MBV's early releases are such a mystery to me
They have the most mysterious vibes of any rock I've ever heard wonder where it went in there later work... Guess the mystery got solved.
@@austinwarlock4766 C'mon don't you think that they got even more mysterious and magical?
@@ludwigschilling9761 Hell yeah. MBV are definitely one of the most mysterious bands to ever exist - their early releases are mysterious, and their later stuff sounds mysterious with its beautiful walls of noise and impenetrable ghostly vocals. It is this reason I think that makes them truly timeless - because of how mysterious they were their music can never be tied to any specific period in mainstream pop culture history.
I didn't expect this at all. It's like listening to a totally different band.
colour me surprised
If you like this... Check out the Telescopes
ian curtis voice vibes
its really Really post punk
well, maybe because they WERE a totally different band back then...
I'm an MBV fan and I only just found out about this album yesterday, its like finding out led zeppelin used to be a punk band.
They did?
Sounds like Echo and the Bunnymen fronting an Irish “Doors” Cover band. And I like it.
Just finished listening to 4 lp's by Echo and the Bunnymen and I sure found a relativity.
Yup...Cramps too
it kinda sounds like a strange mix between 50's Rockabilly and 60's Surf Rock filtered through the Ramone's style of punk rock
In the latter half of the 80s there was a trend for British and Irish bands to freshen up that sixties psychedelic sound. This seemed to be a a way in for them as come the cheap synths and better production of the late 80s and turn of the 90s they all seemed to wander off to other (better?) things. MBV to shoegaze, The Shamen (who also started life as a much more introspective 60s throwback band with more than a passing nod to shoegaze) put down their guitars and spliffs and took to Es and drum machines. It was an interesting time to be aware musically.
I'd not heard this before so thanks for sharing.
@@tonelemoan can you tell us some names?
@@enrikcalavera9298 this is a lot like the birthday party but some other bands to check out would be early primal scream and the gun club.
A lot of 60s influenced 80s music can be found on the c86 compilation
@@enrikcalavera9298 On the American side of 80's psychedelic revivalism you should look into the Paisley Underground movement of California. Groups like : Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, Game Theory, Thin White Rope, Green on Red, Long Ryders, Wednesday Week and The Three O'Clock will get you started. Rain Parade's Emergency Third Rail Power Trip is my favorite of the period and a good starting point. Others can tell you about the UK bands.
This version of My Bloody Valentine has a very 80's goth vibe too, though, and maybe that's more the sound you are looking to explore.
1. Forever and Again
[Verse 1]
Well they say that no love waits forever
But sometimes I feel like I've been waiting forever and again
Yeah, they say that no love lasts forever
But this yearning seems to last an age like a [?]
[Chorus]
Hey don't you know no man will never love or need you like I do
And nobody has to give a heart of selfish pure and true
Not ever babe
Now or ever babe
[Verse 2]
Well I can read your feeble mind
Your dangerous simplicity
Why just whisper [?] words forever
My position is impregnable
Gazing into those vaccant eyes makes a half man feel complete
[Chorus]
Hey don't you know no man will ever love or need you like I do
And nobody has to give a heart of selfish pure and true
Not ever babe
Now or ever babe
[Verse 3]
Alone I [?]
Stashed my feeble [?]
One laid in a milk like whitewashed world
And don't know damn well no one gives a damn?
[Outro]
Hey don't you know no man will ever love or need you like I do
And nobody has to give a heart of selfish pure and true
No, no man will ever love or need you quite like I do
Oh quite like I do
Yeah, quite like I did
Oh quite like I do
2. Homelovin' Guy
Some say that [?] is a crime and only might is right
They paint [?]
So if you really wanna know what's goin' down
Well just open your eyes and baby look around
I've seen so much and then that I can't take much more I
I'm a home loving guy who likes nothing better than a night beside the fire
A girl dressed in black with a whip in her hand
Will lacerate your back if you're that kind of man
So if you really want to take a look inside
Well baby take off your pants and [?]
I've seen so much and then that I can't take much more
I'm a home loving guy who likes nothing better than a night beside the fire
The four corners of earth and [?] sail the tides
You learn the law of the jungle if you wanna survive
So if you really wanna know what's goin' down
Well just open your eyes and baby look around
I've seen so much and then that I can't take much more I'm
A home loving guy who likes nothing better than a night beside the fire
Beside the fire
Said God, listen [?]
