My Note 5 was stuck on the At&t screen after I rebooted it will not power off. I had to let the battery drained. Then I tried your hard reset steps and it worked. I lost some pictures but apps were backed up and restored. Thank ALOT! YOU SAVED ME ALSO.

Does it matter which method I use? Is one more effective than the other? If not then why would anyone need to know how to "Hard" reset their Note5?
Volume Up button+Home button+Power button does not reset, probably it worked with older Android versions. Just go to settings and find the line that has Reset in it, then follow instructions

LoL you can't easily reset your samsung if u dont remember Google account because after that you need verification to go through the device
