Air Philippines Flight 541 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Air Philippines from Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila to Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City. On April 19, 2000, the Boeing 737-2H4 crashed in Samal, Davao del Norte while on approach to the airport, killing all 124 passengers and 7 crew members.

I knew Captain Catipay as a child in 1970. He was then an Air Manila Fokker F-27 Pilot. He had over 30 years as an ATP.
We all did SCUD running , flying VFR in Instrument conditions. , RIP to the crew and passengers
I worked as station loader at air philippines during that time of tragedy..
I heard from my fraternity brod who is a front desk at Pearl Farm that Tatay Digong immediately at site and directed rescue efforts. Raced in to wall of flames with no consider for his safety and looked for survivors.
Also that Kuya Bong Go lifted the fuselage by himself because he thought maybe survivors under it.
Tatay and Kuya Bong are bravest Pinoys. Praise God and Allah.

Speaking of air Philippines i remember a little bit when I was 3 yrs old that time with my Lola I think flying from manila to Davao and I think we rode air Philippines way back 1998 and when I was 5 yrs old in yr 2000 I think we rode also air Philippines or Philippine airlines then Cebu Pacific when I was 19 and 23 back and forth but RIP to all crews and passengers.... So sad...

The next day after this accident, I flew back to Iloilo with Air Philippines... While waiting at the boarding gate, I was wondering why only few people were there in the predeparture area while Cebpac more than a hundred... Only that to find out, I was next at the person reading the headlines in the print ad regarding what happened the past day... I was really not aware bcuz I came from abroad...😔
I was in the 4th grade when this happened. We live close to FBIA and i was on my way to school and i wpuld always notice planes circling around to position themselves to land. I would even hear them make a landing from a distance but this was very different. It circled around but i did not hear it land, then news broke out about an airphil plane crash at samal island. Rip to the lives lost aboard the flight

i remember when i was a kid 6 years old at that time i lived under my aunt at victoria heights davao city and when i was there at outside of the house my everyday routine is watching airplanes landing every morning, and in april 19,2000 i saw this airplane its on its way to landing and i wonder he is circling on the sky and when it came back later on i saw this airplane just about 250 feet above the sky and its near in our subdivision his edge of the plane got fire there was a huge loud explosion sound that comes from the airplane very loud

I was book flight that on February 4,2020 at Manila to Butuan ,I missed my flight 5 minutes and the bording pass is closed we not let open because we are let with in 5 minutes ago...me and my daughter with he's son we are going to Butuan ..my deepest sympathy to all family of the passenger flight 541 Philippines airlines...

Do you know any similar accidents to this one? I know that so far, a somewhat similar accident to this one is Garuda Indonesia 152. Air Crash Investigation should try to make an episode of this accident in a future season BTW.

Lesson learn in both sides ATC and the pilot at pati na rin sa CAAP kung may kumpletong INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM lang sana kahit very poor ang weather kayang e landing ng piloto yun thru ILS. kahit wala ng visual approach.
Hindi naman naging problema ang weather sa pag landing nila, may visual approach ang Flight 541, nakita nga nila na ang inusundan nilang A320 hindi pa nakaalis sa run-way kaya sila nag declare ng missed approach.
ATC fault and ofcourse the incompetent or over confident pilot. May his soul rest in peace together with all the people aboard

I think something is amiss with the narrative. This video failed to mention that the pilot , capt. Estraton Catipay has over 30 years of flying experience, doing commercial flights for PAN AM, DELTA, TRANS WORLD AIRLINES, EASTERN AIRLINES, PAL. MALAYSIAN AIRLINES and was listed by the US FAA as " gold wingers". Newspaper account says that a trainee pilot was on board for familiarization and that a "touch and go" was requested at F. Bangoy int'l airport. So if a trainee is on board therefore a check pilot must be on board and capt. Catipay is not only a check pilot but the airlines chief check pilot.

It was better for the airplane to just fly above the mountains to pick up altitude then circle back than being blocked by smokes of clouds. Kaya pala ang mga old aircrafts ay dini-decommisioned due to having old technologies.
