I like to use the golf club analogy - each club has a different purpose. So do each of my amps. And each of my guitars, for that matter. They all sound different. Or use the painter analogy - they are all different colors - would you ask an artist to paint with only 3 colors?

Ideally time based effects like Reverb, Delay, Chorus etc. Sound much better through the loop. Distortion, Overdrives and Wah Wah's sound better into the front. IE: Reverb sound much better added to an overdriven tone, than overdriving a reverberated tone.

I've had a Laney IRT Studio 15 with a Laney 1x12 HH cab for a couple of years now.
It's my 'British' sounding amp to contrast with my Fender BB15, although the BB15 to be fair does have a little 'Britsh'ness in it too, I guess.

Great amps. I have 2 x LC15s from the 90s, run in stereo. Still going strong. Back then the speakers were not great so one has a Celestion, the other a Ramrod. The speakers on the Cubs sound better but of course it’s hard to tell through the Tube. Sticking a Guv’nor in front of them works very well.

  • @rowlandstraylight
    @rowlandstraylight Před 3 lety +3

I've got the old cub head. Took it into the recording studio a few months ago with Zu Zu Petals and was getting told to turn it down. In 1w mode. Which was a shame because it sounds epic when it has the power stage cranked and protesting. 15w is loud enough to upset a drummer but the power stage is not clean if you crank it loud.
The not quite cleans are good to. I have mine all over the Rowena Straylight single. I think I used it for the bass as well with some creative EQ and blending in a very clean red-knob fender head for the low end.
Didn't do so well for modern distortion, and it's a bit hit and miss with pedals. Good with a soul food, a crayon or ed the compressor. Tends to compress a bit much for my big delays even using the FX loop, and a bigger cleaner amp is better with more distortion oriented pedals like a DS1, dod grunge or a bigmuff.
Tempted by the newer cub. But I kinda want a slightly bigger one. I think if I could find one doing 30 or 40w it could be perfect, perhaps switchable between full power, half power and 1w, but I've always got an attenuator if I need it.

    • @rowlandstraylight
      @rowlandstraylight Před 3 lety

@Dave N it's a bit of a price jump but yeah. Also looking at ironhearts. The high gain channel on both goes a lot further than than but there's nothing to stop me using it like a single channel if it's right. Either would replace my blackstar HT40 combo which is ok but combos suck when there's a cab already mic'd on stage, and I'm finding the EQ on the blackstar a bit limited, especially on the clean channel.

    Here are my two cents:
I have tried A LOT speakers in this amp, modern and originals.
For clean jazz tone the legend L 1218 is the best I have tried so far in it.
A 16 ohmed G12T75 modern takes out the low mids so makes it sound very sparkly and fendery- good if you want to.
A vintage V30 that had a dense steely tone- good for slide guitar.
Greenbacks sound very woody, but are not my top choice.
G1265- similar to the stock HH 1265 in many ways, very nice.
The best was an EVM12L, original, in a thiele cab.
And the best overall was an Eminence 16 ohm Lady Luck- unbelievable speaker.
So good it make me email Eminence to ask for similar contemporary speakers of them (lady lauck is an OEM Emily speaker) and they informed me that their currently produced equivalents are the CV 75/ 65, Reignmaker, Governor and Legend L1275recommended- and they are correct, you may go with any of these!!!
From Celestions for this amp I recommend:
    Alnico blue, gold, cream, ruby.
    G12H anniversary- not the Heritage.
    Any Creamback, especially the H75.
V type first, A type second.
    G1265/ T75.
    70-80/ G12P80.
From Eminence those I mentioned first plus the GA SC64 plus many others.
    From Jensen C12N, K2, P12.
This amp packs a lot of punchiness, boominess and low mids due to circuit design and small enclosure so you may need to compensate for that with the speaker choices.
It is a GREAT amp, totally recommended.

I have the old Laney Cub 15w head loaded with NOS RCA/Tungsram tubes. It sounds AMAZINGLY clean to clean ish, really great edge of breakup into OD. It's not a tight gain so keep that in mind with any heavy riffing, will need a pedal. Onboard reverb is AMAZING. It's really BASS heavy though on the 15w portion, like keep it on 2 or less heavy. I can't say enough how good the clean sound is.

Had one of those! My budget was around 500€, but bought that one for 289€. Because It sounds exceptional for everything from Modern Rnb, Jazz, Psyrock, Funk and some Zeppelin/Sababth. Lovely little amp. But got stolen. Its that good!!

Bought a Cub 12R last year for £266.00. £399.00 for the new model? That some jump in price!

It's worse in Australia. Almost double the price for the newest cubs.
$550 for the second generation Cub12r combos vs $970 for these Super Cub 15W combos

Compared to the Cub 12R (15W), is there much of a difference ? 12R better or worse ? I like my Cub 12R but the Laney speaker is to ice picky to my ears. Any suggestions ? Blues On....💙

Keep the 12r and upgrade your speaker. Greenback. Vintage30/V-Type all sound rad.
