Man I love this movie. For the whole thing Jack thinks he's the hero when in reality he's the comedic sidekick to Wang lol
He is the hero, in a way, since he was the one who killed the villain. That being said, in all other ways, a sidekick.
I love that he's not incompetent. He's got great reactions, can hold his own in a fight, and can bluff like nobody's business. He's just incredibly unlucky

Actually, the Mythbusters proved years ago that bullets quickly slow to almost nothing in water.

Yep. They also found that the more powerful the gun the less penetration the bullet has into water. Bullets fired from high powered weapons simply disintegrate as soon as they hit the water.
The good old 'magic' of waters uncompressability... throw in hydrostatisity as well(?) and other traits unique to water, H2O is a marvelous substance.
Reason why falling from certain heights into water goes from breaking the surface with a plop to breaking bones with a snap.

Jacks boots are called snake boots, they protect the ankle and calf. It's a homage to Snake Plissken, Kurt's character in Escape from New York he filmed a few years earlier.
The line, "Call the president," is probably a reference to that movie as well.
One of the stabs Carpenter is making with Wang and Burton "Colors that never Run" isn't just that Wang is the Hero and Burton is the sidekick - it's that they are both equally American. Jack Burton is as stereotypically English of a name as Nigel Thornberry and talks in a John Wayne accent. He's the comedic stereotype. Wang Chi is the real deal .
Though, Jack does have the reflexes.

It was essentially IRL Livestreaming BEFORE the internet...you could cruise the interstate highways and listen to the CB and the truckers just blowing steam. They also kept track of the Highway Patrol and could alert you to many speed traps or cruisers.

@@pvanukoff not exactly, although there were a few that did, but it was much more than just that.. the CB had many different and important reasons. it was good for if you needed help or get hold of someone that could get help. it was good for getting traffic info, help avoiding major traffic and help avoiding closed routes due to an accident or something in the road. good for finding some place ahead to stop safely and rest. good for passing the time driving long miles, also helped keep drivers awake on long trips just having someone to talk to.

There was a deleted subplot where Gracie Law was born in China to American parents, which is why she technically counts as a Chinese woman with green eyes. Not just any green eyed woman will do.
To be fair, it IS very weird. If you aren't in the mood for it, it's not an easy movie to like. If you are in tune with it, it's great.

Old tv ads for Miller beer "If you've got the time, we've got the beer," showed working class people enjoying Miller during the good moments of their ordinary lives as "Miller Time." People still refer to the time they get off of their jobs for the day as "Miller Time."
"Miller Time" refers to a famous commercial campaign in the US during the 1970s and 1980s for Miller Beer, which was a popular brand, especially among blue collar workers. You'll hear a reference to "Miller Time" by Bill Murray in the movie Ghostbusters as well.

This film is a classic, one of those films that if you are flicking through channels and see this playing you end up just stopping and watching it again.
The actor who plays David Lo Pan is also the voice of Po's father in Kung Fu Panda. On MythBusters they showed that even a high-powered rifle can only send a bullet a few feet into the water.
I think I remember him in certain episodes of the television show Kung Fu, starring David Carradine.
James Hong has literally starred in everything. Over 600 movies.
The actor is legendary James Hong.
He's also the grandpa in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
He was also in Balls of Fury, which won the Oscar for Best Film Ever Made.

The point most people totally missed about this movie is that Kurk Russel's character (Jack Burton), although ultimately the hero of the movie, is not the main “action-star” hero ---- he's really just the goofy side-kick. He's the comic relief. The real “action star” hero of the movie was his friend 'Wang Chi'. Jack Burton was actually Wang Chi's side-kick...lol
Jack was talking on a CB Radio to others who also have a CB Radio. It was very common for truckers to use them. Yes, we still use checks, but not as often as I use to.
My dad drove a semi for 20 years. His handle was Baby Huey.
Plus, in the '70s truck drivers were, for some reason, a big thing. There was even entire genre of entertainment based around truckers with ape companions.
I still write maybe fifteen checks a year - and twelve of them are for rent.

Say what you will, I will always maintain that BTILC is definitely among the best western kung fu sci fi magic horror trucker action comedies of the 1980s.

This is one of my all time faves! The whole concept of the traditional 'hero,' the big talking American tough guy ending up being the sidekick/comic relief is such a perfect subversion of standard action movie tropes. All of the performances (particularly Lo Pan and Egg Shen) are amazing. The music, the ridiculous style. "Chinese have a lot of hells..." "It's all in the reflexes..." Just love this movie.

