  • The day has finally arrived to "thread the needle" and installed the half ton oak beam into the cottage, but before that can happen the old damaged one needs to be removed. With the budget almost gone it's going to take some clever tricks to install this beast, can we do it ourselves? you will have to watch to find out

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Epic. First the chainsaw, then the cherry picker, then the scaffold and a supporting role by the digger. Your dad and Sean's smiles say it all. Hooray for Mick, Sean, Billy and Michael.

@@probstnatalie I never thought I would give a flat ding dang about a beam being put in but then I think about it I like building and construction but I didn't think I would have been watching and loving the fact it was being done but then I am so happy ysee the progress made on the cottage and thank dear Daddy for his dream for the angels were truly talking to him to let him know the beam Michael had was rotten they were about to go on with full on construction and that second floor would cave in that may have saved Michael's and others lives. Always keep your ears and eyes open to a psychic thought it a dream you just may be getting a message that could change the course of your life just think if Michael's father said oh it was just a dream but Michael listened to his father when he said I had a dream your main beam is rotten he said ok what do we do. They checked it ,it might awell have been saw dust . Good lesson listen to your father go with your instincts ,listen to your messages may the Angels be with you all! Julia Elizabeth Kneece Gregg

Are you going to seal that end-grain, before rebuilding that outer wall? So that someone 300 years from now blesses your kind prescience for preventing rot?!

Wonderful!! I’d save a couple of those crosscuts to use beside my comfy chair. Just about the perfect size for a cup of tea and some biscuits

Michael mentioned elsewhere that he will use some of the good oak from the old beam for a butchers block, etc.

Holding my breath, what a team, had a good laugh when Sean said the beam was upside down, my late husband and father built our house from the ground up, got a phone call at work from my dad, saying my husband had finished all the brick work and realised he had laid them all upside down, after I had a total break down and my dad had stopped laughing said that had made his day and hung up on me.

Michael, you seem to be calm during this intense project. I was stress just watching.
    It’s all coming together now.
