This little Dart was the hot item back in 1965. Boasting a 273 4 speed from the factory backed by a Sure Grip rear, this car was certainly a ripper back in the day. Now, with a humble 318, can we bring it back to life once more and make it hit the road? Stick around to the end to find out if we can drag this beauty from the grave!

This is one of Dylan's grooviest finds in a while. It deserves the full treatment like the Challenger got.

Just a Quick safety tip. Bring along a few pieces of 3/4 plywood to use under the jack and stands when on ground. They will be much more stable and keeps the car from falling over.

Great find Dylan. Not sure what you are wanting to do with the Dart but you might want to check the fender tag first to see what engine it came with from the factory. If there's a number "31" under the AB then that would indicate it came with the hi po 273/235 HP 4-barrel engine. Being it had a dual point distributor, four-barrel carb on a stock intake and chrome air cleaner, my guess it was born with a ho-po 273 making it a very desireable Dart GT, especially with 4-speed and posi rear. My guess is the original 273 went south and a 318 replaced it using the dual point distributor, carb, intake, and air cleaner from the HO 273. You should be proud you did a great job saving it from the crusher so far!

In high school I had a 1964 Dart Station wagon that had a 340 and a 4 speed out of a 69 Barracuda Formula S. 8 3/4 sure grip with the 3.23 gears. It was a beast! It was originally a slant six car with 3 on the tree ...wish I still had it! LOL.

Dad had one of these and it was the only car he bought off the showroom floor. His was a 66 GT in yellow. He's 75 and still talks about it. Called it a "drag dart".

A stick shift with a weak starter can be tow started, and spun much faster than any starter could ever crank it. It could even be almost redlined to start. Doubly useful with old diesels, especially if you have a parking spot on a hill.

Stanley Kubick,There were only 18,000 V8 GTs built in 1965, maybe Check your fact's by engine, yeah they built 40,000 Total units with the GT trim package, but not that many V8's ,this car is a V8.
Chrysler does have the dampers inside the valve springs on high performance applications like the 273, and the 340...there may be a possibility that these are the high performance heads. Back when working in the salvage yard, this is one tell tale on which heads were good to use. Most all Mopars big or small block that were high performance had these valve springs.
I have a 1965 Dart with the cable operated automatic transmission...what a nightmare! Trying to adjust it to where the gears engage and align with the column is virtually impossible. What I would give for the 4 speed set-up here!
The 1965 A-body is an eye catcher, though. Hope this lady gets a chance at a new life.

The first car I never had. I bought a 66 FuryIII from my dad. It had a 273 4 speed. I was 15 and Dad drove it to work till I got my license. Problem was he totaled it before I got to drive it. He wasn’t hurt and the car was probably too much for me to start with anyway. You guys always bring back memories.

There's a Dodge 273 commando engine on market place right now for 400. Would make a cool restoration.
273 a great engines most of the internals are forged something the 318 never had. I would love to get a 273 and 400 bucks is a good deal the 273 has the same stroke as the 318 and 340 only difference is the bore is different then the 318 and the 340
A 318 would give you more horsepower than the 273. The 340 would be a good engine as well. The 360 would create more problems because of being external balanced.
why would any sane person downgrade to a 273...treat them like the 265 sbc...cool, but obsolete as hell. 318 is better all day.
@@frigglebiscuit7484 The 273 has forged internals unlike most 318s. The closed chamber heads have decent compression unlike any 318 past 1971. Plus the 273 has at least some racing/performance heritage for old school cool. The 318 is Mopar's Chevy 307.
No real aftermarket mods for a 273 to get even 300 hp.
Not even with the solid lift commando engine.
Get a 360 crate engine with aluminum heads.
The dual valve springs usually factory on the high perf. LA small blocks, esp. w/manual trannys cuz they typically hit higher rpms.. I got a sneaky suspension that MAYBE the just the bottom-end of the 273 gave out...and MAYBE the 273 high perf. heads were slapped on the when the 318 for some extra kick. Look between the plugs for a possible capital 'J' to see if they are the desired factory J-heads. It's a long shot but it's unlikely to see HP valve springs on 318 heads unless they stuck a cam in it too. You can also check the casting # and date code under the valve cover too learn more and ofc if u ever have the heads off u can see if there are 1.88/1.60 valves or the cherished 2.02/1.60s...prolly 1.88"s tho, buy u never know. But yeah, dual valves means high lifts and higher compression most of the time. Hope you scored some 1.88" or 2.02" heads...pref. some better flowing, hard to find factory 'J' hears. Wish we had the internet back when I had Mopar fever! Good luck and happy hunting!

