  • @KateGrealy1
    @KateGrealy1 Před 5 lety +9

    Yes! The best advice I received starting out was to get an education and a career outside music so I was not at the mercy of the industry. It was a famous (exhausted) blues singer who told me this when I was singing in bars at 17 years of age. My non music career has allowed me a flexible life. To live travel, learn. It has allowed me to pay for good mixing mastering and recording, for good artwork and branding. And an education and life experience means you're less likely to be screwed over in the industry cause you have nouse. Well said Pharell

    Some of you need back-up plans, because you haven't gotten your reality check that music isn't for everyone. Or at least not being a star. Sometimes being behind the scenes is cool too.

      I agree.. even true musicians know how to brand themselves to have a safety net to fall back on, you can't just put all your faith into one thing thinking it will go as planned, that is the most naïve thing a human can do

  • @SpiritUplifted
    @SpiritUplifted Před 9 lety +98

    a lot of people are disagreeing with the back up plan idea. I would say, don't think of anything in terms of being plan A or B, C, D, or whatever. point is, life is about learning many things, so don't constantly focus on just one thing. the more you learn, the more chances you'll have at being successful at something. you may have major success in something you never expected. for example, I'm good at making music, but I also have some potential in acting, hair dressing, and maybe even business administration. I'm putting efforts into all those things, because I don't know where life will take me.

    • @charminglove212
      @charminglove212 Před 9 lety +15

      It sounds like you have no idea what you wanna be in life. Some people already have it down on one goal they wanna achieve. Yes you can be successful at something you never expected but you wanna be successful on something you wanted to happen. That is possible if you put the work into it you CAN achieve it if you don't give up. It sounds like you have multiple choices and whatever choice comes out successful to you that's what your going for. I believe in working part time until your dream starts taking off but not doing full because your already making money and your living decently. Your wanna live doing what you love not just doing an average job because you have to survive.

    • @SpiritUplifted
      @SpiritUplifted Před 9 lety +4

      my main passion is and always will be music, first and foremost. I happen to be open to learning other things as well though, and there's absolutely nothing with that. I can't predict the future, and while there's musical goals I want to acheive, I don't believe in setting complicated goals that might just fall apart.

    • @charminglove212
      @charminglove212 Před 9 lety +14

      No one can predict the future but you can change the future by the actions you choose to do in the present. Believe or not this is the time where if you wanted to be a musician you could. You can go independent you don't need a record label to be successful. And if you want to do other things go ahead no one is stopping you. There's lots of artist who have perfumes, owing there own clothing line they have there own businesses. It could be good for you because if your gonna go independent your gonna have to invest in some money lol. And since you have other things that you like you can use it to make money so you can invest it in marketing your music. Life is about taking risk you can't say your gonna fail if you haven't even tried if you did fail get up and try again and change your strategy. But if your gonna do all that don't forget the main thing you wanted to do in life :)

    • @SpiritUplifted

      I totally agree with probably all of that. what I'm working on is selling beats as a producer for people to use. I signed up on sellfy where people can directly, and it's not a stupid ass company charging me to be on it. It'd be nice to get people to notice my own actual music as an artist. probly more sensible to offer my music as a service. perhaps I should sell my own written songs as well...

    NOt everyone can have a plan B, C, or D...sometimes you have to take that high risk of only having plan A, and if it works out, it pays big, if it doesn't you lose big.

    • @willvice3998
      @willvice3998 Před 7 lety +15

      You and i have the same mentality. The way I see it, if I spend all of my time on plans B and C it would take away time that I could truly spend on perfecting plan A. Why worry about having plan B and C when Plan A( in my case, music) is my goal.

    • @B61zz13
      @B61zz13 Před 7 lety +1

      In some ways, "go big or go home" is the right mentality for some, especially if you already don't have anything to lose (9/10 times it benefits you). Sometimes though, you can make a plan B, C, etc. on the fly if you're well at it, and even just having a degree in music is, in itself, a backup plan... it's just a matter of retracing your steps and being able to catch yourself before you fall too deep into a hole that will be harder to recover from. Take it all with a grain of salt

      Will Vice Thanks a lot. Profession wise, I am looking forward to being a psychologist and running my own private practice, helping people with their personal problems. I hope never to have to administer drugs though.
      At the same time, I do want to make music to some extent, perhaps to make for others to listen to or even to keep myself entertained while I go to the gym.
      I also have a small interest in doing business and expanding what I have going on with Amazon at the moment.
      Overall though, I feel like I can do almost anything I want in life, physically speaking. In a humble sense, I want to help others, help them with that they want and need, but also lighten things up and make people smile and maybe shed a tear.
      The idea of having just a Plan A vs more backup plans is still something I adapt to. Sometimes I do like going full sail ahead with big plans. Other times I have to make sure not to crash and burn and carry a parachute of some sort. It's a paradox for sure, but even picking one vice the other is a powerful decision of its own, versus doing nothing.
      Feel free to add your own flavour and what you want to accomplish in life. Seems like you have something pulling you towards music heh.

