Dukes of Hazzard - "Ghost of the General Lee" Roscoe Sad Scene 2

- James Best - a.k.a. "Sheriff Roscoe P. Coletrane" is in my opinion, very underrated as an actor. He is most well known for playing Roscoe as a bumbling idiot, which he did very well. In this touching scene from "Ghost of the General Lee" James Best shows his range as an actor, as he tells Uncle Jesse of the Duke Boys' death.

Two veteran actors making us cry...God given talent...R.I.P.

Seeing Roscoe's sad face and hearing his sincerity almost put me in tears
Ya it’s sa

Almost? This scene had me crying like a baby back in the day :'-(
Me too bro
They wanted to go for the heartstrings and make some drama. So why show Catherine Bachs bod.?
TV shows like this will never come around again. The late 70s and 80s were the Golden Years of TV.
Sadly that is true. Also people get offended by shows like this because of the flag
IMDB APP
@@mikegrey5663 agree with you on that
Absolutely!
Totally agree never see this type of TV shows again
Man just the way he delivered Rosco's line about Bo and Luke's "death" is the most gut wrenching thing, it's when he says "They didn't come up" and Uncle Jesse's expression changes from his usual smiling to a "what" face like he'd just gotten hit by a bomb. You can tell the pain in his voice because he didn't want to break it to him and it killed Rosco on the inside to have to say those words. It's even more so when Jesse goes over to the table and the tears come streaming down his face, then Rosco comes over to console him and it's clear to see that he was fighting back from breaking down as well when talking about his car chases with them and how all of them enjoyed it. You really think they are gone for a second even when it's clear they aren't.
What a gripping scene.
😢😢😢
Being in law enforcement that has to be the hardest part of the job you have to do. Is to notify that a family member passed away in a car accident. And for sheriff roscoe knowing the family on personal level would even harder. Fortunately bo and Luke did not die.
@johnsquire That's what really hits about this scene, and it says something about Rosco's character as an officer of the law, because even if his character is oft portrayed as a bumbling man child who is incompetent much of the time at his job (at least the later seasons, in S1 especially the early episodes it was a different story) but this was such a real moment. Best really nailed the emotion and the feeling of having to deliver that tragic news.
Thankfully no, at least we find out the boys were very much not dead. Though this scene very much gave the appearance of such.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@justinmiddleton8818 I think Rosco liked Bo and Luke and liked chasing them but he was also an officer of the law as you pointed and he had to do his job.Like for example when Boss Hogg was accused of sabotaging Uncle Jesse's car when they raced against each other Rosco did his job and arrested Boss.So there might be lines Rosco wouldn't cross and one of them is murder
Didn't notice the instant tear from Denver Pyle when he was staring off. The tremor in James Best's voice. Perfect acting. One of the all-time underrated true acting casts. The plots were sometimes ridiculous and corny, but the acting was always first rate.
Yes, the actors were often better than the scripts they were given. That's ultimately what made the show work. IMO, the best episodes were the first 5 that were filmed in Georgia.
It’s been said jimmy was such a great actor if he was asked to cry he would say “which eye?”
It's often overlooked by critics of the show how good the acting was. One of the best tv shows ever.
John said that James Best was one of his dearest friends
bfsgman I agree. I still think this was one of the best post georgia episode
When Jesse rests his hand on top of Roscoe's is when you can tell that despite their conflicts they all truly care about each other with none of them wanting to see the others hurt.
albatani27 I think that’s why I love this part so much. Roscoe and Boss Hog were always up to no good against the Dukes but in this scene you could sense genuine feelings and fear between the group. Well written and very very well performed.
You do know this wasn't reality television.
That’s why I hate the remake so much they play em as hating each other
Dave Fontana no it’s called character development
albatani27 yea back then here in the south we might argue and fuss but when one needed the other we would always be their. It’s called southern hospitality
James Best should have gotten a award.never have seen two actors blend and give this news. I cried then and now.
They will never ever have another TV show like this.
supermanguy1214 true this was gold
Good, an old white woman in cut off jeans.
no not these days. Hollyweird just doesn't get it. They tried to make a movie of it, and bungled that all up. They did the same with all the old tv shows they try to make movies of these days. Who ever said Wil Ferrell is funny? He's just weird and stupid, not funny, neither is Ben Stiller, tho with his parentage you'd think he would be. actually he'd be a better dramatic actor, and the few times he's gotten a bit of solid drama to do, he's done it well, but comedy, he just doesn't have it. Not as the funny man, maybe a decent straight man. Now, Will Smith is hilarious. I wish he'd do more movies and not straight drama tho he handles that well too. Why is it those tht are good at comedy usually shine in dramatic roles, while well known dramatic actors can't usually do comedy for ... anything. They ruined starsky and hutch the movie trying to be straight comedy. was junk.