3. Don't Cramp my Style
4. Tiger in my Tank
Well let me be your lover, girl
Let me find out when
There's only one way outta this
And no need to pretend
The taste of blood is warm and sweet
And welcome to his lips
The congregation decimated
By the shrapnel of his rhetoric
I am you and you are me
And god is living in everyone
And Jesus cried a million tears
To save the lives of you and me
Yeah, I could be your lover, girl
Or I could be your friend[?]
Dig the mother, dress the lamb
And long live his suicide
Well, I could be a wise man[?]
Heaven knows how much I've tried
But neither time, nor cataclysm
Will change this tiger's stripes
Didn't my neighbors tell you [?]
5. The Love Gang
I fear the flying ships
My love kept you in the town
Gave up my troubled soul
Oh yeah, they got real soul
There were no strangers abound
Then I faced the betrayal
You got the drug to set my senses alight
You've been stupid, girl, tonight
We cross the narrow divide
The love can show us the way
The burning power of love
And city hall is in flames
Since while our angels are dead
Move through the cornered tree
You got the drug to set my senses alight
You've been stupid, girl, tonight
You come with me through the guards
Yeah, just like your guards
Where the too bold lie
So take a look around, all you see and all you need
All you can get, when you're down on your knees
Oh-oh, on your knees
The floating angels are dead
I hope it's black in the sky
Hold too much beauty to say
You gotta clear your eyes
The rain might mingle with clouds
And people dropping like flies
You got the drug to set my senses alight
You've been stupid, girl, tonight
Come with me through the guards
They're just like your guards
Where the too bold lie
So take a look around, all you see and all you need
All you can get, when you're down on your knees
Oh-oh, down on your knees
We cross the narrow divide
The love can show us the way
The burning power of love
And city hall is in flames
Since while our angels are dead
Move through the cornered tree
You got the drug to set my senses alight
Oh please for me, please, please, please
6. Inferno
7. The Last Supper
They set our tables in the stream
There's light it's screaming from the trees
There's gonna be the real shower
And all the ships fall in line
Look out the storm it's growing here
And here the body sinks or swims
So slip into your new red dress
We're gonna dance until we drown
I held the rose buds in my hands
But I can't feel it now
I saw a girl walked in my dreams
But she's immortal now
Oh was it hope we poured through my hands?
I turn a tear in this fantasy
Another day in the future's past
Just look up: our greatest fear
The fragrant blossoms of the fall
Turn to decay before my eyes
They pay the piper
For what it's worth
I always knew it had to end
I held the rose buds in my hands
But I can't feel it now
I saw a girl walked in my dreams
But she's immortal now
Oh was it hope we poured through my hands?
I turn a tear in this fantasy
Another day in the future's past
Just look up: our greatest fear
I held the rose buds in my hands
But I can't feel it now
I saw a girl walked in my dreams
But she's immortal now
Oh was it hope we poured through my hands?
I turn a tear in this fantasy
Another day in the future's past
Just look up: our greatest fear
The fragrant blossoms of the fall
Turn to decay before my eyes
The night is young and yeah it's late
It's so much later than you think
So slip into your new red dress and
Baby dance until we drown
Slip into your new red dress and
Baby dance until we drown
Oh ho ho ho ho hoo
Oh ho ho ho o wo wooo
the singer sounds like he can't make up his mind on whether he's ripping off Lux Interior or Nick Cave.
tsartodd Well, Colm Ó Cíosóig said this about David Conway: "He was crazy, a bit like Lux Interior"
He's better than both.
@@austinwarlock4766 idk if he’s better than nick cave, dunno who lux is actually
I love how varied and expansive MBV’s career is!
I was expecting complete garbage with the way the band used to speak about their past, but I really like this!
That was also my reaction. I can't hate this because I enjoy the sound, despite what the band think of this early material. Albums like Isn't Anything or Loveless are way more complex (maybe better?) but this also sounds nice imo
Reminds me a bit of the Birthday Party. Interesting.
They are influenced by
This sounds like the Cramps. Like a lot.... damn this is awesome.
Sho duz
They literally had a song called "Don't Cramp My Style".
