Dukes of Hazzard - "Ghost of the General Lee" Roscoe Sad Scene 1

- James Best - a.k.a. "Sheriff Roscoe P. Coletrane" is in my opinion, very underrated as an actor. He is most well known for playing Roscoe as a bumbling idiot, which he did very well. In this touching scene from "Ghost of the General Lee" James Best shows his range as an actor, as he reacts to what he thinks is the death of Bo and Luke Duke.

The emotion the both of them shown in this scene was amazing. Usually they would say something that would make us laugh even though it wasn't meant to be funny but when a rare moment like this comes up and they get to show another emotion that is heartbreaking, it's powerful.
Except maybe that Rosco says he can't swim.
M?
Lp. In. ....
"I can't Enos I can't swim" is one of the most memorable lines from TV in the era perfectly delivered
I grew up watching the dukes and love every single series
Yeah, one of the best things about this show is that, even though they were officially enemies in most cases, Rosco/ Boss and the Dukes still cared about each other deep down. I mean, whenever the Dukes caused Rosco to crash, they'd always stop to make sure he was ok before driving off, and the one time they thought he wasn't, they looked all over for him. It would be even harder for Enos, though, he was friends with Bo and Luke since they were kids.
I bet that charger still sitting at the bottom of the lake.
nope the car was recovered shortly after filming for the wildlife etc
Oh
Cooter fixed it up good as new...
James Best was a tremendous actor. He did dozens of shows and made hundreds of appearances, including many serious roles, before he did The Dukes. His performance in this scene characterizes just how good he was.
James best was such a good actor, you could really hear him convey the hitching and fear in Rosco's voice
You could hear the fear in Roscoe's voice when he said "the Duke Boy's done gone in the pond!" Enos crying gets me every time. This show was really great. Too bad people just don't want to enjoy it anymore. ...I still do!
20yrs old and i enjoy watching this ,it brought a tear to my eye and im not ashamed to admit it
James Best damn good actor. r.I.p.
James Best was a phenomenal actor and this scene is one of the reasons
I'm a Dukes fan but I never saw this episode until now and I watched when Rosco told Jesse they went in before this part and not even the sight of Daisy could cheer me up. I'm good now!
i cried when i saw this scene, but then i saw them in the weeds, i love bo and luke!
i can't remember this episode, the last time i watched it was 3 years ago
That’s not them in the reeds, they were skinny dipping with their clothes in the car when two guys stole the General Lee, the guys in the reeds are the ones who stole the car.
This episode was brilliantly written, one of the best post georgia filming
Look, say what you want about the Dukes of Hazzard this show was great. The stories were fantastic. The narration by Waylon Jennings. He was terrific. I know nowadays this show would never be aired because of " racial " tones but there was no Kkk reference no misuse of the Word ( you know). And the car is in a stratosphere by itself!! The General Lee. Face it there were people who actually lived like that.. they had values. They had family. They were not rich in monetary status but happy with what they had!!!!
Well said
if it wasnt for the paint scheme on the car, nobody would ever bitch, the show never once attacked people of color or promoted a racist ideology
I think it would air today. It would definitely get flak at first, but once people watched it they’d get over it and know they’re not racist assholes. I feel like this show was mocking those people because they’re the exact opposite
It’s sad because those people in the fucking minority the ones who would bitch about this a.k.a. the fascist twitter snowflake Libtards probably wouldn’t even watch the show at all they would just see the confederate flag and have a complete mental meltdown even though the symbolism of the flag in the show doesn’t represent racism at all.
Nobody cared when it originally aired and when it went into syndication either. The only reason the pantie waste executives from CMT and others pulled it cause of that little bastard that shot those black church members in Charleston, SC years ago and a picture of him surfaced of him holding a Confederate flag in his hand and everyone one lost it! How pathetic our society has become. This show was never racist by any means. The Confedrate flag was the flag of the Confederacy long before slaves ever showed up here. It isn't a flag of slavery. Total BS!!
Even though Roscoe was at odds with the Dukes, they were still good ol boys, and thinking they were gone, really hit him hard. He even told Uncle Jesse he never would have hurt them. Roscoe might have been a power hungry sheriff, but he was still a man with heart.
