Jordan Peele did a fantastic job with this. A pair of golden scissors. That was all Jordan Peele needed to build hype for his newest nightmare and sophomore follow-up to 2017's psychological race-fueled horror entry Get Out. Which a reaction is coming next week. If Get Out was meant to be an appetizer showing glimpses of skill and greatness amplified in the main course: Us is that five-star dining experience we, and the horror genre, have been starved of and craving for years. Let's start with the score since it's so unbelievably good. Ever since I first heard that spooky, slowed concerto remix of Luniz's '5 On It' in the trailers and Peele's motivations/classics he wanted to pay homage to from Psycho to Jaws to The Shining to The Babadook to It Follows. From its staccato-plucked orchestral themes rife with jarring string aggressions reminiscent of Psycho and Jaws iconic themes to its soft-balanced, airy quartet melodies discordantly happy-go-lucky and sweepingly Shining and It Follows-like, plus everything from tribal drums to theme rehashes to even hip-hop, the score is breathtakingly original and disturbing while also culturally authentic and auteuristic.
    Synopsis
Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the family is horrified to learn that each attacker takes the appearance of one of them.

the Hands Across America thing is connected to the core symbolism of the movie: an "invisible" population of Americans who live in poverty, who are humans just like everyone else, who could be pulled up and helped, but aren't, because they're "different" and "don't deserve a handout." Hands Across America was a promise that was never kept, just like how the REAL Adelaide says "You could have taken me with you" instead of switching places.

The movie also has a social commentary about wealth inequity and how easy it is to be privileged and comfortable and not realizing how many people are out there starving and living on nothing (eating rabbits and wearing the same red jumpsuits). The speech about “how it must have been to be grow up with the sky” touches on the privileges most of US take for granted. I agree with Oak, this one takes a couple of watches to fully appreciate.

jordan peele movies have a simple concept: this one is about class. they're literally above the tethered, the tethered have to suffer for the people above can enjoy their lives.
"why is no one armed?" every weapon the family used are a symbol of wealth. also, if the person you're shooting looks like your kid, it might give you pause. "why the hands across america?" it was an ultimately empty/performative show of solidarity. "where are the police and the military" a lot are probably dead and the rest are getting a whole bunch of 911 calls probably. and if there's one of everybody in america, even people in power can easily be killed in their homes and perhaps no one was there to call the shots.
but ultimately it's how in america, even if you escape poverty, you will never truly be someone who was born in wealth. a nice touch is the dad is wearing a sweater from an hbcu, where college is said to be a great way to escape poverty, but if you go to an hbcu you went to an institution born out of opression. not only that, the rich are also not happy because the pursuit of being richer, prettier, etc. is ultimately empty.
there's a bunch more stuff but i'm not american or black so i'm definitely gonna miss nuances

Red tells Adelaide that "the Tethered" are actually genetic clones created by the government to control the originals on the surface. When the experiment failed, the Tethered were abandoned underground for generations, mindlessly mimicking the actions of their counterparts and surviving on rabbit meat. After they realized that Red was "different from the others,” she organized them to escape and take vengeance by murdering their counterparts.

Jordan's movies have very specific messages, mostly about race and social issues. This one speaks a lot about duality and how sometimes we can be our worst enemy. The hands across america ending is meant to be a form of ''protest'' or ''now you have to look at us, we are people too'' like a different class treated badly, making their stand and getting a better life after being treated unfairly all their lives. Other examples of Jordan's , messages is the ''f* ck the police'' scene(it explains itself), Jeremiah 11:11 verse says ''I am about to bring on them disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to me, but I will not hear them”, the scene with Elisabeth Moss doube cuts her face with te scissors shows you how the original was getting plastic surgery to look ''pretty'' so she tries to do the same herself to have a nicer smile because she has had to ''operate'' on herself anytime the original had surgery. Adelaide keeps getting out of the car to check on the kids because they are part her kids too so she cannot stop herself. I hope this helps, there are more meanings i think but this is all i remember. Sorry for the long comment. As always greetings from Argentina.

There is the surface layer of what is going on on screen but then there is the second layer which is usually some sort of commentary on racism or the entertainment industry or class. There’s so much good about this (and all of Peele’s horror). The directing, the imagery and symbolism, the sound design and lighting. The stand out in this movie is the acting though. The fact that everyone had to play two completely different roles and that both of their characters had to interact convincingly (though that’s also directing). And the physicality of the doubles is unreal. I think I was most amused by Josh’s double though. I’m pretty sure the actor just said “yeah, I’m gonna play him as a t-Rex. You cool with that?”

Jordan Peele and Ari Aster are two of my favorite more modern-day directors! Their films you have to watch several times to pick up on all of the clues they give you throughout their movies, and there are A LOT!!
Jordan Peele loves dealing with topics that are more current and/ or not addressed quite often in cinema which is why his films are so refreshing and worthy of the hype they get. In turns of Us he deals with a lot of issues with race and classism. It deals heavily with the tethered representing poorer populations and the main cast are representative of the more wealthy. The tethered are envious of those who get to see the sky because they live "rich and fulfilling lives." While the tethered are forced to follow in their shadows. Eating "rabbits raw and bloody" while those above them figuratively and literally are fortunate enough not to do so.
For Hands Across America it was basically a hypocritical stunt that was posed to help the homeless but it ended up doing more harm than good. For one thing is was to help the homeless but it was extremely expensive to put the event together. The basis for Hands Across America was that people from all over would hold hands for 15 minutes to represent physical unity. And each person would donate at least $10 towards helping the homeless.
One issue was that "it also drew the unfortunate participation of President Ronald Reagan the same week that he blamed the country's hunger problems on the poor, brainlessly claiming that no one "is going hungry in America simply by reason of denial or lack of ability to feed them," but because there was "a lack of knowledge on the part of the people as to what things are available.""

