Roland VP-9000 How to create Daft Punk Vocals

  • On Vintagesynth they mentioned that the Roland VP-9000 is used on the Daft Punk album 'Discovery'.
As an owner of this sampler I took the challenge to recreate this incredible song.
Beside this challenge I gave myself other goals.
    1. DAWless recording (no use of a computer)
    2. All tracks need to played at once. No prerecording.
    3. No sound design. Just bread&butter sounds
You can see the result of the recreation at the end of this video.
In this video I explain how I used the Roland VP-9000 for the vocals.
Of course I used my own voice. :-)
For more info about projects I am working on check my website.

Hey MM, I just got a VP-9000 Based partially on this vid (thank you!) But when using the "Step" mode like you did here, sometimes a midi note doesn't trigger a VP slice. And I get the same results whether I'm triggering notes with an AKAI MPC One or a Bass Station II. Any ideas what I"m doing wrong? Thanks.

      Hey!
Let me think, let me think...(Wish I hadn't sold my VP....)
      How is Legato set?
And is there indeed a slice which isn't triggered? Or do you need to add an extra slicing point?

@@theMIDImaniac thanks! I just managed to get one, it seems like there is a computer software. I need to dive into the manual, but it seems like you only can store less than a minute of patches in mono on the internal memory? Does it come with presets, meaning I can easily factory reset it? Or should I get ZIP cartridges?

Yes, there's software available. I have the original disk here for Mac OS9 and Windows.

    Hello,
This is a very informative video and I appreciate the love for the vintage samplers as much as the next guy but I was confused on a simple topic. How are you connecting the VP-9000 to the keyboard? Also, would I be able to connect this to my ASR-10 and still play other samples in the other banks while having these voiced-melodies in another bank? I hope this makes sense, if not, spare me. Thank you guys!

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  Před 5 lety

      Hi!
Thanks for sending me your comment and your question.
The way to connect the VP to your keyboard is very simple.
Connect a MIDI cable from MIDI-in VP-9000 to MIDI-out on keyboard.
The VP-9000 can send out on 6 different channels, so let's say Part 1 = MIDI Channel 1, Part 2 = MIDI Channel 2 etc.
This makes it possible to use your ASR-10 with other samples and the voiced-melodies in other banks at the same time.
For example: You use on Part 1 = MIDI channel 1 the voiced melodies and on Part 2 you create a map with a total of 12 samples spread of an octave on your keyboard. On Part 3 you put a chopped beat to play it on an octave.
Then still you have 3 parts left for other samples.
      Sounds complicated?
Stay tuned because soon I will upload more vids about this strange but beautiful unit.
      Grtzzz, Roger

Roger, Does a VP-9000 have relays that age and fail, like the ones in ans-50?
I see a VP-9000 for sale it works but has distorted sampling. I'm tempted to buy it, but relays are all I'm familiar with causing distorted output.
    Please respond to me soon.

      Hi Leo,
      Thanks for asking.
I really don't know about the relays ageing and failing.
Distorted sampling? Hmmm...With input on all channels? Coax/Opti/Front and back?
And what about importing WAV-files and then process them?
Is it also with playing samples or just with recording?
I mean, you could install a CF-reader and then use lots of WAV-files to process without using the Sampling function.

Roger someone has an sp-808ex on Reverb today with a card reader for $1200. Crazy money I know, but how is it working? When you tried did you limit your card size to 250mb and format in fat 32? was it atapi? The world needs answers. @@theMIDImaniac

      @theMIDImaniac  Před 3 lety

      Leo Oliver 1200$?? Disgusting!!
My SP-808 with card reader takes different sizes of cards. The maximum to be handled by the SP is 512MB which gives 2 hours sampling time on 44.1Khz and almost 3 hours on 32Khz.
So, with a 1 Gb or 4 Gb cf card it still gives ‘only’ 2/3hrs.

Yes, this is Variphrase. The difference between vari and voco is that Vicodin is based on an incoming carrier (sound) and then mixing it with your voice.
Variphrase is just your voice and then playing with it.
Vocoder is live and Variphrase is pre-recorded.
