Early seasons still had the 90s innocence. And Chase was sticking to his Analyze This pitch. Then 9/11 happened (I saw this movie, I thought it was bullshit) and people weren’t in the mood for levity and the show became moody and introspective.
Also, props to the writers for not leaning on 9/11 and Iraq too much. There were some storylines but it could have easily turned into “Tony becomes an FBI informant and goes to Diarrhoeastan to secure the release of Agent Harrish from a group headed by a nephew of Matush.”

The whole overriding theme of the sopranos is the downfall of the Italian-American mafia. They go from huge crews with lots of cash flow, controlling courts, politicians, running powerful empires, to paranoid small timers bickering over what used to be small amounts of cash (in their world), e.g. tony not waiting to pay his closest family friend (Hesh), Paulie barely covering the fair he sponsors every year (leading to the ride crash), etc, and only the most pshychotic and self-centered mobster survived in the end, Paulie (self-centered being the exact opposite of what the mob was about "family") .
This is why the second part of season 6 was filmed so dark (also represents the downfall of tony soprano when he's eventually killed). The Italian mafia today is a shell of its former self and will never return to its past glory (Rico laws make sure of that, members turn informant since guaranteed 20+ years vs being a rat is a hard tradeoff for most, paranoia is everywhere). There's also no honor code now (although you can argue their never was), rules are bent all the time, no difference in the mafia today than the crips and bloods for example (except for the suits), the OGs left are self serving and pshychotic and not capable or intelligent enough to run an empire like Paulie.
Honestly watch the show again, but without the lens of them being cool, and you realize they are just a bunch of selfish pshycotic scum (when I was young and first watched this show I thought they were so cool, but damn, took a step back and realized the show is doing the exact opposite of glorifying the mafia almost the entire 6 seasons). Couple examples off the top of my head, 1) Chrisy and jackie jr robbing a charity benefit, 2) chrissy trying to get his drug buddy clean while loan sharking him, beating him up and causing him to relapse 3) Tony almost fucking his cousins fiancee, or 4) Best example, a bunch of mobsters sitting down all day smoking cashing government checks(from skimming construction sites, housing projects etc) around a table on Columbus day complaining about native indians sitting down all day smoking and caching government checks (that scene was GENIUS writing).

One thing that always puzled me about Tony was how much the possibility of going to prison scared him. Every time there was a serious threat of prison like the Pussy situation or the Bevelaqua murder, or the gun case in the final episodes, he had a serious nervous breakdown. Tony was not a coward. He did not seem that afraid even when there were attempts on his life. He did not panic or go into deep depression like he did here when the NY war started of when Uncle Junior tried to get him whacked. But whenever prison is even mentioned, he visibly panics. Which is odd considering doing time is seen as a part of the life, almost natural and even necessery for the most wiseguys. It is excepted. And Tony did time a little himself. So why is this that scares him the most, even more than death? Di something happened to him when he was in prison?