It's like the Smith's meets the doors, Iggy pop, joy division, the cramps and loveless-mbv.
exactly the very first song sounds a little bit like Ian Curtis to me
sounds like my bloody valentine
simply idiotic. This sounds nothing like the critically acclaimed shoegaze band My Bloody Valentine
Sounds like the fucken Cramps
Johnny Morphine sounds like the stooges lol
Baked Sodium Kevin talks about how at the time they were really into The Cramps
@@dylanflanagan9754 the cramps sound cheezy compared to this. That's always been my number one problem with the cramps even though I like them this is a better and more serious version of them.
I heard they were influenced by the birthday party a lot back then and I can definitely hear it
Definitely influenced by The Birthday Party and The Cramps. The Last Supper 21:13 is pure The Doors worship.
I looked up how the singer on this EP looks nowadays and he's one really intimitading gothic guy.
Colm Ó Cíosóig said that the studio that they recorded this album at was so cheap that the engineer who was doing the mixing had to do a live gig that night, so he had to leave at 6 pm. "It took an afternoon to mix the record. One of the tracks was mixed in 10 minutes. We just put the faders up. 'Done! Next track.'"
Still sounds better quality wise than most of their records in the 1980s, several of which are resonate with jarring amounts of high-mids and treble. Maybe in some cases its just the case of a tinny needle drop, but certainly in cases like Ectasy and Wine, the label decided to just go ahead and release badly mastered audio to the displeasure of Kevin Shields. Not suprising he got extremely fed up having bad produced records released under his name and became over-obsessed.
I'm considerIng fixing some early mbv recordings up with some EQ just to make them easier on the ears.
@@samnicholson5051 Do yourself a great favor and invest in some decent audio gear, I recommend what I have which is a behringer graphic eq with a sub woofer output, a yamaha mixer panel, some Alesis studio monitors and a sub woofer. I always cut the treble and mids on the mixer, and cut the bass on the eq. I then crank up the sub woofer and it sounds powerful and clear. Remember always to cut with the EQ, not boost, and get adjust with your ears not your eyes.
This is absolutely not true. I was mixing this and this is not a joke. They wanted it this way and each track was done carefully. But I can tell you there was some 'speed' involved but not by me. Don't tell such fake stories if you haven't been there. OK? I was there and did the mix but my name is written wrong on the backside. I can live with that.
BTW: This youtube track doesn't sound very good. The original is better - less cut off heights, more bass and dynamics.
Sure, I don't make jokes here. The studio was Sound-Check PA in Berlin Wedding in Koloniestr. and I was the engineer. I also remember how the 'guitar glitches' were made and that we used our staircase as hall chamber. I also remember that I was close to throw the band out of the studio for something, I am not telling here. Yes sure, I did the mix and this was far away from 'mixing in 10 minutes' and 'just put the faders up'. We earned money with this at this time and this was serious business. My name is also on the back of the EP but written wrong. But it is OK this way. We had a Soundcraft 400 desk with 24 channels and a Tascam eight track tape recorder.
Yeah it is nice, that after over 35 years, there is still some interest in this record. Sure, I mean, this record was according the possibilities at this time, 1985. Therefore, the sound is not this good, however, I can assure you and everybody else, this is a completely uncompressed recording. No compressor or gate was used to make this recording. What was done during the mastering, I honestly don't know. This was done by another company and Dossier Records.
Thank you and please keep healthy in these Corona-virus times. To everybody else too!
you can hear what's yet to come in the last part/bridge of The Last Supper
abso-fucking-lutely. listening for the first time and this part is exactly what i was looking for when i decided to see what their old stuff sounded like. Amazing stuff.
Ha, ha. Loving the comments.
I bought this back in about 1988 when I was 17 years old.
To ME ...THIS IS what My Bloody Valentine do sound like !
The Birthday party? "Don't cramp my style".
The second track has such a cool riff! Especially in the tone change hahaha
This defititely is it this is your my bloody valentine
Or is it just the is your bloody valentine
Or is it my bloody valentine
i think- after all things considered, it's our bloody valentine.
This is what it takes to calm me down nowdays.
The last supper really is one of the most beautiful songs of all time, far more beautiful then the painting. Early my bloody valentine is a guilty pleasure for sure. #mybloodyvalentine
holyshit inferno is good. thats the mvb sound in vintage form
Tiger in the tank is the best song I think but inferno comes in at a close second.