    Sometimes you need connection more than practice .

    • @alekszenofficial
      @alekszenofficial Před 6 lety +8

      exactly, what most people don't seem to realize is that you can have all the passion in the world but if you can't make that one vital connection or if you rub a certain person the wrong way, you'll probably not have nearly as much "success" as you have wished for. people aren't buttons that you can turn on and off to magically like you and help you succeed, no matter how much wishful thinking and action you take.
      Do your music and promote yourself the best way you can, but there are a lot of drug users and sycophants in the music industry, so if you don't "make it" - don't be too hard on yourself.

    I'm 45 with my twin brother. We graduated in Graphic design and went to work in Advertising agencies big and small. But in our hearts we love music. Hell! At my 40s I just found out singing and writing lyrics is my passion. Music is our passion! it's like we are in love with this girl our true love. But if you ask us to leave her and go love someone else miss A, miss B, or C, this we can not do! We may go and screwing around with other girls but in the end we will leave them coz we're not in love with them. Now at the age of 45 we starting as an Indie musician. We write our own stuff, trying to marketing our selves. It's our passion there for we don't feel like It's a job! We do it and give it 170% ! We have nothing to loose now It's do or die! I don't know may be we might end up being homeless! But this is one life! I don't think there will be a next life so we'd rather die with our guitars and mic in our hands. Are we scared? Hell yeahhh! We are bloody scared! But we still doing it. I don't know how to explain this passion in side us. Anyways, may you all make it with whatever you do with great success! Most of all be very happy with what you do! Peace!

    While we all have to find a way to feed ourselves as a budding musicians.... we must not let the idea of Plan B discourage us from continuing your art no matter what. Is the desire really just to blow up? Is success as an artist now measured by the approval of others? If you work to make the best, most honest music YOU can, you have already succeeded in the greater battle. We all have some degree of lameness in our lives, that does not make you a sell out... and dont let it stop you from doing your music EVERY DAY. Now it's time to share your music with the world... just sharing what is already meaningful to you with others, no fear. Don't deprive us of your work

Sounds quite pretentious if you ask me. Especially since music is inspirational. FYR, Pharell has blatantly taken ideas from other artist and producers so that throws your perception out the window. Moral of the story do what’s best for you, if you don’t wanna have a plan b and risk it big don’t, if you do, that’s also fine, if you wanna do both (have a part time hustle and chase the goal at the same time) that’s fine too, it’s your call, there’s no straight rule…

    It's smart to have a backup plan, people say don't have one so you can focus 100% on whatever it is (which you can still focus on it just be smart). It's ignorant to think you shouldn't have a backup plan because that just means you'll be prepared for one thing (that may not happen) and unprepared for everything else.

    i think he's right because life doesn't always go as planed you really have to listen and understand that a plan b dosent mean giving up on your dreams but it means that the plan b might be what feeds you one day ...most people will just dream but never make there dreams comes true ... and why would you wanna die because your dreams don't comes true if everybody was thinking like that most people would be dead

    • @DanSanCode
      @DanSanCode Před 9 lety +4

      Most people aren't dead but their not living either...Having a plan B is accepting failure. When you fail you should get back up, you are guaranteed to fail if you chase your dreams, the question is will you keep going? Most don't...Most don't even start...Most are not alive

      Most people aren't dead but their not living plan B is deciding to surrender when you can just keep going. The reality is succeeding isn't easy or convenient and that's why most people don't truly achieve the success they truly want. Failure is important and so is perserverence. Abraham Lincoln failed almost his entire life failing at many businesses and 16 elections. What if he had a plan B...seriously think about that. He didn't have a plan B but if he did our world would be drastically different. What if MLK had a plan B? He feared death but pushed on anyway bit never gave up and he died for his dreams. The winner state of mind does not believe in giving up because it literally is death of the soul...

      Dan San plan B is for the sake money. unfortunately, we need it to keep ourselves alive. just cuz you fail, doesn't mean you give up...but you don't wanna be broke either. it's easy to forget to continue pursuing your dreams when you already make some decent money at an ok job, but I guess even with that job (aka plan B), you wanna keep working at something you're passionate about. a lot of people don't, and in that case, you're right, cuz that's when people are surrendering. that's my take on it anyway.