However, they abandoned the project because humans proved too willful. Red (the REAL girl/woman) was able to inspire and lead the others. Adelaide (the tether/cloned girl-woman) was also willful.

I know gun nuts think guns are the best weapon, but guns weren’t going to help you. They came at you sideways. You wouldn’t have time to realize you were in danger before they were cutting your throat. If you are responsible and safe, your gun isn’t going to be right there and loaded. And as you saw, that white family was dead in twenty seconds.
Everyone BUT Adelaide’s family was killed as fast as the white family.
The reason the Red team was taking their time killing Adalaide’s family is because it was personal. Red wanted Adalaide to suffer.
Y’all should be old enough to remember hands across America and how the charity was an utter failure. That is was a statement. It will really blow your mind when you realize Red waited until her mother died so she wouldn’t suffer the horror.

This one definitely grew on me the more I thought about it. A lot more daring than Get Out was, sometimes it didn't always land but I had to appreciate thee attempts all the same. Love the commentary and think of it a lot more fondly now. I have to say, "Nope" which just came out this year feels like his most consistent work so far. Not as bold as Us in the social commentary but it lets it be just a real tight solid thriller with some gorgeous anime-like visuals.

Also as someone who grew up in the Bay Area of California and even went to school in Santa Cruz, it's definitely not common for a well off middle class household to just have guns at the ready as much as other parts of the US probably. Given that it's not even their main home it's less likely.

Great reaction you guys. Not sure if you picked up on it… but it’s heavily implied that the son was also a “tethered” and the one that had the burned face and died was the original one. The clue was that he “couldn’t remember how to do the magic trick” with the lighter as well as being stuck in that closet for a long time before they found him. The original was replaced at that time, and the “tethered” didn’t know everything that the original knew. Also the look between him and the mom at the end also heavily implies that they are the same.
The Hands Across America, I believe is just the mantra that the original used to unite all of the tethered underneath to rise up and kill the originals. The tethered weren’t taught anything and they don’t have “souls” so there’s no personality and nothing that they desire. So the end result is simply them standing and joining hands for the rest of their lives. Really sad ending in that respect.

of all the questions about this movie I've ever had running through my head, "who created the Tethered" has never been one of them. I don't think there's any point to knowing. however they came about, they were this problem that whichever higher-ups couldn't figure out how to deal with, and so they chose to not deal with it in hopes it'd go away. turns out when someone, let alone a whole race of people, is completely neglected for their entire life they end up having emotions and wanting to do things, so yeah no it super duper didn't go away. I love Jordan Peele's movies and I love to dissect them, but - and I don't want to sound like I'm saying you're watching movies wrong or whatever - that dissection is never focused on explaining how we got here, because the how is nowhere near as important to me as the what and why.
not saying i didn't enjoy the video. good video. just putting in my couple cents.

But there is a reference to The Lost Boys shooting by the carousel. They’re walking down the Santa Monica boardwalk and the mother says, “You know they’re shooting a movie over there by the carousel.”

I’m pretty sure the Hands Across America thing from the 80’s was significant because that was the event the government used as a cover to make clones of so many Americans, when 6 million people held hands in one continuous line. Which means the events of this movie are only happening in America.
Also, since the clones are tethered to their counterparts daily actions, they continued to reproduce with the same tethers and have identical clone children for future generations, so it’s likely much more than 6 million clones by the time they take over, and that’s why there are still clones of children even though Hands Across America was in the 80s.

This movie is applied rasist issue in the US,
The opening show only 1 black rabbits among white,
there are also some animals hidden meaning during this movie,
    - rabits :the zora shirt show rabbits, all the rabit dolls,
    - spiders : itsy bitsy spider mumbling (you can check the lyric), hand gesture of Adeline's shadow.
11.11 meaning based on numerology and bible is relates each other, about something underground and shadow
How to kill - attack the throat to shut down the voice,
The reason of hands across is because the young adeline only remember that when she was young she saw that in the ads. Her action to show the shadow is success to reach the ground.
Why the clothes all red and wears glove in one hand because that is what adeline remember when she have thriller shirt - refers to michael jackson.
Why scissors - because it represent twins.
25 mei adeline birthday - zodiac gemini (twins)
Adeline - city in the means place underground
This movie is cool when you can see the hidden meaning on it.

But in the beginning where she was scared when she was walking through the forest when she was a little, she was whistling the itsy Bixby spider when she was scared, and the situation of when her other self was getting scared when it was intruding the family she didn't whistle instead. She was worried for her family because she knew it was coming. But at the very end, when the herself in the red was about to die. She started to whistle the same thing. She whistled when she was little when she was afraid.

I love how the Oak is like "a little too predictable" and then seconds later laughing and grimacing, "I didn't see that coming" lol We see helicopters at the end, we see during the broadcast there were cops at least the lights meaning they died. The Government started a cloning process which, Red explained. She says they could duplicate the body but not the soul and once they figured out they couldn't they abandoned the project and left these clones to fend for themselves. Red, being able to talk, got looked at as a leader and no telling what else happened to her, she became mad as a hatter and having probably only able to watch the hands across America video, a system in which said they were gonna help America and never did, Red used that as her way of actually cleansing the world and releasing them from below.