I miss tele like this
This scene wasn't in the script for this episode. The scene called for Rosco and Enos to go to the edge of the pond and Enos says "Poor Bo, Poor Luke" end of scene according to the script. Sonny Shroyer argued with the director to do this scene the way you see here, after about 30 min. they let him jump in and get the clothes out and ad lib it. Really made this scene.
Roscoe really put a lot emotion into his part. It seems so genuine.
@@studinthemaking It really says a lot about his fundamental nature and shows that for all his corrupt use of his authority he's a decent human being at heart. He didn't actually want them Duke boys to get HURT.
Enos is such a sweetheart
I'm 24 guys I grew up watching the Duke's of Hazzard this show needs to air again
James Best had actually attended one of the nation's top acting schools and also sidelined as an acting coach. He did an amazing job as Roscoe. This scene always makes me cry. Roscoe's admission that he can't swim and Enos' desperation are utterly moving. (Sonny also did an amazing job as Enos!)
he gets me every time he says "the Duke boys done gone in the pond". Amazing voice crack.
Megs Alternate Email wow thanks for that fact.i think Roscoe besides the general was the other main star of this show and.your right this scene very moving the part where Roscoe's like "why'd you boys have to go on and do that" I lost it great acting
James Best always told a story about someone wanting a tear from him and his response was "which eye".
Jàmeswasverygood
I've seen him on a couple westerns, including Gunsmoke
James Best was an amazing actor.
Amen to that.
James Was Truly The Greatest,.....
Yes he was
Daisy shoulda been the one skinnydipping
this is one of my favourite episodes
I miss the show
I still Like the one where he cries Cause Boss is Kidnapped to be Killed!
Granny Annie is the episode
every viewer of the dukes.of hazzard like see boss hogg to be killed because the way he mistreats enos strate😠
I love this show so much...😊😊😊❤❤❤😊😊😊❤❤❤
I never really thought about it before but James Best was a great actor. I seen him do appearances on shows like "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Rawhide" before the role that made him famous. I really would have liked to seen him brach out and do a few movies.
Michael Marburger - He was in Ode to Billy Joe
Yep had anal sex with Robbie Benson if I recall . also a thug in the "Rifleman " tv show
The hardest part is watching enos cry
roscoe always did like those duke boys
You could tell he absolutely lived for their rivalry and wanted to show them up and get the better of them, but didn't mean them any actual harm. They were best frenemies.
Honestly a very touching scene. Well done.
I love that at the end it cut to a short clip. “Ain’t nobody dyin”
james best does an amazing act right here!😊❤
He's the most selfless character and that's why I think he's the most beloved character. If there was anyone who couldn't love Rosco, well there was something wrong with 'em. What do you expect it is that the Dukes, or even Boss can't stay mad at him for long?
That is actually a good point about Rosco being selfless, I hadn't thought of that before. Even when doing villainous acts, it was pretty much always out of his loyalty to Boss rather than out of self- interest.
He was a loyal henchman but he wasn't mean about it. He did Boss's dirty work and took glee in his rivalry with the Dukes but he never wished them actual harm. A genuinely likable 'villain' character - at the end of the day you knew he was as much about the spirit of the game as he was about Boss's latest greedy scheme. And when something like this happened, it was his nightmare.
Man, that was good emoting right there, I remember this scene and this show, Best is the best, no doubt about it.
He made this part so believe. and well tell Jesse's reaction was priceless what enoz ask for help
I like the Dukes of Hazzard tv
The Duke boys would had clear that pond , touching take James Best GREAT ACTING RIP .
Olden Day Good
yes he was great actor is missed very much
He tries to act like he doesn't care. But it's through his childish persona you get a feeling that he is truly a caring man. He can drive hope into people just by joking about a situation no matter how bad it is. When Rosco's around you don't see a careless heartless person. He gives people hope and brightens their day.
I
"Just because you are Bad Guy doesn't mean you are bad guy."
mine too. i got the first two season off of itunes. i love the ghost scene in this episode.