      You can build your dream part time while working a day job and transition. I don't see any logic in going full time without the proper systems and resources into a project. There is no need to struggle like that, I feel you though. It's just that I think people perceive transitioning as such a big thing when it can be broken down into daily practice instead

    Great advice Pharell have a PLAN B and get an education. Most people have lofty ideas about who they are or what they're "going to be" but don't realize even your hardest efforts still may not yield what you want, success especially in the entertainment industry is both about hard work & LUCK - which you don't have complete control over.

      Charming Love but a lot of people probably work just as hard as she does, and still are not that successful. luck is a part of it. being musically successful would be WAY easier if the only thing you had to do was work hard and be talented. there's singers who barely do anything and they're filthy rich. then you have super talented musicans who clearly put more effort into what they do and hardly anyone knows them. anyway, just making a point. not saying you're wrong.

      very true .. however with all the hard work most do not know where or how to put it towards the right area..I think beyonce seen who to be around at the right times to get put into position in order to start controlling her world. I think luck can be misinterpreted within how one person could reach such a high place. but the one thing any person can not be without is consistency. That is something I see that overrules why a person is finally famous or successful. but how long can someone keep there level up so high .. hard work within consistency is just hard work alone lol

    I disagree, what he's saying because I hardly doubt that he had a back up plan or else he would've been doing it right now. Back up plans our literally death to the soul and the most successful people did not have back up plans they had a goal and they went for it. Doing multiple things are just gonna mess up your main goal. I don't want to be old and regret everything or be one of those people that only can't wait for is retirement. If you just want to live a boring life with a job that you ''sorta of'' like or "its ok" job than that's on you. Studies show that only 13% of people are actually enjoying there jobs that's really sad. Life is short just do a job that makes you happy.

      Most of the things that we love to do is not financially safe unless you love calculating the chemical equations of magnesium peroxide or some shit like that.. Being an artist is not going to support you if you didn't make it big.. Yes you're doing what you love you're getting enough money to enjoy your life a little bit but you throw away your chance to become a doctor for example.. The reality might not hits you now but when you start to have a family like
      If you ain't getting enough money for your family by doing shit that you love it's like digging your own grave.. Yeah you might have fun now but when you finally have family you might regretting it.l because you can't support them you can't send your daughter or son to college because you wanted to be a fucking artist instead of a doctor plus you might end up being broke when you no longer have the power to do what you love..
      There's nothing wrong about chasing your dreams.. But you have to know the limits like you need to re evaluate yourself and think ahead about your future where you wanted to be in 20-30yrs for example. work extremely hard chasing your dreams and turn it into reality. It's not going to be a fun exciting journey it's going to be hard real hard but when you get the results you're working for it's priceless man.. Best of luck to all the dreams chaser 😂

    Pharrell' s advice isn't bad advice. The music industry is highly competitive, and it sometimes could be a challenge to make a living. It's not for everyone, and it's very expensive. You have to make a lot of sacrifices. Instead of saving up to buy a house, you have to spend money on producing your music. Which can cost thousands of dollars. The average full-time performer is NOT rich and is lucky to afford food and rent. This could be a problem for a lot of people. You have to sacrifice owning a home, settling down and starting a family, and etc. You might have to take gigs you don't like or even hate, because you have to pay your bills. Sometimes perusing your music part-time is better, because you have more creative freedom to produce the type of music you want. Your not some company's puppet or cash cow. Artist can create music that is meaningful to them, instead of creating something they don't like because they are contracted to.

If you don't and are just hell bent on being famous you'll end up going mad. musicians make music because it's what we do regardless of any success that might gained from it. That's a bonus if it happens. plan B. while you're trying to get your music going you still need to pay the bills. That's life. Try and find a balance.

    As a budding songwriter (and that's all I want to be), if I write the lyrics and produce the music for a song. I own the copyright. As the copyright owner I am also the music publisher. Now, I want to make money off of my intellectual property (or song). In reference to record labels how does it work? Do I pitch my song to them and then LICENSE my song to them (if they decide that they want to make a master recording of my song for/with one of their artists), or do I simply SELL my (copy)right of the song outright to the record label?

    • @kmasonsos
      @kmasonsos Před 5 lety

      7notes you can sell it to them. But if it’s good enough they will probably do a contract that lets them own the song. You are still the songwriter so you will get paid for that anyway.

