- When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Lyrics by Isaac Watts
Traditional Tune ("O Waly Waly")
Arrangement © 2023 by David Wesley
Virtual Choir #14 features a brand new arrangement for Isaac Watts' beloved hymn. "O Waly Waly," otherwise known as "The Water is Wide," is an old Scottish melody that really helps the lyrics soar. Join us as we remember Christ's suffering and death on that Wondrous Cross, and what it means to follow in His footsteps.
Virtual Choir #14 is a joint effort of 98 singers and ASL signers from 24 countries. In there you'll find grade-schoolers, grandparents, and everything in between! I'm so grateful for the chance to work with such a fantastic and diverse musical community over the last 6 years. Thanks to the newcomers and veterans alike!

This is absolutely beautiful, and what a perfect song for Good Friday. Thank you for this video, it is such a blessing to me.
Love the lyrics and this melody. I’ve heard it before and actually prefer this arrangement. Thank you!
I love this old Scottish melody and amazing harmony. BRAVO David and choir.❤
Wow! This is an old, familiar hymn, but this rendition with the ASL brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this Easter gift. God be praised! 🙌🏻
Absolutely awesome !! What blessing 🌟🌟🌟
A clear example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts! PTL!
So beautiful, was blessed by it. Made me wanna cry
There are so many layers in this, I'm astonished! It's like watching someone go from playing a piano with one finger to using 10 fingers in about a few months. I think David Wesley is moving into a level of composition that is a classic of it's own! I hope that these are noted and honored by all countries from which all these beautiful voices originate. Thank you for a beautiful Good Friday gift to us all.
Soon we finna be praising the King of love in white raiment above.
Finna? You mean “we are going to”?
Thank you for all the hard work- nicely done!
This has turned out beautifully :) Thanks David for all your hard work. May the message of this song touch many this Good Friday 😊
❤🙏🏻 *Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all*
This is an amazing piece of work! I can imagine how much effort it takes to align all the tracks such that the consonants are crisp and start / end at the same time! Once again, thank you, David, for all your hard work. It is always a privilege to sing in your choir 😊 May God use the message of this song to speak to many :)
🙏Thank you! This tune is a favourite. This arrangement is now a new favourite. God bless.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful song on Good Friday, good sir. As you said in your comments at the end of the video, we have forgiveness of our sins only b/c of our faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thank you again, my brother, for your faithfulness in using your gifts for King Jesus 🙂🙏🏼
💞LOVE THIS RENDITION and a perfect song for this Good Friday.✝️
Thank you and God bless you David and the choir.

Beautiful truth of Christ sacrifice for us, such Love! Thank you for a harmonious blessing. I appreciate you including sign language in your performances. I have several deaf friends and I was an interpreter for years. God bless you and all involved. ❤❤
God bless all who joined in bringing this forth. You are indeed touching lives. 🙏🏾
I've never heard these lyrics sung to this traditional melody before. Lovely.
Apparently it’s more common in certain countries - like Australia. My brother’s former church in Toronto used it as well. The church I attended this morning did it too!
Wonderful!!! So grateful for your hard work and ministry!
Yay, Amy Ackerman!
Beautiful song, David! Thank you so much. May you and your family enjoy a blessed Easter celebration! He is Risen!
Okay, I've listened to this so many times, and You Tube only allows one thumb up. So here we go: 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤
Thank you, David! This turned out to be one of your best so far. May God bless you richly this season.
So beautiful and so much truth and depth in the lyrics. Happy Easter and hopefully this will remind you of this love that's so amazing and so divine that demands our soul, our life and our all. ❤
Well done, everyone! Love it so much! Thanks, David! 😀
Thank you David and singers! Probably one of the most meaningful songs ever written. Very touching and beautiful.
Outstanding musical quality! Outstanding production quality! Keep worshipping.
❤❤ Delbert and I both loved this arrangement
Another triumph!
That last name is so familiar. Do you have family in south-western Ontario?
I ❤ your rendition of this classic hymn. Old hymns become new like us when we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
Thanks for such a vibrant, challenging and beautiful presentation of this great old hymn by Isaac Watts. David you have indeed done a splendid job as usual. Loved the people involved and particularly those who signed so the deaf and hard of hearing could have access to the lyrics of this great song. God bless you all. Lyn Lockrey, Australia.
Beautiful!
Amazing, Amazing
Thank you so so much . That was amazing and beautiful 🥰🇨🇦
Beautiful rendition of a timeless hymn! Love it! ❤

