- A playthrough of TTI's 1992 license-based platformer for the TurboGrafx-16, Darkwing Duck.
Played through on the normal difficulty level.
Steelbeak is building a new superweapon to take over St. Canard, and Darkwing Duck is once again poised to become the ingrown toenail in the foot of crime. Tuskernini, Moliarty, and Megavolt have each been seen studying a stolen painting that holds the secret to Steelbeak's plan, so Darkwing sets off to find the pieces of the painting.
You can take on the henchman in any order you like. Tuskernini's stage begins on the streets and leads into the sewers, Megavolt's takes place on the rooftops, and Moliarty's is set underground, and the object of each stage is to find the puzzle pieces and to take down the boss. Once they're beaten, you'll put together the puzzle pieces and make your way to Steelbeak's hideout for the final battle against the superweapon.
The action is your typical platformer fare. You defeat enemies by shooting at them with your gas gun or by butt-bouncing off of their heads, and the levels are straightforward gauntlets of obstacles with occasional branching paths tossed in to shake things up.
Darkwing Duck was created by Interactive Designs, the same folks behind the TurboGrafx-16's take on TaleSpin ( • TaleSpin (TurboGrafx-1... ), and the two games are very similar, but Darkwing Duck turned out much better. The controls, though delayed, floaty, and imprecise, usually respond to your inputs, and the improved collision detection makes it a far less frustrating game to play than TaleSpin was. The animation is choppy and there's not much variety in the backdrops, but the graphics put on a decent show and look more professionally done than TaleSpin's. The music, on the other hand, sucks. The small handful of tracks repeat over and over, and that droning organ really wears on the nerves after awhile.
Darkwing Duck is unquestionably the better of the TurboGrafx's two Disney games, but that neither disguises nor excuses its stank. The overall quality leaves a lot to be desired. If you're itching for a good Darkwing Duck game, do yourself a favor and pick up Capcom's excellent NES game ( • Darkwing Duck (NES) Pl... ) instead.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
I wanted to give you props for the well-written descriptions of the games. I always enjoy reading them as much as the videos.
Thank you! :)
AVGN: Get up there. Get UP there! GET THE FUCK UP THERE!
😂😂😂 I remember that one!!
The NES version may not be flawless but it's a masterpiece compared to this!
it's flawless, actually. perfect for NES.
Just goes to show how the quality of a game is much more important than the strength of the hardware it runs on, huh?
Darkwing Duck is better than the TaleSpin game, but let's not kid ourselves. It's still terrible.
I have this feeling, that the NES version of DARKWING DUCK is much better 😺👍🕹️ than the TurboGrafx-16 version 😹🕹️.
Awful
Y la versión de nes?
So much wasted potential
A versão do NES é muito melhor que essa versão do Turbo Grafx!
I had this Disney cartoon tie-in for my NES back in the early 1990's.
And to be honest, it was one of the most brilliant Disney games, since DUCKTALES 😺👍🕹️.
If this was a movie, it would be on Red Letter Media's Wheel of the Worst.
Ngl I feel like the best way to describe Darkwing Duck is a “poor man’s version of Mega Man with difficulty that is too high in contrast to the enjoyment of the gameplay.”
as a person who played DWD before MegaMan, it's vice versa. MegaMan is a poor man noname franchise without any story, made up villains, mostly bad music (except MM2)... While DWD has everything, especially cool music, cool stages, is extremely polished and pleasant to play.
Are you referring to the NES version? Because while it's definitely a Megaman clone, it's a damn good one and a top ten NES game in my book. I didn't think it was hard because I loved and played all of the Megaman games as a kid though.
@@jasonbrewer8477 It’s the TurboGrafx-16 version I’m talking about in case you were wondering!
I thought you were referring to that version, I never got to try it and didn't want to after seeing the AVGN video on it 😆 Cheers mate!
I remembered the AVGN did a video on this.
"If you're itching a good Darkwing Duck game, do yourself a favor and pick up Capcom's excellent NES game instead."
That I already have, through the Disney Afternoon Collection on Steam.
They did Darkwing dirty in this game.
Incredible how in this case a turbograft game could be worst than a nintendo game
I remember this version because of the infamous AVGN episode.
Man, you made this look easy.
Jeez. No wonder Quackerjack hates video games so much. As much of a Darkwing Superfan I am, I am glad I never had a TurboGraphix. Otherwise I would have been stuck with this abomination.
The graphics looks so good. When I was a kid I saw the pictures of this game and I was 🤩. What happened in the development of this game?
"Let's get dangerous!"
💜💜🖤🖤💜💜
yup this game is better then talespin but still lacks the fun of some of the better disney games.
4:38 That D the AVGN spent half his video trying to get is totally easy, he just didn't know how to double jump!
Haha yeah. It tells you in the manual that you can bounce off of stuff by holding down mid-jump. It works the same as Mickey's bounce in Castle of Illusion.
Fun fact the boss music is stolen from tale spin that shows how much effort they put in to this game
nice darkwing nes turbografx
Just don’t stay on the stage for too long trust me if you do a safe will drop on you killing you instantly!
Gaming Historian briefly covered this game in his "Mega Man on MS-DOS" video. It's worth a look.
I think I'd take any of the MM Dos games over this.
For all this game's faults, the parallax at 1:37 is great
Maybe it's not terrible, just mediocre, but compared even to the NES game... yeah, that's an easy choice.
This brings me back to my younger years! Any chance of a Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow playthrough?
This game is only 22 min long.
Was AVGN right about this game? The input lag, difficult to double jump?
or did he over exaggerated it to make a funny video?
He always exaggerates to make the video funnier, not that I find most of them funny either way. Glitches and Big Rigs are the only two I ever enjoyed.
I actually enjoyed difficult platformers like this back when they were relevent. I loved Bubsy. I know I'm weird
I didnt even know there was such thing as a bad TurboGrafx game, given it didnt have as much third party support as the SNES or the Genesis
There might've been average, mediocre ones at worst, but never this bad. You have to play this to know how terrible it is
Interactive Designs might have to have been one of the least competent western developers at the time; This and both TaleSpin games are prime examples of just how lazy they were; heck, they literally re-used the boss theme from TaleSpin here. They couldn't take full advantage of SEGA or NEC's consoles to deliver a quality experience that could rival some Japanese developed titles at the time.
Neutopia 2? Full playthrough
Huh. I always hear Talespin is better.
NES version is better than this one.😢
Ducktales was better
This game and TaleSpin really show how a bunch of incompetent, western developers couldn't take full advantage of the PC Engine's hardware capabilities
Was it Western Developers ? I remember back in the day whenever a game wasn’t made in Japan , usually it sucked .