Thank God.
This show caught a lot of criticism but, scenes like this are touching and you can see the genuine goodness in James Best and the others. The show had a good message for kids. I was one of those kids. Thanks for the memories and for posting this special scene!
That's the difference of today's garbage and back then, enimes would come together as family when someone was wrong. Or hurt.
Today's shows everyone dies.
There is never gonna be another 1970s or 1980s and if some how the earth restarts again. I truly want to be about 20 to 25 years old. In 1970
boss hog just wanted there land and never want them dead hell boss ran shine with jesse back in thereprime
well everyone now a days wants reality based tv, in the shows now everyone dies, IRL they do to. We reap what we sow
:30 seconds of silence on prime time television was nearly unheard of .... James , Denver and Sorrel were incredible actors and will be missed .
Duncan D McGrath I remember Sorrell was on a couple episodes of All in the Family
It reminds me of *THAT* episode of M*A*S*H. The one where Radar has to deliver the news that Col. Blake's plane had been shot down with no survivors.
As a boy my Fridays night's belonged to the Dukes of Hazzard and to Dallas . ❤ both of these shows . Wish they had shows as good now days .
The Ghost of General Lee was my favorite episode of the Dukes .
Man Catherine Bach was absolutely beautiful then . Wow !
I had the chance to meet James Best many years, and we chatted for a few minutes. He was a true gentleman.
The emotion that James Best put into this was phenomenal, he made you feel his regret and sorrow
*JAMES BEST DESERVED SO MANY AWARDS OVER THE YEARS FOR HIS ACTING BUT HE WASN'T PART OF "THE ELITE CLUB" OF HOLLYWOOD.*
Even though I knew they weren't dead as I was watching it, this scene did make me tear up
Michael Adkins Me too!
That's because you wonder how many people get the same news and their loved one never comes back....
jpringle1979 me to
Michael Adkins ..all them years ago me too. .made me forget they was ok
Michael Adkins agreed dude, jeezz
Both Denver Pyle (Uncle Jesse) and James Best (Sheriff Roscoe) did their best acting in this sad scene. It makes me want to cry.
"They didnt come up"
I have seen this episode so many times but it still brings a tear to my eye when i see this part.
I remember watching this the first time and, even though I knew Bo and Luke were alive I still cried because I felt the pain Uncle Jesse must've went through hearing those words he hoped never to hear from Rosco or Boss.
Arguably, the part that really hit home was at the end of this scene, where Boss made sure to drag Bo and Luke's good name through the mud by claiming they stole his antique Jefferson Davis gold watch and jeweled chain, Uncle Jesse, fighting back the tears in his eyes while Daisy, Cooter and Rosco comfort him, somberly says "I'm gonna prove they didn't do that if it takes the rest of my days..."
The emotion in James Best's performance was so genuine and heartfelt. Love this show so much. Good wholesome entertainment.
Two great legendary actors, Denver Pyle and James Best. This was the best emotional scene out of the whole series in my opinion.
D J Tanner True.
D J T As well as Actor Sorrell Booke who played Boss Hogg. R. I P.
I saw a movie clip HERE on CZcams it was a civil war clip of a movie with both Denver Pyle and James Best played some soldier Scout role. Does anyone have any idea what movie that is?
May you rest in peace James Best
Yep, James and Denver also acted together before in other projects and were best friends in real life.
An absolutely brilliant scene. This is how you show personal grief. All the cast, particularly James Best and Denver Pyle gave an absolutely acting masterclass 101 here because its so genuine. Superb scene. Well done to all involved here.
Agreed.
I cried when I was 11 years old and I just cried today at 50.
This scene till this day is still a tear jerker.😢😢😢
This is the best moment from both Denver Pyle and James Best.
Both of them veterans of The Andy Griffith Show.
They were both underrated actors from the sixties but this show made them stars
Agree with you on
This scene gets me every time. It's perfectly done. James Best was a great actor and so was Denver Pyle. Ben Jones was spot on as well, with
Cooer's reaction.