`The funny glasses are the type used in snow covered areas to prevent snow blindness.
They are a precursor to polarized lenses. They filter out most of the light with a wave form perpendicular to the slit, which is the orientation that most of the light reflected off a snow-covered landscape would be. They are surprisingly effective.

A friend and I were walking by a theater back in 1986 and saw this movie was starting in a few minutes. We had no clue what it was even about, but we both absolutely loved it. So glad you got to experience this Mary!
Jack Burton is pure American bravado personified! They need to do a sequel with Kurt Russell as Ol' Man Jack, still driving a truck, still stepping into situations that are completely out of his wheelhouse yet he's still able to play it off like he was born to be there. That's money right there!

The glasses were originally used by people in Arctic areas to prevent snow blindness but for a short time (a really short time ) in the eighties they sort of became a fashionable to wear ( again a really short time ( really short)). Miller Time is an advertisement for an American beer company called Miller Beer. Meaning that whenever time someone starts to drink beer is supposed to be the time that person is supposed to be drinking Miller beer.

I'd listen in on people just yammering on about themselves...........lol............for free.

CB was and still is a great free way to communicate and get through to emergency crews incase your cellphone doesn't.

I think checks are only normally used to pay "official" type bills where there isn't another means to pay it, or the person is older and not aware of how to set up a draft from their bank account (or maybe they don't want to do all of that). It's pretty rare for people to actually pay with a check anymore. It's most credit/debit cards or cash. Some outdated companies like utility companies, municipal trash services, might only take check payments because they are behind the times.

This is such a fun movie honestly. It's weird, it's funny, it has action, and it's a fun rewatch. One of Carpenter's more underrated movies and a cool subversion where instead of barging into their world, Jack, the "action hero" is actually second fiddle to Wang's character.
Jack, the all American hero, is just the comic relief sidekick in this.
When Jack Burton quoted, “Call the President”, that was another reference to his earlier movie, “Escape From New York”.
"What are they playing?"
The first game they're playing in that gambling scene is Fan-Tan, a pretty old school Chinese gambling game. It used to be huge in west coast North American Chinatowns but by the time this movie is set it had been essentially dead for 3 generations. Then, the game with the black tiles with white and red spots is Pai Gow. That one is still pretty popular and is played to a limited extent in modern west coast casinos.

7:16 - "What is Miller time?" - More slang. It's a classic advertising slogan from a brand of beer named Miller. Basically it means time to relax and have a beer.
The main joke of the movie is that Jack is framed as being the hero, but he's actually the sidekick while Wang is the hero. He does most of the fighting while Jack keeps screwing up.

Also why anything he succeeded at was mostly incidental, and he was often late for the action.
Kurt said he was doing a John Wayne impersonation, who was a big star of cowboy/ww2 movies back in the day.
Wayne even played Genghis Khan, but he pretty much always acted the same. He was commonly impersonated by comedians
Also the CB, (Citizens Band) radio was popular in the 70's mainly used by truck drivers to communicate, but could be used by anyone.
You had a number of different channels you could switch to, and people would just chat etc, or rant, or do stream of consciousness talks.

At the beginning of the movie, he is talking into a citizen band radio, commonly called a CB radio. They are still used by truck drivers to talk with each other. Anyone in range can dial into a channel and talk or listen.
In the 70’s and early 80’s there were a lot of popular movies and tv shows in the US involving truck driving and CB’s became pretty popular even in regular cars for a while.
Jack is said 72 times according to my search of the script.

CB radios were quite popular back when this movie was made. Truckers used them while traveling to and from their destinations. There were numerous channels, with slightly different frequencies, for chatting with other truckers. In this case, Jack was just talking to whoever was listening on his channel.
It seems reminiscent of the early 1900s when radio was new technology. Ship radio operators used to yap about random things and even would play songs off a record player into the microphone to other ship radios before regulations for proper ship radio use were written.

Yes, this is a western. When was originally written to be taken place during the California gold rush that Egg Shen talked about. Because of budget constraints they moved it to taking place in the modern day.

The other actress with our group of heroes is Kate Burton (Margo) who has legendary parents. Her dad is Richard Burton and her step mom is non other than Elizabeth Taylor.

