  • This video references an interview which was conducted with Pino Pischetola, who was a recording engineer on Depeche Mode's 1990 'Violator' Album. Pino mentioned that Dave Gahan's vocals were recorded using an inexpensive Shure 5m57 Dynamic microphone.

Great video that proves it’s always about the artistic talent of the performer and not the gear. The Beatles built their foundational catalogue on a four-track tape recorder… crazy.

Elliott Smiths first few albums also used the Sm57 - Sm58 for all instruments and vocals .

The SM-57 and SM-58 are the same mic. The difference is the grill and whatever minute impact the grill has on the SM-58.
    From Shure’s own website:
The 57 and 58 microphones are actually based on the same cartridge design. The main difference is in the grille. The SM58 was designed for vocal applications, and therefore uses a ball grille with built in pop filter to eliminate plosives. The SM57 is designed as an instrument microphone, where a smaller grille size is more practical and plosives are less of a concern. Subsequently, the SM57 does not use a ball grille with pop filtering and instead features an integral resonator/grille assembly, where the grille is actually part of the cartridge.

This info definitely blew my mind. I bet they had great mic preamps and engineers to make the final product great.

Thank you so much Vaughn for this encore presentation (I really learned a lot), also I do remember the Violator album as a kid because me and my siblings used to listen 🎶 to (now I know).. talk about using a microphone 🎤 that doesn't cost a lot of money and I bet it works (I wonder if used it on the road [tour])?... anyway that's all for now thanks again 😀 ❤️.

Dynamic microphones are very good for vocals, especially for strong voice, you dont need much compression and eq, in many cases only some reverb is needed for good mixing. I used various AKG mics.

Björk's preferred studio microphone is an SM58 which is the same as an SM57, the only difference is the grill design which positions the diaphragm in different acoustic environment. The SM57 provides a slightly higher output power above
5 kHz. The SM57 and SM58 are excellent for vocals on pop music as you almost always high-pass the vocals above 100 hz and boost the treble a bit around 5-6 kHz, which is the natural frequency response of the The SM57 and SM58. I own a Neumann U47 (VF14 Tube), I still use an EV RE-20 or other cheaper mics for some recordings.

Elliott Smiths first few albums also used the Sm57 - Sm58 for all instruments and vocals . It's a great mic , if your room is untreated it's the go to mic ( as it won't pick up wall reflections etc ) .

I have been producing music since 1992. Back in those early days we would use SM57’s for vocals live to help cut down the spill and feedback. DM used these mic’s live in Hamburg Germany too, so it’s not surprising in that respect, however Violator should have used expensive condenser mic’s. At least I would have assumed until now.

Anyone interested in buying a Neumann U87? :/
Annie Lennox sang Sweet dreams into a SM57 or 58 I think. It says so much about the importance of performance and that what gear you have matters less, and especially these days. I had no idea Gahans vocals on Violator was recorded this way and I would never have thought it had been. Quite amazing really.

Dave and many 80s bands used SM57 mics for live vocals. Not odd. In the studio, that's more unusual.

Use of the Shure SM57 in professional music production is far from rare; it's a standard. From Shure: "the Unidyne III - the engine of the SM58, SM57, 545, and 565. Before the Unidyne III, all Shure unidirectional microphones were utilized by speaking into the side. The 545 Unidyne III was the first Shure unidirectional model where the user spoke into the end of the microphone." From Wikipedia: "Notable singers known to have recorded vocals with an SM57 include Anthony Kiedis, Brandon Flowers, Madonna, David Bowie, John Lennon, Jack White, Bjork, Peter Gabriel, Paul Rodgers, Tom Waits, Wayne Coyne, Tom PettyAlice Cooper, Erykah Badu, Caleb Followill and Raphael Saadiq." And many more.

Peter Gabriel’s used an Sm57 on plenty of tracks. I like it too. The two mics are much the same except for the housing - which affects the curve. I find it easier to control a lower male vocal with it - and to not get all the room noise you get with polar condensers - especially if you put a bit of vocal power into it. Plus it’s more what you’re used to performing on stage with - so it can put you in the zone more, without the self consciousness of a booth. A relaxed artist on a 57/58 or Beta is often better than one hearing all of his or her own breaths on a super sensitive condenser!

I'm also a fan of Shure (sm57/58/7B) and dynamic mics in general (esp. Sennheiser MD431-e840-e935), because they just sound more mix ready and simply great. No need to process vocals much. Overcomplicating things just make things more complicated and what you should aim for is relax and make music, ideas, like you pointed out. That's far more important than any gear. Even worse, people these days discuss various DAWs and plugins as if they make such a big difference. 😂, 100 EQs, 100 compressors... what a waste of time. Since production gear went into "the box" we should be talking about it less and focus on the music. Now that they're digital it especially doesn't make much difference. Just use whatever makes you comfy! 😁 Cheers!

Actually lots of good records have used The SM57! For vocals
It’s a classic for drums of course but many love it for vocals you can sing really hard into it! Sounds great on the.right voice..
Go research how Prodigy’s Firestarter vocals were recorded.. 😂
    That will blow your mind…😅

Talking about compression: you really need to compress what you want to talk about in your videos. for almost 10 Minutes you say the same things just in 3 sentences, just in a different order. Get to the point or else nobody will watch your videos. Also don't act too much like you are teh knowledge-guy, when just that nonsense-talk makes you look like a fool. It's one of the first lessons you have to follow when doing a speech, honestly we learned this in middle school in like 7th grade or something.

Seriously? With the greatest of respect, you have a CZcams Channel with 300 subscribers. You are in NO position to lecture anyone on how to present content. You say that I present myself as a "know it all" as you in turn behave like a "know it all" yourself, telling me what to do. Cheers funny guy but no one here is taking you seriously. Bless you. . And btw. "no one" is a the only good wording you used.
But sure enough, if you want to keep acting like a fool and getting people annoyed with your wishy-washy talk that's like the same all over for a quarter of an hour, continue that way. I guess this is like the attention span of young people nowadays anyway.