I remember that scene very well. Even though I knew that Bo and Luke weren't dead, roscoe performance made me think that they were.
I'm surprised that daisy didn't break down right there because they were so close
They r dead Willie
@@s-k-y. ,No they were not really they just slipped by Roscoe p coletrain just like always this was 2nd time Roscoe got real face , I've always loved this show.

If fact the fishin that day....
I read that in Waylon Jennings voice.
One of a kind show. Had morals, fun, sweet rides, cool chases... in this instance I gotta say, I was born at just the right time! Being a kid, & having this come on at 8:00 Friday, with Waylon playing at the intro... good times!
No police officer worth a damn should ever like giving this notification to the next of kin. A good officer will feel the same pain and loss.
Here, James Best showed that Rosco was still a good cop deep down. Even if he had gone corrupt, deep down, he had a heart. And, he shared in the sorrow that Jesse was feeling. Denver Pyle was brilliant as well. You could see the life go out of him as he realized that Bo and Luke were not coming home (or so everyone thought, of course).
James Best has a Softer Side in him on every Roles he play whether TV or Movies
Very true its one of the hardest moments ever to hear the pain in that person voice I will never forget when we had to do it
Dan Trigona No such thing as a good cop or bad they are cops.
Thank God it was a TV show Captain Obvious
The same as crying at TAPS.
If you don't,check your soul.
James Best would have been 90 years old today (July 26, 2016)
2274brian ..He also played guitar player Jim Linsdsay on the Andy Griffth show.
he should have joined up with the Darlings led by family patriarch Brisco (Denver Pyle)
Wow, I am reading your comment on July 28th 2018 . His birthday was 2 days ago, did not know that was his birthday. I have and will always have the utmost Respect for him and all the others on the Dukes.
Thanks.
James Best would been 93 in July 26, 2019
2274brian kejekekekekeke. Wake up Flash.
James Best is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood history
This scene had me in tears......and the scene right before when Rosco and Enos were in the pond and Enos was pleading for Rosco to help him look for the "bodies".....Rosco was tearful and said "I can't swim." This whole thing made me cry! But it had a good ending! :)
Allison Johnson I remember watching this episode when it aired for the first time. I was 5 and cried my damned eyes out.
awe that's cute, I'm tearing up just reading these comments first time i seen it omg you would think i lost a family member, well in away I did The Dukes of Hazzard were my world back then
Luann Driscoll I think one of the biggest things I miss about back then is the innocence. I did not know of the Confederacy, I didn't know about politics, right wing, leftists, deep state...none of it. All I knew was that on friday nights I got to stay up late and watch these two good ol boys and that big ol flyin' Dodge were heroes to me. The Virginia battle flag he (the general) "wore" was as much a sign of America as anything I'd ever known (remember I was 5 mind you). Now, some nearly 40 years later, I hate Dodge, but the big ol heroic dodge still has meaning to me and there will always be a warm place in my heart for "him". Now that so many here in America consider the virginia battle flag "raycisss", and anybody who flies it a klansmen. I'll be honest, I still believe that there were and still are poor "white trash" families south of the mason dixon line who fly the confederate battle flag. Families who don't have a racist bone in their collective bodies. Families who's southern pride is outweighed only by their love of America. Whew, i'm getting long winded in my old age lol.
If I remember Bo & luke were hiding in nearby bushes watching them look...
@@ROTAXD I read that entire thing u where preaching the entire time and I LOVed it. The General Lee was my favorite movie my Mama even named me after the car. It Lee lol.
James best was awesome. I remember him from the Andy Griffith show... he was an incredible actor..
Denver Pyle was on Andy Griffith Show too
You don't see this no more why? They put their heart into it so much that you could feel it
RIP Rosco!
Packrat Madness He's with Flash now.
And Boss
flash and that sticking bone training called fitch! that was acting! god bless james best! denver pyle aswell! best show ever made ❤❤
Packrat Madness great actor will be missed by all
I genuinely cried so hard during thoes episodes, hands down one if not the best chase be chased shows ever.
im crying as im typing this..a truly touching scene and some great acting
Poor Roscoe, he knew and the boys knew it was all just a game and for fun.. never meant no harm.
What a tearjerker. I’m glad to see I wasn’t the only one that cried during this scene.
One of the BEST t.v. shows ever made and my all time FAVORITE episode. Biggest Dukes fan EVER here.
James Best aka Roscoe P. Coltrain was a superb actor. Very talented man...
