    Best details on the valves & gauges settings. More of that is good

    I'm very new to all of this but here's what I've heard the consensus is:
    1. 1/4 turn on acet, but open the oxygen all the on the tank. The O is high pressure and you need to back seat the valve. Opening part way can allow O to leak around the stem or seal.
    2. Supposedly they changed the "A before O" to "O before A". Not sure why but from what I heard the forever was was A then O and now the society of welders or whatever decided the other way was better.
    Glad I don't need a new tip for heating. I used that one for cutting for the first time and now needed to heat something. Thanks.

      What I have seen and read is that torch manufactures say to shut off O before A, but nearly everyone else says A before O. I'm nearly positive that when I was in shop class thirty ago the teacher told us to shut of the preheat oxygen first. That is the knob closest to the tip. That agrees with the book that came with my new torch. If you hear a loud snap when you turn the knob off, don't do that again! My guess is that they changed the order because everyone forgets which oxygen to turn off first so if you turn off the acetylene first there is only one knob and the only downside is the soot build up.

      Simple way to remember is you only ever want the acetylene alone. So startup: acetylene then oxygen. Shutdown: oxygen then acetylene.

    Those tips are made for cutting if you do heating you will broke them . The oxygen jet must flow from the inside to cool them too

    And while I'm at it, you need to explain to people why it's imperative to open the oxygen slowly, and why it's wise to turn your body and face away from the tank when doing so.

    You probably want to mention why the acetylene is so volatile. It’s because of how it’s stored in the tank. Proper psi is really important because sometimes the cylinder can’t produce enough gas and that can cause blowback. Especially in a colder environment.

    • @lajoswinkler
      @lajoswinkler Před 9 měsíci

      It's not so volatile because of how it's stored in the tank. It's stored in the tank the way it is _because_ it's so volatile.
      It's volatile because of its molecular structure.

    • @colinlpeace
      @colinlpeace Před 9 měsíci

      @@lajoswinkler Uh… I dunno. Sounds like semantics to me.
      It’s not just stored in a tank. There’s a monolithic filler and acetone in acetylene tanks that can interfere with the air pressure when the tank is low or cold. And conversely, pressure increases the warmer it gets.
      So yeah it controls the volatility but in certain conditions it does it too well.
