  • The violist Tabea Zimmermann, accompanied by Javier Perianes at the piano, featured in the last concert of the 2014-2015 season. The two performers presented a program consisting of works that, for the most part, were not originally conceived for the viola. The core of the program, made up of works from German Romanticism (Schubert, Schumann, Brahms) was balanced with a performance of Falla’s Siete canciones populares españolas (“Seven Spanish Folksongs”) and a selection from Signs, Games and Messages for solo viola by György Kurtág, one of whose movements is dedicated to Tabea herself.

    Es extraño que, siendo un video producido por una fundación tan prestigiosa como la Juan March, no hayan reparado en el detalle de que la magnífica versión de las Siete Canciones Españolas de Manuel de Falla fue ofrecida en un orden diferente del original y, no obstante, los títulos en el video siguen el orden "de partitura". ¿Me van a decir que no conocen la obra?

    • @consueloalvarez191
      @consueloalvarez191 Před 3 lety +1

      Aclaro: no cuestiono que Tabea y Javier hayan preferido cambiar el orden (dejando aparte que es evidente que los dos últimos números fueron transportados, sin duda para favorecer la tesitura de la viola; los restantes números siguieron en sus tonalidades la versión para voz aguda y piano). Lo que no me explico es que quien edita el video, o su supervisor, no se hayan dado cuenta del orden diferente y no hayan corregido el mismo.

    I only listened to the Arpeggione. Her playing is deadly accurate and very elegant... but almost too elegant. I appreciate that she's going for textural variety, etc., but there are few moments where I hear the rich, full-bodied, earthy viola sound I'm craving. Her interpretation might be more refined than, say, Pinchas Zukerman's, but I prefer the depth and richness of his. And I say this as someone who generally admires Zimmermann's playing.

      Listen to the rest of the recital, you will appreciate her playing in the other pieces. I agree, I prefer Zukerman's richness and feeling in Arpeggione Sonata and his performance on CZcams is my favorite interpretation of the piece I have ever found. I think Zimmerman in hers is aiming to do something original. If you didn't love it, keep listening because you will like what she plays in the rest of the recital.

      perhaps this theatrical moving about which is rather annoying ? especially so since she certainly does NOT need any such "show" but would do much better by playing the viola as in earlier days of her marvellous career ;-)

    • @iCyclone
      @iCyclone Před 5 lety +2

      @@musicfan4160 I'm with you-- I find all the movement really distracting-- and I wonder if it hurts her tone production, because her sound lacks the depth and power of, say, Pinchas Zukerman's. I mean, she's a great player, obviously, and I own several of her recordings, but I'm just not blown away by her Arpeggione rendition here. It's elegant, crisp, and accurate, but for me it's lacking the viola's rustic throatiness.

    • @musicfan4160
      @musicfan4160 Před 5 lety +2

      @@iCyclone when comparing the playing to Pinchas Zukerman's, one notices immediately the difference in sound production ... i.e. contact of bow with strings, which allows him to not only have a larger, full, rustic sound, but also a soft palette that still carries, rather than just becoming soft and hardly noticable 6 rows away from the podium. Her sound is there, but in comparison is not as present, almost a bit shallow in places. I seem to remember better days of her playing.
      One would also notice that in comparison even in how they hold their instrument, Zimmermann's viola almost seems "too big" for her and not really "a part of her", whereas Zukerman's viola "fits" and seems "part of him"