This genuinely got me crying :(
I love Uncle Jesse. I wish he was a real man, known by everybody as the character is, and us folks being able to go have a chat with him. I really love the character, I even use his lines and wisdom on my everyday life.
Though Roscoe and boss were corrupt Roscoe still had a heart for the duke boys. He probably enjoy chasing them
I look at it like whilst Roscoe was corrupt he knew how to have fun, he never actually wanted to be serious with the legal system towards the duke boys, to all of them it was a game and here he thinks the game went to far
Back in the 80...Dukes of hazzard was my favorite show...something like this...will never come around again...sure...missed them forever..
james best, was a great actor, he did alot of movies, r.i.p. james.
check him out in Twilight Zone too
This was a good episode. It was one of my favorites.
Recommended in 2019 the best show to ever exists
The sadness in his voice at 1:18, heart wrenching
they left the most important scene to the pros. RIP James and Denver
This was probably Denver and James best acting scene they made it feel so real
All in the body language, delivery of dialogue, plus the more subtle bits like Roscoe sitting right next to Jesse while the latter takes a grasp of his hand. These two actors went above and beyond.
He spoke at my nieces High School graduation. A well spoken man.
Very powerful scence
As corrupt as Rosco can be, he never wants anyone to really get hurt.
This was a good scene, but I would give the best Rosco scene award for his scene in S2 "Grannie Annie," where Boss Hogg is carried off by people planning to kill him. And Rosco PLEADS for Bo and Luke to help save Boss before it's too late.
Yessss!!!
I agree that was James Best at his best
I agree... That should've been an Oscar moment... Maybe it was..Idk...
@John Wymer not only that, Boss was married to Rosco's sister Lulu.....
Even though they are both amazing scenes, for me nothing beats the episode where Flash got kidnapped and Rosco asked the Dukes to help find her back, i cry every time i watch it
James Best was best at acting!!! What a class act he was! Miss shows like this...
thats why I LOVE this show, such legendary actors
even rosco started to cry
Back when people were still human and could empathize even if they were on opposite sides...
I agree, watching this show at least thirty-seven to thirty-eight years after they rapped production, I still become startled and down right surprised when it comes to death. It took me five years after I began to watch The Dukes of Hazzard in '06 or '07 to realize that Sorrell Brooke has passed, Denver Pyle was gone and well James wasn't gone yet, but even then it took me another couple years to even discover that James Best had died. Damn shame he isn't alive he would have turned 90 a while ago and Denver would be 96 I belief. I would have liked to see them both in their elderly years next to Brooke, they died so long ago it feels like it never happened through The Dukes of Hazzard.
que actuacion increible del tio yessi que teleserie increible inolvidable
Just watching uncle jesse's face turn to disbelief made me shed a tear.
I’m glad I missed that episode as a kid. Because I can’t keep my eyes dry now after seeing it! Damn!
You left out the part where Hogg says the boys stole his watch and chain, and then Jesse is like "I'm gonna prove that they didn't do that if it takes the rest of my days." Favorite part
I met Sorrel many many years ago I was at South of the Border buying fireworks June 1979 he was signing autographs at a mobile leather shop trailer there was this beautiful old chevy truck parked near them I only assume it was his. He drew a small crowd in front of that trailer we were all asking him questions. He stated he had nearby relatives and in Florida as well. I think he was born in Georgia if my memory serves me right. He is also not that fat in real life that was a fat suit he always wore and he said it was hot as hell the reason they didn't have to help him sweat in most of the scenes. He said toward the end of the series then in the late 70's that he couldn't stand being in the fat suit more than a few minutes at a time which greatly limited the scenes he was in.
What a sad scene. Uncle Jesse & roscoe tearing up got me.
I love how there is a mutual kind of condoling here between Uncle jesse and Roscoe one through words and the other by a simple hand gesture letting him know he doesnt blame him
I think this one scene highlights the talent of the actors, but also told the story of how closes "Hazard County" was suppose to be.
all in heaven now.. rosco and jessee and boss
san379 & Flash, & Lulu & Mrs Tisdale...
@@ROTAXD And sir Waylon Jennings too.
James best was in alot of tv westerns in the 60s
FANTASTIC!!! Moved to tears here!!! Between this and the "Duke Boys" in the pond before it... Fine actors, James Best is great... I've had the priviledge of meeting Ben Jones (Cooter), a fine actor himself!!!
Choked me up as a kid & still chokes me up.