Took my driving test in Mom's 1965 Red Dodge Dart. It was a slant six, column shift, but that car would really go! Always loved the look of them. Please bring it back to life!
My mom had a white ‘65 GT with 273 auto, console with the floor shifter, and the black half vinyl top. The car was mint. I took my drivers test in it, and the instructor was all about the car so all I had to do was cruise around. She would giggle when it chirp the tires every time it shifted into second. My dad owned a machine shop then so it was a pretty hot solid lifter 273. It was a donut machine with the 13” Ralleys. You could drift that car like it was on ice. A friend of my dads bought the car and says he will never part with it. Always looking for another one.
My Great Grandfather bought a 1965 Dart GT
Bronze on the bottom & metallic brown on the front half of the roof. We went to visit them, he ask me to go for a ride, he was backing out of the driveway my

When my wife and I met in 74 I was driving a 64 Dart 2 door with the typewriter drive automatic and she a 65 Dart 4 door. We still have that. She bought it in 71 off of a man in her church who was leaving for the mission field. When that awful sliding yoke (Chrysler's idea) gave out I had a custom made drive shaft made by Cannon Engineering in Van Nuys to replace it for less than the parts alone for the original at our shop cost. Has been sitting for several years now but we still hold on to it.

The Darts are so cool, here in Argentina we had that generation but the Darts were named Valiant, Chrysler Valiant, this year in Argentina would be the Valiant III, all of them were sedans with the Slant Six mated to a three on the tree transmission and the GT versions had a floor shifter but with the same three speed manual, very cool cars

Aussie Chrysler VG Valiant (1971) is a US A body and I have a few of them, So many almost identical stampings Im loving seeing this Roadstoration :-)
I had a 1964 Valiant Signet 200 with a 273 and 4-speed. I upgraded the carburetor to a Carter AFB. It had mechanical lifters. I think that the lifters were switched to hydraulic When the 318 "LA" replaced the "poly" head 318.
Had a lot of fun with that car.

Awesome ! My first car was a black 66 Valiant 4 door 273 3 speed 727 Torqueflite suregrip 13 inch rims . Put a set of chains on her and go just about anywhere in the snow. It was a little tank.

First car I ever bought in high school was a 64 Dart. Slant 6 w/3 on the tree. Red and rusted out. Had a blast with it.
Nice find. Back in 1970 I had a 64 Plymouth Valiant 225 slant 6, pulled it out and drop the 273 V8 with 4 speed 373 rear from a Dodge Dart (65) duel point. Great little hot rod and fun to drive even down the drag strip.
Man, if this thing could be cleaned up, have the rust repaired with good sheetmetal, replace the grill, recover the interior, and get everything mechanical in order this would be a seriously awesome old Dart GT to cruise. I would put some 16" slotted mags on it, a full dual exhaust with Flowmasters and long tubes on it, and I'd drive it everywhere.

A-bodies up until 1973 was all the small bolt pattern, and I've had many.

When you had the distributor out, a long flat screw driver with the handle cut off, and a power drill. Oil pressure in hind sight.
You have to remove the distributor gear to do so, which is super difficult to do through the distributor hole.

vfnfiberglass has some body parts for these things, also Summit has a couple complete Floor pans and new quarter panel patches, Stinger Fiberglass it looks like they got a hood....

In the early 70's I had a 64 Dart GT with the 273 v8 and push button automatic shifter on the dash. Being a narrow chassis, the driver side exhaust manifold was special as it had to go uphill to clear the steering box. The v8 was a very tight fit. It was a fun car that I still havs a factory service manual for to reminisce over.
Had a 68 with a 273, screaming engine!
From what I've experienced is a field kept car usually has a lot more rust in the body, but the engine has a better shot of being free providing water hasn't gotten directly in. Long term barn stored ones have less body rust, but the engine is more likely to be stuck.

I have a good hood and fenders for a Dart GT came with all my dads car junk when he passed, big Mopar guy.
I remember those cars when they first came out. I was in high school. They weren't very well sought after back in those days, competing against Chevelles, and Cutlasses, and GTO's and all, But from here, looking back at it, it actually looks pretty cool. Great thing you are saving it.

