  • One of the most important films about nursing made in the 20th Century, "Mrs. Reynolds Needs a Nurse" was written in 1963 by Dolores Little, MN, RN, a nursing supervisor at the University of Washington Hospital, Seattle who had just completed her master's degree. The film documented a case study of an elderly lady who was transferred to the university hospital in multisystem failure, accompanied by her husband and multiple suitcases of her belongings. Mrs Reynolds was a needy and demanding patient whose fears and anxieties were expressed by her annoying attempts to get attention, treating the nurses like servants and complaining about much of the care given to her. Mrs Reynolds' 8-month-long hospitalization showcased the importance of individualizing care, being aware of both emotional and physical needs, collaborating with other disciplines, and it demonstrated the nurse's role as a patient advocate with clinical competencies that were an early version of today's case managers.
Film contains many shots of an urban hospital, doctors, surgery, patients, nurses, general hospital, head nurse, and more.

I watched this in nursing school in the 1970s and am still moved by it. This is still relevant today and nursing needs to get back to personalizing care of patients.

if only health care were like this anymore, then maybe people wouldn't be afraid, and that they could trust the medical establishment, how ever now a days, who knows, some have better experiences and some have worse, , we can't begin to understand unless we start to learn how to understand all sides of all peoples, but it seems that there is just not enough people wanting to either learn to understand others, or that perhaps some are under the impression that they have it all figured out, and it is not just about health care or even the parts that health care over looks, but what is not present nor what is included, or even what may or maybe not be represented properly, , and that the people itself are not invisible, and that our voices can carry on, when shared in unison, it is a struggle we all share , value in over rated in some ways and under appreciated in others , or that it seems value is either not addressed or value is overlooked entirely,

You. are correct. The movie depicts how well or not we communicate with patients and how well or not we anticipate their needs. In the old days of nursing schools, they taught anticipatory guidance and personalizing the care of patients. Get back to Florence Nightingale and get rid of the medical model. Nursing used to run all of the departments in the hospital, not business men.

Nursing has definitely taken a huge backward step from those days, and it's definitely not for the better. Back then, nurses were trained in house by older more experienced nurses. It's a sign of the times we live in - where costs take priority over standard of care. There are a few exceptions, but they are rare and its easy to spot an old school in house trained nurse.

i watched this with the song Vishnu by Patrick Patrikios in the background on repeat. and when Mrs Reynolds passed away the song reached the end movement at 1:56, witch fitted in very well. insert czcams.com/video/MnmfG4ZXb_s/video.html and use the timestamp 1:56.

Just like nursing was when I became a nurse years ago. They don't train nurses like that any more..

I don’t think most people would mind helping the likes of the old bitty. I would presume it’s the whining and nasally tone that really annoys people. If she would talk like a normal person and not whine during conversations she would find nurses more amenable to her needs.