  • @jacobswick4558

    I don't get why everyone is so critical of this. Pharrell is being REALISTIC. Of course, having heart and keeping faith in what you believe you do well is very important because it drives you to keep pushing on with your dream, but what happens when you add pressure into that mix? When you think, I need to make sure this works the way I picture it in my head right now at this moment.. that's when things become synthetic and forced, rather than having a plan b, or what you have set up to make sure you can do if your dream isn't really working HYPOTHETICALLY, things become more natural and more wholesome.
    Having a second option isn't giving up on the idea of pursuing your dreams, it's being realistic and keeping your mind on that right level for success.
    Side note: not many people like to hear this, but despite passion, it IS possible for somebody to work and work at something and really just not have the skill for it. I don't necessarily believe in the thought that "you have it or you don't", I think working hard plays a large role in that, but I still somewhat believe in the possibility of the "you don't" part.

    • @charminglove212

      "When you think, I need to make sure this works the way I picture it in my head right now at this moment.. "
      Nothing comes out the way you plan exactly.
      "Side note: not many people like to hear this, but despite passion, it IS possible for somebody to work and work at something and really just not have the skill for it. I don't necessarily believe in the thought that "you have it or you don't", I think working hard plays a large role in that, but I still somewhat believe in the possibility of the "you don't" part."
      That's why people work on that skill until it gets better. No one just already plays piano perfectly they practice. no one that just starting singing just belt high notes, they practice. practice makes perfect. And hard work can get you really far.

    • @jacobswick4558
      @jacobswick4558 Před 9 lety

      The first part, you just agreed with exactly what I said; my point was that, people get freaked out when things don't line up the "way they pictured it" (i.e. hey i'm gunna start rapping, the first person to hear me is the owner of a recording label and I'm hitting it big instantly... my point was there's a lot of trial and tribulation)
      The second part, yes, I agree. My metaphor to relate to you is this:
      Johnny wants to be a mathematician. He dreams about it every waking and sleeping moment of his life. Johnny's brain, though, is not wired out to be a mathematician. Though he practices day in and day out and learns each fundamental exclusively, he doesn't know where to start when given a math problem to think critically for.
      Johnny was not called out to be a mathematician, nor will he "succeed' at it (succession has many definitions, whether you're making money doing it or not).
      In my mind, the same exact concept can be applied to music. Yes, you may practice piano or guitar or even a digital music program and become a master at it, knowing every thing you're "supposed to do when you're supposed to do it" (I.e. a producer creating music that complies with everything else he hears; therefore making music how it is SUPPOSED to sound and POSSIBLY even getting mild success doing it).
      This is not success to me and is not someone who is meant to be a musician. A musician (or even going back to the mathematician analogy) is a person that can critically and creatively adapt to the environment handed to them and come out with (at this point) a TRULY successful product. This is where the mathematician analogy gets a little off, only in the sense that a math solution can only be DEFINITELY successful, yet music is only OPINIONATEDLY successful, but both are successful internally as long as their true following has brought them there.
      May be a long ass youtube comment but I'm very drunk coming from a White Panda concert (great in concert) and even MORE passionate about this topic.
      Have a great night/ whenever time you read this and hope you have the time to view my insight...

      Agreed. Look at someone like Kanye West - no diss to Ye because he is a creative great but creativity aside he can play no instruments, he can’t really sing, and in terms of music theory he probably doesn’t know about any scales or modes or how to read sheet music or anything.
      Instead it’s his pure passion & internal creative drive that got him where he is. How he kept listening & listening to music & building a database of songs in his life so - even if he didn’t have the knowledge of the theory - he still lived and breathed recorded music and was able to build an almost 20 year career off of that now.
      Of course not saying to aspire to be like that, do learn instruments & theory as a more foolproof option like Pharrell did, but still have the creativity, work ethic & determination intact that others more skilled than you may be lacking, and you’ll definitely have a huge bonus against competition.

    • @KaizerMan
      @KaizerMan Před 5 lety

      Jacob Swick I definitely agree with that comment. Everything we do as musicians or as artists for any art form is either creative or constructive. Constructive being the science & barebones logistics behind it but creativity being the passion & vision of what you want to put into place.
      Truly great artists imo do not need to be the best construction-wise with the traditional standards of their platform, rather it’s their creativity that makes them great. People like Bill Withers, Steve Jobs, Dr Dre, etc were never constructively well informed, but creatively became some of the greatest of all time in their fields. There are just tonnes of examples.
      Being solely good constructively will get you a nice job as an instructor or teacher for your industry showing your expertise to others, but having the creative vision along with that is what really separates someone as the cream of the crop
