    *Tip for dovetail router bits:* They're often a bit fragile because of the forces of the wide cutting edge versus the thinner neck, so do your first pass(es) with a straight bit to hog out material from the centre of the channel, then a second round with the dovetail bit to finish the sides. The bit is less likely to snap, AND the cutting edge will stay sharp much longer 😉

    • @djamelhamdia134
      @djamelhamdia134 Před 4 měsíci +1

      That's really clever!

    • @jewdd1989
      @jewdd1989 Před 4 měsíci +3

      Yep that’s the best way of preserving your dovetail bit and safety of it not snapping and being flung at you

    • @PikkaBird
      @PikkaBird Před 4 měsíci +3

      Also, it helps the process feel smoother. Going full hog with the dovetail bit right off the bat will make the router have to work extra hard and as a result you also have to hold it more strongly to stay the course. You'll reduce the risk of the piece jerking to the side, rocking (and hence lifting it off the bit) and other mishaps. As with every other cut you'll want your finishing cut to remove as little material as reasonably possible. You'll also get a smoother surface with minimal chipping this way.

    • @sdoc3
      @sdoc3 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Very valid tip, and that goes for everything on the router, really. Even if it is totally capable of taking off everything in a single pass, doesnt mean you should.

      @@iamuzairahmad Do you think that for _every_ couple you see doing projects together? I think it would be extremely weird if _all_ the work on every house/apartment should be done by just one of the people, in case they're not gonna stick together.

      @iamuzairahmad Před 4 měsíci

      @@PikkaBird usually the couples I see are not CZcamsrs doing a whole apartment renovation on their own (they renovate by paid workers). Secondly, I am from Pakistan where living together without marriage is not a common practice. So, I think my say on this is not general rather specific to this case only.

    Regarding the broken bit in the beginning, I've always used as cheap a bit as I can get away with, so to counter that tendency to overload it, I first make a couple of measured passes on the tablesaw and hog out a good bit of the material that way first.
    The kerfs left by the blade mean the router bit has a lot less work to do, refining the profile of the cut instead of forcing its way through all that material.
    Plus, it leaves channels in the wood for the dust to go and not heat up around the bit, potentially softening the metal.
    AND it keeps the bit going in a straight line a lot easier, following the path of least resistance left by the saw blade.