What a flashback! I bought one in 1971. Red just like that one. There was not a vinyl top on those. That chrome strip was just part of the trim. The original 273 was rated at 235 HP with solid lifters, dual point distributer, and 10.5/1 compression. Ran great on Super Shell. That distributer was a pain to adjust unless you have a dwell meter. If I remember right you set the total dwell not the point gap. It came with a single exhaust and straight through muffler. I don't know why anyone would put a 318 in unless they blew the 273 and that was what they had laying around... The stock 318 had less HP but a little more torque, however that does not sound like a stock 318. I looked at some of these a few years ago and in running condition and decent body they were around 12K. This is one of those cars I wish I never sold.

I wish I knew more about cars because where I live here in southern Kentucky, there are cars and trucks that sat for well over 20 years that I would just love to try to get running again. perfect size car to fix up, maybe restomod and make a sleeper/daily driver out of. A lot of the older cars are too big but this one is a good size for modern life.

Cool ol dart Dylan! My brother had a 65 dart convertible. His had a slant 6 and an auto, yellow with black interior, was a decent car. My buddy from high-school had a 69 formula S barracuda. He hit a curb and bent the suspension. It had a factree 383 and a 727 TQ with fenderwell headers and a holley 850. We bought the car and a k frame n suspension included with a set of gmc typhoon rims and tires...all for 600.00!!! Heck of a deal!!!
I HAD ONE OF THESE WITH THE 4 SPEED MANUAL IN 1974. HAD CROME VALVE COVERS FROM THE FACTORY. IT WAS ORANGE WITH black upholstery. nice shape but paint was faded. i wish i still had it. it would really go.

Dylan you always impress me with the old relics you find and get running and driving. This is a very cool car and definitely deserves a new lease on life. Some license plate patches and tires and off she goes
got a 65 dart 2 door here, i bought it years ago, did not get around to restoring it, it is most there, but i am now disabled and cannot do the work to it. trying to sell it before scrap prices go up. most of the trim is in the back seat and/or trunk. people around here think $200 and take it away on a trailer is too much for it, but to replace the hood would cost that much alone. the hood is in fair condition but in bad need of paint. here in a few weeks, when scrap prices go up, it goes away for $400-$650 for weight. the 170 needs a new crank, and the trans has radiator fluid in it. there is a working speedo and an extra tail light lense. car did not have a rad when i got it, it was on a trailer when it came here.
The heads with the high performance valve springs, and that single plane cast iron intake came on very few engines in the mid 60's. I believe that only the 273 HO, the 318 HO, and the 340 came with that intake. When I say 318 HO, it only came out in the 66 or close year barracuda, which sported a double roller timing chain. It may be possible that the 318 received the upper of the original 273 HO, and I believe that Hurst is stock for that car possibly. I would recommend checking the block numbers to see if it really is a 318, and if it is a true Mopar orange block, it is likely an HO. At one time, I heard that Chrysler did put out some 340's stamped 318 before the gov. made them stamp them accurately, but that could be just rumor. As for the intake, it did not make it past the 60's for favor of the dual plane intake being much more streetable.

I started learning mechanics when I was about 6 years old. My father wasn’t always available to fix a flat tire on my bike. Lefty loosy, righty tighty was the first thing I learned. Fast forward to when I was 19 on the side of the road with a flat on my 67 Fury. Broke two studs before I tried to “tighten” the lug before I “loosened” it😂🤷♂️ my world was shattered. Righty loosy😂

Always a pleasure to watch your videos Dylan. Too bad it doesn't have the original 273, those were good motors as is the 318. I think Chrysler only used 1/4 speed during that time period. Could be close or wide ratio. What are your final drive gears?
That's so amazing how well the ol Darts running...I miss those ol car's cause I grew up with em and it never took alot to keep em goin and its liable to surprise you with how well it performs lol...Good luck with it and I hope you can at least get it back on the road as a daily driver and I'd love to have it cause like I said it didn't take alot to keep em alive...I'm guessing it's 58 years old cause I's born in 59 and it's a 64 or 65 and I'd just love to have it as is...I remember people putting heat and everything trying to get the lug nuts off the drivers side and get all mad cause they didn't know anything about the lug nuts lol...I's 12 years old when I learned about em and my older friends had so much fun watching me trying to get em loose lol...I miss those days cause everything was fun to do especially after I'd finally figure everything out that I wasn't aware of lol...
