but their ideals are not based on racial supremacy. I think you misheard about what I mean. Persia was not racist, it just made the same mistake like Nazi Germany. It fell like Nazi Germany.

  • @72Yonatan
    @72Yonatan Před 12 lety

    Alexander was crude and cruel compared to Cyrus the Great. The Persian king had tolerance and a love for justice and beauty, and his greatness was innate. His love for people and his modest behavior is not something reflected in the love of gold or cruel treatment of women and children exhibited by Alexander. I would never name one of my children "Alex" but I would name one "Koresh."

  • @Hafez21hafez21
    @Hafez21hafez21 Před 13 lety

    @CoreyStudios2000 Alexander was not an idiot but he was more like an opportunistic rat who saw Persia at its weakest, weakened by 80 years of inner corruption and power struggle and conflict in the Persian dynasty. Daruis III was a weak king not like his fathers, and Alexander got lucky. even though it took him more than 4 years of battles to gain victory. But he died soon after. And the Persian empire got back to its feet to defeat this time the Roman Empire over and over.

    Who is kidding who?? It human nature to want power and it is human nature to abuse it. Everybody thinks; "I would make a better king because..." Sooner or later somebody will commit an attrocity either on a small scale (Charles Manson) or a large scale (Hitler, Stalin, Mao). Sadly, the human heart at it's core is self-centered.

    ''the Greeks had defeated the Persian fleet at Thermopylae''??? DAFUQ?! They confused/mixed up the 2 Battles: Thermopylae and Salamis...Thermopylae was a land-battle, not a naval collision and the Greeks were defeated there...Are these guys at BBC for real? How can they make such rediculous mistakes in their narration and expect to be taken seriously?...
