Beta precons will be the best way for new players to break in, and that product is reasonably priced. I think the combination of Alpha and Beta print runs, there is plenty of cards printed and the current state of the game with active players is extremely small.

    • @iopentcgs
      @iopentcgs  Pƙed 3 měsĂci +3

Playable elites are already starting to dry up on TCGplayer and playable uniques will be very expensive. The idea that you can sell a game to a new player via starter decks and then they can only play with half the cards is not tenable. Having a good entry point doesn't matter much when there is no great avenue after that. Unless you are One Piece and you have all the hype, marketing, and IP to feed the furnace.
You are correct that the active players is extremely small, and you are right that if it remains pretty small then there might not be an issue. Seems like you can a few other comments are totally fine with a small game being small. My point is that it's worrisome for the future. You can't keep making a TCG that can't attract new players.

@@iopentcgs I totally agree if this was a well supported LGS game but it is not. The game is definitely a casual experience. So player base is small.
I also think discord and in-person will be the way to get cards. The game isn't big enough to encourage a large sale of singles.

Hate to say it, but Beta precons will shoot to the moon too. Once people realize that precons come with a booster pack, and that an Alpha booster costs the same as the Beta precon box

I think their core audience has bought the cards and boxes. I think this is an older guy’s game. I think this will cause people to buy the next set if they want to get in. We also don’t know their reprint policy other than probably no reprinting art I’m thinking. I’d still rather buy 36 packs of this for $300 over a new magic collectors 12 pack box for about the same price.

*Edit* Just rewatched the video. Any chance you will post a video of your uniques binder?
My 2 cents, we will see a continuation of the stagnant community. Some will enter using cheap cards, but honestly, it was a slow trickle even with TC with boxes. I think the hardcore community + strong gameplay will build hype for the game.
I am pretty convinced that people who get into this game will stay, and over the long haul it will grow. People will start to foam at the mouth for the next single release per year. It will become an event in the TCG space unlike any other TCG.
Also, I loved seeing your collection! That is amazing! I didn’t see a Pathfinder, did you get one?
I went the singles route after opening 3 boxes. I only have 21% of the foils set and was 2 from having the complete power nine. Got my Mirror Realm days before the sell out on TC. Wanted to buy more boxes, but every time i kept thinking
a box, or guaranteed foils I want
. I was convinced once I opened the 3rd box and it was ordinary and exceptional foils only, hahah

Having starters is good, but having the only path for a new player to be starters -> expensive singles for 6 months is very bad for a game that already lacks marketing. Stores already didn’t push Sorcery or starters because they didn’t have product to sell. Now it’a worse since the wait to AL is 6 months.

Box breaks are definitely part of how you get the art in front of people. Even in my small time doing Sorcery breaks on Whatnot, there is also new people coming in intrigued by the art. Then they realize that no store in a 3 hour radius has a game night for it and now they can't even buy a box from TC. Indirect marketing was already super limited, and now it's pretty much dead for 6 months.

@@WonOneWun Sorcery boxes have a very big variance. They are extremely clumpy. But when you open in mass, the EV for a box was very high. During the first few months, there were at least 25 uniques that were worth $5+. Sorcery also had a lot of set collectors that wanted foils, so there were many foils that were also easily sold. The market now is very very different compared to the first few months though. Even before the boxes ran out.

had a Onyx core, highland princess, king of the realm, star seed of Uhr, and Midland Army, all foil. Same box had an aquamarine core, and a highland princess, both non-foil

So when all the boxes get averaged there is still a lot of value, but you need to either be luxky like me, or buy a lot and sell a lot.
The estimated value for a Beta box even at the lowest was like $205
STILL higher than MSRP, but you would need to sell a lot of the “bulk”, so selling opening and selling in quantity is really important and Very time consuming.

New players can buy cheap singles online. This is a casual kitchen table game. New players dont need a pstone and earthquakes in their deck. Plenty of grapple shots, buries, and fiebolts are available for pennies. Same for pudge butchers, kobolds, and summoning spheres. These cards make the core of strong and fun decks, and bring far more impact to the table than the uniques you're crying about. The entire point of the video is that even though Sorcery is tactical, grounded, mature, fun, amazing, beautiful...it doesn't matter if there is no supply or no reason for people to get into the game for 8 months out of a year. Seems like most people arguments are "welp just wait".
