  • Some have questioned why the newly released TRF420X has not gone with the current trend of mid-pulley/mid-motor cars forgetting that Tamiya did release in December 2020 a mid-motor car in the TA07MSX. Except that the TA07MSX is unconventional using a single belt, making for an interesting comparison between the two cars. Hope you enjoy the video!

Wish Tamiya put this level of quality in more of their kits. Most of their stuff is barely above toy grade and/or plagued with bad design.

This has got to do with marketing, sales & profit. The lower end kits target a different segment & generate revenue. I’m sure it’s to balance out different RC segments that are not so profitable. We have seen TLR & AE pull out of touring cars. Kyosho is going more the RTR route and has been on-sold itself twice. I too would like to see the TRF buggies return but it has to be profitable. I would prefer Tamiya continue to make lower end kits if it ensures their survivability. And once in awhile still give us high end kits like this.

Have you had the chance to drive either one of these cars? Curious how they compare with each other and the older 420.

The TA07MSX is very easy to drive on our relatively small medium grip track. Very little understeer or oversteer. It really is true to ‘Superlative traction, awesome adaptability’. The TRF420X I have not had a chance yet. But here is a race report of the TRF420X on the same track. 🙂

@@t-studioworks do you think the MSX would work well on a long, low-grip track? Or would I be better off buying the old 420 since there’s still a few around for less money? Don’t think the 420X would do that well there.

Our local Tamiya tech guru at the track had this to say, ‘I will say the different cars will work on the long low grip track, but probably the 07MSX & 420X will be easier to drive.. if you are one that loves to tinker/play around with different configurations / settings, probably the 07MSX might be a better choice as you get different pulley positions which is something that the TRF doesn't allow, but to have ease of setup advice available then the TRF will be the way to go as there are more people running the TRF"

A Question for you…. It seems that my kit did not come with the 2nd set of carbon pieces for the more forward motor options. Any Suggestions?

Hi there! The two motor position is only for the TA07MSX. Not for the 420X. Did you buy the kit new? I didn’t take a video when building the TA07MSX. If you refer this unboxing video from others at 3.17 you will see that the two lengths of carbon top plate options are attached to the bottom deck bags. Are you also missing a second chassis? m.czcams.com/video/7jFaQ0hhlE4/video.html