Anyone ever heard that chipmunks record on 16 rpms? It sounds like that.
My Elvis Valentine
Idk about you guys, but I'm digging this one!
Same
Sounds exactly like Dave Vanian
I knew someone else heard it too. Lotta people hear Lux Interior--they're not wrong--but my ears immediately went to Dave Vanian first.
so its really the jazzmaster, they weren't using jazzmasters up until '88
Hahaha
re-approaching during a garage rock and surf punk phase---not bad!
This is amazing!!!
vocals remind me a lot of ian curtis
dave conway🖤
This is MBV? they sound like a much different band here.
Yes.
@@NOWtheband I was just displaying my shock, I know who they are haha
@@kamrynrist6049 - I know. I was born to take the piss, ha ha ha!
yeah their lineup was completely different at this point, the only people in the group at the time who stayed were kevin and colm. they had a completely different lead singer
Great sound! Total surprise as compared to Isnt and Loveless...me recuerda a Cramps!!!😊
im shook
Amo fattutamente questa band ❤😂👍
sounds a bit like early horrors
OLD MBV
2024 y aun sonando!!! 🔥🔥🔥
surprising at first listen but this is a great listen
Tiger in my tank is a banger
Reminds me of Misfits and Echo and the Bunnymen
0/10, no vacuum noises
The best!
Sounds incredible in Arizona 2020.
They sound like the fall became an Elvis tribute band.
This is the best comment on here
The Last Supper sounds like Light My Fire solo section
100% true
I think it's my favorite track off this album.
very punk i love it
this might aswell be a different band. Reminds me of the doors.
@Danny Underground yeah very psychobilly
The Last Supper reminds me of the Dammed
Second song main riff sounds a lot like Nirvana's About a girl
Helping me quit smoking cigs in public
Thank you.
conway sounding like ian curtis its really post punk
what the faaaaack? this sounds like scary rockabilly (or the first song does, anyway)
Punkabilly?
Gothabilly?
scary rockabilly lmao
Psychobilly, gothic rock, post-punk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is brilliant! Almost as good as Isn't Anything or Loveless, just in a different way
lovely
very surprised, this is good!
Fucking intense shit.....love the old and the new!!!
is it the same band ??? cos that really blow me away, and few years ago there was a band named the horrors with a such a cool track named karen, and i thought cool demo by the horros but it turns out that it was a whole different band so probably same shit happens here??
My Jazzy Valentine
"Jesus cried a million tears to save the lives of you and me #haha"
Thought of listening to
Bauhaus first then it
changed into Gunclub
The gun club
totally different, I🖤Isn't Anything
I hear a slight smashing pumpkins 1979 in the last track chorus
by
some of it sounds like the later records by daughters (esp. track 3) :)
no entiendo
jens frey
listen to hell songs by daughters, it's what I'm refering to.
+Albert Sirup Ok.
You mean "earlier", right?
The noise rock band daughters?
They really changed directions drastically, huh?
but it happened in increments
Sick
goo goo muck
Really not an awful release, all things considered. Not outright bad at all... Forgettable and kind of unoriginal, and nowhere near as good as their later work, but it sounds alright.
I'm thinking about buying a copy on vinyl but I probally won't listen to it much so maybe I will pass.

This is MBV?
Was this before Butcher joined the Band?
Yes. The band's original lead singer was David Conway, who appeared on MBV's records until the Sunny Sundae Smile EP.
I think I prefer Imagination Movers over these lot.
Who's Singing in this Album?
Lucas Varas david conway
L O L
that was before the mi6 recruited them ?
shoegaze
You think this is bad, try listening to the very first Ministry album.
This isn't on the same level as Loveless, but it's still good.
This is so much better than Loveless
Nah.
Cool album but Late MBV > Original MBV always
Ric nah, I don't like shoegaze
vigilant-ish fair enough , I dig me some shoe gays
Spot the contrarian
holy shit what is this. not like them at alllll
this sucks huh
not great, but it's a ok album I guess.
Nah
kyli Nope
I love it
If it was popular in the 80's (which is wasn't) you'd be saying iggy pop sucks instead probably.
GaraGe. Tape tells a lot about the subsequent my bloody valentine productions. I'm elated to learn that The Cramps are among early influences.