So true. T.V shows like this will never come out again. Duke's is all time favorites. I got my son watching now. At the age of 2 and half. I bought all seasons of dvd when they stopped playing it on air.
Long live the general lee
I loved this show as a kid. I never saw this episode...but holy hell can James Best kick you in the feels.
oh yeah the ghost of general lee man i never laughed my ass off at this episode more than any other . my grandparents and i always waited for this show to come on . James Best really was a damn good actor.
Nothing is ever going to come around like in the old days, that's when shows we're good 👍 to watch, com-on.
This is a good show good country show
This part of this episode was so perfectly put together. It reminds me of the part of an episode of MASH. The part where Radar walks into the OR and tells everyone that Henry Blake is dead
None of the cast except for Radar and Blake I think knew the ending ahead of time. The shock from the actors was genuine.
I actually remember hearing someone, I think it was one of the actors during a special reunion or something of that nature, state that the sound of the medical instrument that was dropped during that scene was someone off set dropping something during the recording due to the shock of Radar's line and they decided to keep it in cause of how well it fit into the scene.
H
And that there folks was why Denver Pyle and James Best were legends of their craft
James Best and Sorrell Booke really made the Dukes of Hazzard one of the best shows. The Two most loveable villains !!!
I was a die hard dukes of hazard fan growing up...Damn I miss this show.
This is one of the best performances James Best gave in the series.
It’s crazy, it’s like your heart breaks when Uncle Jesses heart breaks.
for a moment that was some real acting..
man I love this show this one little clip almost made me cry
I saw this once, when it aired, but remember it like it was yesterday. It was television that stuck with you. They'd built up the characters so well by this point in the series that a moment like this had tremendous weight.
Wow - incredible acting all around. James Best is fantastic. His humanity cones through!
that tore me up, right there!
Always does that to me...and i know how it ended...
TheFarmerfitz yup.. same here.
To day am was in the Rosco's museum in nashville Tennessee,, bring me back memories 😀
Great show and one of the saddest scenes.
good ol days
YOU CUT THE BEST PART FROM IT. When uncle Jessie says I’ll prove they didn’t do that. Even if it takes the rest of my days. I get chills every time.
James best always gave the best performance when he cried on the show your heart broke cause you believed he was truly saddened R.I.P. James.
I always get misty-eyed watching that scene. Great acting, hitting all the emotional strings.
Gives me goose bumps! So many memories with the dukes!
I miss watching the dukes of hazzard tv series
The Dukes Of Hazzard was a cheesy and very 80s, family friendly show about small town hijinks and corruption. It was goofy, over the top and often more comedy than anything.
However, they were also good at remembering to keep the characters human, to never make Boss Hogg or Roscoe truly "evil" or vicious, and to give both sides flaws and virtues. Roscoe was a corrupt cop, but mostly because he was a bit greedy. He was also a human being that never truly wanted to hurt anyone. He cared about Hogg and even the Dukes, and while he may try to trick them into being locked up, it was usually just to milk a fine out of them. And as stated, he sometimes enjoyed the chase....a bunch of grown kids playing tag in the backroads. This moment shows that he was still able to do his job with empathy and conviction, even to someone who was at times an enemy.
Remembering to make people human was a hallmark of shows like this, and the reason they worked...and why so many fail to make them work again.
That scene was so well done. I am bawling my eyes out right now
At least one tear came out of my eyes 🥺.
The hands on treatment of each other. Uncle Jesse on Roscoe, Daisy and Cooter on Uncle Jesse and each other... There is nothing more valuable in this world than the people you love, care for and respect. Nothing. And any one of us can be taken away from the others without a moment's notice. Don't ever forget that.
He was actually my favourite on the show. Loved that "Are You Kiddin' Me!" line he made so much and the "Good News, Boss!" one also. And other lines he made that I can't describe but all these made him so funny it had me in stitches when I watched this show! Thanks for posting it.

Ones I remember the most are, that makes my liver quiver, there's a flaw in the slaw, and goody goody gumdrops.
I was fortunate enough to get to meet James Best. He seemed very genuine, and humble.
i spent my childhood glued to the tv when this came on,i remember the episode like i saw it last night and part 2 "ghost of the general lee"
I think watching uncle Jesse's smile fade is the hardest part
Everytime I watch this it opens up the flood gates I tell you what. Even knowing that the boys are fine and alive. What amazing acting. Could never find such emotion in the delivery nowadays