God’s Blessings! Happy Easter! Beautiful
Great arrangement! Perfect song for today. The editing was creative & a labor of love. May our Lord bless your efforts & all the people involved. The ending was unique. Have a wonderful Easter!!
Wonderful arrangement 🎼🎼 thank you so much ❤
This is the tune I learned when I first learned this hymn. It's such an old lovely tune - it's always been my understanding that the other tune is newer. Nevertheless, they are both beautiful and serve to lift our hearts and minds up to the awe-inspiring splendor that is the cross. Thanks for you work and thank you to all the lovely singers!
Another fine blessing for all. Your talent is limitless!
Nice!
I wish to thank you David for sharing this awesome Christian Hymn video with me .
I needed this blessing today. Thank you!
Love this arrangement, David! Not what I was expecting, but delightfully surprised! Thank you for this Easter blessing!
I am always amazed when I hear and see how the song comes together. Just beautiful, David.
Thanks David and choir. This will be a good day
Congrats, that was wonderful and perfect for waking up on this Good Friday morning ☀️✝️ God bless you
I love this so much! I will share with everyone! A beautiful tribute to the day Christ willingly sacrificed himself for all people!
Beautiful harmonies!! 👌🏾
Thank you, David, for this meaningful Easter gift! Powerful!!
All the beautiful brothers and sisters…what a wonderful blessing! Thank you dear Brother David! My heart is so happy ❤🙏🙏
Wow, well done! Great arrangement, lots of work gone into that. Blessings
Very moving and wonderful rendition of this hymn. ❤️🙏
Have heard this version before, and the choir sounds awesome. Not sure why I have seen comments hating on this.
Thank you and God bless!
David, thank you for this new tune (not new) and arrangement. When you sing a song by the same tune and arrangement for so many years, you may find yourself singing by rote, by habit. This caused me to consider the words more carefully than I might normally have.
Absolutely beautiful! Praise the Lord Jesus Christ!
Extraordinary! I never heard this version before, but after hearing this - I now prefer it! It’s amazing to read Isaac Watt’s history of this song and Charles Wesley’s incredible words about it! ❤
Charles Wesley’s words? Isaac Watts wrote the lyrics . :)
@@DavidWesley I should have clarified… Charles Wesley reportedly said of this hymn that he would give up all of the hymns he ever wrote just to have been the author of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. I read it somewhere recently. That’s what I was referring to. Sorry for the confusion.
Gotcha. That’s high praise from CW!
Awesome! Beautiful version. Great job signers!❤❤❤(Jane in SC)
Well done! Perfect timing to focus on the cross. It moved me. Thank you!
Beautiful work. Glory be to God
Another really excellent arrangement - I love hearing the interplay between the different parts.
This is WONDERFUL David! Brought cheer to my day. Thank you! I so wanted to participate in this one, but just couldn't make the time.
Your help behind the scenes is much more valuable!🤗
Beautiful!❤
Thank you this was just beautiful.
What a blessing!
Lovely seamless arrangement. Thank you David 😊🙏
It's a very good arrangement. All of the voices blended together nicely. It was very beautiful. 🙂💖🙌
Good arrangement. 😊
I enjoyed the signing
Very nice song 🎶.
Thanks for singing and supporting behind the scenes!
Love it! I enjoy putting lyrics of one song to the melody of another. Keeps things interesting!!
This tune has been used with When I Survey for a long long time. :)
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Great job!
So beautiful! What a wonderful way to praise God. I wish I had the confidence to sing with a choir. ❤
You can do it! It’s easier than singing a solo.
Sheilagh-David makes it fairly simple. With such a beautiful name and heart, I would encourage you to jump in and give it a try.
One of my favorite hymns of all-time! I know that version well and love both this and the original one. You have done an incredible job putting all these lovely voices together to praise Jesus! I can envision the heavenly choir when hearing this! Well done, David!
What do you mean by “original”? Isaac Watts wrote the lyrics decades before the writers of the Hamburg and Rockingham tunes were born. :)
Well, the one I meant is the Hamburg one taken from a Gregorian chant (from what some sources say.). The other one seems to be much more modern, if 50+ years is modern! Obviously you are the expert… I’m just a lowly little piano player from way back! 😀. Again thanks for your beautiful music!
I’m not claiming expertise by any means. I just had to do 5 minutes of research when choosing a song for the project. Both Rockingham nor O Waly Waly are also hundreds of years old.
The voicing and pitches are sooooo good especially the sopranos and altos. Nice job
Beautiful