Perhaps one of my favorite movies! Jack's bluster, the great action, really right comedy, and killer soundtrack. Just so much fun! And so much texture with this Chinese mythology that Jack (and us) are so clueless about and just goes with it.
Many of the names in this movie, the cinematography, and the tropes it portrays are references to Hong Kong action movies of the 1970s. It's an American love letter to Chinese fantasy action films with tons of faithful recreations of shots and homages to specific characters. Of course, most Americans didn't know that at the time but relying on the ties to Hong Kong films helped make it not just a parody or condescending take on Chinese culture and secured a legacy as a cult classic.

Another John Carpenter's great movie that I love is Starman (1984). And this movie is from some reason very underrated. But it is lovely sci-fi romance.
Kurt Russell was doing an impression of John Wayne for this movie. For another movie he did with John Carpenter, Escape From New York, Russell was doing Clint Eastwood.

Jack was using a CB (citizen's band) radio in his truck, basically talking to whomever was out there - mostly other truckers but also a lot of other people as well.. There was a time when CB Radio was absolutely *HUGE* .
John Carpenter did a lot of the location filming in San Francisco's Chinatown. Ever since, he maintains stuff happened while they were there that was even wilder than anything in the movie.
There is a school of thought suggesting that Jack's friend is the actual hero of the story, and that Jack is the bumbling sidekick. I feel there is something to this argument.
Kurt Russell's portrayal of Jack Burton owes a great deal to John Wayne. Anyone who ever heard The Duke speak should know exactly what I mean.
No sequel, though there have been comics and graphics novels. Both Kurt Russell and John Carpenter kicked around ideas over the years, but nothing as yet.
For those who are fans of old Hong Kong "Kung Fu" movies in the US, this thing is our equivalent to "Mars Attacks" (1996) for science fiction fans. I discovered why I loved Tarentino films when he threw up the Shaw Bros logo in the intro to "Kill Bill". 'Holy crap, we grew up watching the same stuff.' And another vote for James Hong. When I saw that old parody of 'Gangnam Style' done by people who loved this film, I was bouncing off the walls with excitement when James showed up in it!

We called them "NewWave" glasses, seen a lot in MTv music videos back in the good ole days.
I had a t-shirt with Garfield the cat standing upright as usual. He had on a pair of NewWave glasses, a purple Charvel Jackson guitar, Japanese rising sun halfshirt, and some spandex pants.
Over his head was "I'm A Trend Setter". I have that shirt now as wall decor in my music studio.

This is one of those movies where people either really get into it or are put off by its quirky sense of humor. Glad you enjoyed it.
One of my favorite scenes is when Jack sneaks in to try to rescue Wang's girlfriend. The way he's dressed reminds me of Kurt Russell's days working for Disney. Of course, Disney was different back then.
I do still occasionally accept checks as payment. It always takes me a little longer than normal because it's not as common, but it happens.

The interesting thing about those slit glasses is they act somewhat like sun glasses, also if you reduce the slit even more it begins to act like a lens... if you poke a small hole in a piece of paper and put it up to your eye it can make what you see clearer, the other thing is everything you see is from light coming in from a small hole smaller than the slit in those glasses (your iris), and of the light that gets into your eyes only a small area of your vision is actually clear with a good 50% of it basically 'assumed' and made up from blurs and your brain filling in the gaps.
So yeah those glasses look goofy, but they actually work :P
"Who is he talking to?" Truckers at the time - and to a more limited extent, still today - communicated with one-another by CB radio. Usually things like warnings of accidents or cops checking for speeders or closed roads or such, but also just chatting with one another. And some, yes, almost did put on their own radio shows as they drove.
Expect a couple hundred comments about Jack actually being the sidekick while he think he's the hero....
I still write checks for some things like my lawn mower guy and the pest management folks.

Kind of like Livestreaming but absolutely zero feedback from the "audience" ...sometimes others get a bit bitchy for the verbal diarrhea, but there wasn't much to do back in the 80's on a haul, especially when you are alone.... .:P
There was a guy in my area nack then then who lived on top of a mountain (well, what passes for a mountain here), had a huge antenna and an illegal linear amplifier. He would "DJ" and play records, sometimes even taking requests.😂

Ah a movie with a lawyer for Mary! While I really like this movie probably my favorite John Carpenter film is either Starman (1984) or Escape From New York (1981). Very different films but both are excellent. In addition to not being the hero it will probably help your understanding of this movie if you reconcile with the fact that Jack is basically an idiot.
Starman doesn’t get enough love. I adore that movie.