Saddest moment in tv history
in case yall forgot ain't nobody died
The general
It didn't cooter brought it back to life lol also the baladeer said that (Waylon Jennings) also its weird to think I was 13 or 14 when I made this comment now im 23
@@n00bcak35 wow! time flies i wish i could find old comments i posted
love the gutair music in this scene
Good acting from James Best (Rosco). I wish there had been more scenes that showed more depth to his charecter like in this episode. There is also the Granny Annie episode and Opening Night at the Boars Nest. but they don't come close to this. Depressing moments in DOH were hard to come by. Thats why there's fan fiction. :)
Amen i love James best God rest his soul Love u Roscoe
Watching this the night it originally aired teared us up we thought they where gone
even they get chase by each other they both always look out for each other/ roscoe/ Bo and Luke in this scene this and the one that boss hugg got kidnaped got me the most in those sad scenes anyone else get that feeling to?
The term is "jump the shark" and it came from "Laverne and Shirley/Happy Days" when Fonzie was dared to jump over a shark enclosure. The stories started going downhill from there & now refers to the high water mark of a tv series.
As lowdown as Rosco was he didn't want anything to happen to Bo and Luke
watch the whole episode it's great and by the way it wasn't them in the weeds
littlewolf223 - thank you, I couldn't remember if it was them or someone else.
This is my favorite too, it is one of the most touching shows.
@Feathergreencp At least in this episode "The General" was probebly salvaged intact from the pond and Ok to be rebuit and used in other episodes :)
Must have watched that movie like 450+ times lol.
I cried like a little baby that night.
R.I.P. BOYS
the original idea sas a film called moonrunners virtually all the main characters names were transferred to the dukes of hazzard.
General Lee was destroyed. There is a General Lee in town here the guy had it painted and its a bad ass ride
Me too i LOVE it
yes
Jamest best had range. This shows it
some good acting..
1:51 I Liked How The Duke Boys Faked Their Own Deaths.
At the time they should this episode who would have though they missed a jump. they normally made dozens of times before.
Yeah,I agree they made safe clean Jumps many times before this.
Nooooo!!! The fucking charger!!!! Fuck the shirts!!!
ZillaPlayz I'm gonna go with the....
1970 Plymouth roadrunner superbird
@ZillaPlayz in my opinion, Lamborghinis or any luxury car is garbage, cars nowadays don't have character build into them, today it's like this :Frame, motor, computer, plastic, body=done
Yes someone who understands me
One thing I saw in this episode: Surely if General Lee went into a pond, all the electrics and the battery would be shot? :P
I loved Rosco's line: "But batteries die Boss, so why not cars?" XD
I loved this show. We grew up with the Duke boys, Daisy, and Uncle Jesse. They were kind of naughty, had family value though
is this the tipton swamp cooter was talking about in the movie?
@lcrs5050 actually is wasn't them in the weeds. in the episode Bo and Luke were skinny dipping, why Enus found pants and a shirt, at another pond and the general was stolen by some robbers coming through hazzard.
Alot of chargers junk yard heaven 😇🙏/ love ❤the dukes 4 life
0;14 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Does anyone know of a good site for DOH sound files? I need some Roscoe files!
boss hogg acted funny to hearing of bo and lukes "death" in this episode but acted normal again later on.
1:13 Crashed so hard it knocked their shirt and breeches off.
Enos dove right in, no hesitation.
No,someone stole the General Lee
I knew no one died!!!
Roscoe accidentally causes Bo and Luke Duke to drive their General Lee into pond.
@Feathergreencp they where only 10 or so years old at that point the show was done well before 1989 at that time they where just old cars.
@Astraldragon1 , I ment "Showed" ^
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Where’s the rest of the clip? Ugh
what happen to the General Lee that jumped into the pond or lake was it recovered or left there
@dukecousins01 It's actually spelled Coltrane, but I knew who you were talking about!
what season and epi. was this?
@WHITEDUIF that was the movie "dukes of hazzard: the beginning" the stuff from both movies never happened in the tv series
Wat's episode is this?

@scott93257 yes it was he had me crying.

@fire98boy Sounded like damn to me.
How are they alive?
@watuphomi But back then, a 1969 Dodge Charger was 20 years old, almost a classic, and yet they STILL trash it
The General Lee is hidden they won't let Nooooooo get to that General Lee car. I say I can't blame them
It’s still re
I Have the Series on DVD
