    GoPro is still the best action camera for underwater video, because of it's superior image quality and it's adaptability for in water and dry land use. When I want a compact action camera, one of the most important aspects is that I can get stable, cinematic underwater footage and be able to store the camera securely when not in use.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hey James, great tips and video as always! I normaly use a selfiestick for my gopro manly because of 3 reasons, I am further away from the animal therefor it won't be disturbed, I can point to things with it so I do not need to take an extra device as an aluminium stick (you can also hit the selfie stick against your tank) and I'll grap the stick during the dive so I have a place for my hands when I don't film. The one handed version you have shown is perticullaly good because of the light, I am always missing light so that might be a reason to think about it. I also dive with a redfilter!

    Great review of devices. I favor the selfie stick. It allows for the most flexibility of types of shots, including wide angle selfies . I also like the extension feature to get close-ups of fish and coral. To avoid wobble at full extension, simply choke up on the stick. Between shots, I simply collapse the stick, and let it hang from my wrist via the lanyard (I may just rig up a clip). Then I always have two hands free.

    I dive a rebreather and find the mask mount really good. With a rebreather both the bubble and head movement issues are far less and I find the set it and forget it factor really important. The major disadvantage I find with head or mask mounted is that if you want to get close into an object you kind of have to stick your face right in there. Quite scary when trying to get close up of a Moray Eel.

    I would recommend a 3-way for the GoPro instead of a selfie stick. It will fold out if needed, always works as a hand grip and comes with a small tripod in the bottom if you want to set it up for dive by's. I have also used the head strap on a single tank for mounting the GoPro. It can be very boring footage if pointing backwards, however it has picked up some amazing fish life and shots in wreaks that I missed. Pointing forward it is pretty cool although you often get shots of your bubbles!!!!

    I’ve tried the back pack mount, but with a dry suit and a lot of other gear it was difficult to find. I’ve had great success just tying a bolt snap to the waterproof housing and clipping it to a shoulder d ring. The camera hangs in the water upside down so you have to flip your footage in post processing. But it’s down and away from my body, always self levels, can be easily removed if I want to hand hold shoot. And cost me $5 and some line to secure it. Just don’t forget to melt your line to keep the knots secure.

    Hi James! Thank you so much for the recommendation of the shoulder strap! I currently use the GoPro's version of "floaty handle" and while I like it for the reasons you mention, it is a hassle for me when climbing back up on the ship ladder when it's dangling from my arm and getting in the way especially on rough seas. I am buying the shoulder strap holder now and I hope it works out better!

      @rubiksfaq9214 Před 10 měsíci

      @@matthew-pierrerogers2292 It's been plus/minus for me; what I have gone with now is a GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip; it is very versatile on where it can clip it on your BCD (you can clip it on any strap even waist strap if you need to) and it holds on tight, also easier to reclip to BCD with thick 3 to 5 mm gloves. Definitely recommend that you get the name brand clip, GoPro works the best. (just make sure to attach a strap or something to it so even if the clip slips off, it will still be attached to your BCD somehow so you don't lose your camera)

    One mounting method I have used many times and love is the gear retractor. I'm not a huge fan of it dangling but I have long arms and in reality, action cameras like the go pro require you to get up close so this worked perfectly for me if that is all I have and I didn't have to worry about reclipping it. Pull it up, shoot, and let it retract. When I use my other camera setups the standard two-hand mount is always preferred.

    What extender arm do you have on the tray?

  • @wrayks188
    @wrayks188 Před 3 lety +1

    Hands down a light selfie stick which does not produce arm fatique. Image stabilization on newer GoPro's gives perfectly steady shots when extended, and if you have added a light like a Suptig 84 LED light to the mount, then addition of a wrist float attached behind the camera can make it nearly weightless at full extension. The best part is the coverage you get following an animal that won't stay still without having to swim after it and accidentally bump into something. Just move your arm. GoPro's are wide angle devices and need to be fairly close. Don't forget to attach it to the wrist so when it is retracted, you can just drop it. And even more advantages, who takes a video of a 1 hour dive and wades through it looking for 10 seconds of usable content? Turn it on, extend it, film it and off and use GoPro trimming to delete those actions. And use the photo grab to get the perfect frame for a picture. Selfies too. No other mount has all these advantages.

  • @timgosling6189
    @timgosling6189 Před 3 lety +2

    I have used the floaty handle thing, and the easiest way to stop it floating away is to put that strap round your wrist! I also attach a single ender so I can clip it off when not in use. If the dive's not going to be in good sunshine I use the wide-angle video setting on my canister light on a Goodman on my left hand so I can get good separation between light and camera to minimise back-scatter. My alternate is a Goodman handle with integrated GoPro mount and adjustable arms either side for a pair of 1800 lumen video lights. Again I have a bolt-snap tied on with bungie so I can clip it off. I agree with you on the head mount option, I find the resulting footage irritating and almost unwatchable.

      😂 I feel that possibly you have overlooked the best go pro mount: The Buddy Mount. *(Please be careful if googling as you will not find it on Amazon and you might be redirected to an adult film which is completely unrelated).
      When picking your dive partner you only need to be concerned with what series go pro he has and what editing software he uses. His actual diving experience and gear servicing regiment is of no importance. If he can film and edit he is your buddy (possibly for life ;-)
      The Buddy Mount - pros
      🐠 you have no gear to purchase, maintain, or carry
      🐠 while you are at the pub enjoying a pint he is editing
      🐠 you wind up in way more of the film if you are not the one filming *(this can be embarrassing if you have poor trim and wave your arms around a lot)
