  • We have misplaced national priorities.
Americans see us spending - with almost no debate - nearly $1 trillion a year on the military.
We have unlimited money for bombs and tanks.
But we can’t find the money to provide healthcare to all people?

Increased government funding to NIH so grant holders will not depend on big pharma for money. Public funding of congressional elections. Reversal of Citizens United. No more subsidies to oil and gas. Require oil and gas to fully supply US market prior to foreign sales. Convert utilities to publicly held entities. Massively increase infrastructure spending with emphasis on public transportation. Yeah like there's nothing wrong with wanting a stronger military, especially with adversaries like Russia and China out there. But the vast majority of the military's budget (and the lives of its soldiers) have instead gone to rampaging through the Middle East, slaughtering civilians to take their oil, or invading communist/socialist countries to stop those movements regardless of the will of that country's people, in the name of capitali- (cough) uh sorry, 'freedom'. And then the fighting keeps going because wouldn't you know, when you slaughter people's families for no reason for no reason, it's much easier for someone to radicalise them into a terrorist so long as the 'protectors of the free world' are a common enemy.
Aid for Ukraine and reinforcing the naval presence near China and Taiwan are the only sensible things I've seen the US military do in the entire time I've been alive. How much of a total percentage of the US budget from the last 20 years did that take? 2%? 3%? Not even? Not even close probably.

Feel the Bern! I had a friend put his own name on a local in for a school board position and he won by one vote - he was the only one who put his name in for the position. The school board didn’t know he was an Ace CPA. He couldn’t believe what was being done with tax payer’s money. Bonds had been paid off, but money was still collected every year “because the people were used to paying it and we can use it for a “rainy day”. Gee, maybe the people could use it for a rainy day themselves. Large amounts of money were held in account accruing interest. The account was set up for a specific project but the project was stopped. But the money couldn’t be use for anything else because it was collected just for the (discontinued) project.
We see the city fear monger, saying the fire department needs more funds so they can get to your house on time. But then they say the money will be spent on staff - even thought it’s traffic congestion that slows down the fire trucks. But wait, there’s more. Turns out, the money goes into a general fund that can be spent on other projects. It’s not exclusively for the Fire Department.
When Gov’t asks you for more money, they already have enough. They just have to change their priorities. Reading the financial history of the F-35 fighter jet will make you cry when you realize what could have been done with the money. But some people and corporations get very rich while exercising great financial irresponsibility.
Many people lost their life savings in the banking debacle of 2006. Some were fortunate to have have social security - that the Republicans are trying to take away. Recall that when those same financial institutions cried for “bail out” money, they gave themselves $600,000 bonuses with it.
My sadness is Bernie isn’t going to last forever. And I don’t see a mini-Bernie out there training to take his place.

And its Bernie's policies that people are fed up with. Like Democrats using non stop open immigration, high taxes, and over regulation to put slack into the labor market year after year. Which gives all the power to employers, driving down wages, and immigration drives up housing prices at the same time. To the point tens of millions of Americans don't have any money left over at the end of the month. And it's the low wages and lack of power at the bottom that allows the excesses at the top. Causing the wealth gap.
Compare that to JFK style conservative policies of using low taxes, smaller government, deregulation, and less immigration to tighten up the labor market. Which gives power back to workers. Raises wages. Allows for advancement. Allows for mobility. Allows people with bad job records or few skills to get jobs. And gives people dignity.

Conversely I have little respect for those who promote, send and spend enormous amount of tax payers money (billions of dollars) to fund war machines and do not adequately take care of the vulnerable and all citizens in the USA.
Where is the economic justice for senior Americans, where is the economic justice for handicapped Americans and our veterans, where is the economic justice for Americans who have no or insufficient healthcare, where is the
economic justice for those who are working yet not able to buy foods for proper nutrition for themselves or theirs? I could go on and on.
Further, Americans neither want or need a dictator or any authoritarian leader (i.e.Donald Trump) who will attempt to impose a political system on Americans after
the North Korea or Russia models of government.
Americans must now develop a stronger mental and fighting spirit, resolve and the sticktoitiveness to convey and demand that those in the house and senate listen to us. In order to combat contagious apathy. "We the People" must categorically affirm that we will not relinquish our principles of American Democracy in any form to foreign or political ideologies that are not congruent with the America Constitution and Democratic values.

And most of that military spending doesn’t go to our troops & their families. As Bernie says, it mainly goes to contractors. He didn’t mention here that contractors often grossly overcharge or under-deliver & that many now do jobs once performed for much lower pay, (& sometimes to higher standards), by US troops.

Also politicians can purchase stocks of those contractor orgs so its a win-win for them. Like big defense contractors make so much. Booz Allen, Lockheed, like almost anything in the DMV area.

I agree with you...and I'm so sorry. Many in this country lack the ability to think critically and are deficient in empathy, both of which are the problem. Some of us see exactly what's going on, but we are the minority. I have little hope and a lot of guilt.

Born Nov., 1945 in Oregon, and moved to California in 1948. Guess what? We had very decent new and government financed, housing, for all 7 of us, which gave us financially stressed people a good start in life. Mexicans, European white people, African Americans, Oklahomans--All of us together receiving Government sponsored good schools, housing, coaches for sports in the new facilities, free local health care and the support of reasonably paid jobs. All of this due to the ability to care for the population which was educated and supported. You could say that I have benefited, including almost free University, to become a medical doctor and have thrived in my ability to navigate a fair and prosperous country. That was turned on its head by 1980 when the disgusting pursuit of wealth started the rot that the U S has created. Dog eat dog country now. You want strength as an American? Then support each other as we were before.

Buying into propaganda and overt culture-war division has ruined our country.

As George Orwell pointed out in 'The Road to Wigan Pier', politicians constantly told the people that the government simply couldn't afford to eliminate poverty. Yet when the ruling classes' own finance and security was menaced by the First World War they were suddenly able to spend as much money on armaments per day as would have swept away every slum in Wigan.
