  • After a busy couple of months I'm back with another video from a very exciting location in the UK.
As many of you will know I LOVE Brown Hares and have been photographing them for many years looking to constantly expand and develop my portfolio.
Havergate Island owned by the RSPB (one of the UK's major NGO's for nature conservation and one I've worked with for many years) is a unique spot. This river Island in Suffolk is a top class location for Brown hares when them often being confiding and tolerant of people. As the island is off limits to the public (unless on the few boat trips per year), I'm extremely grateful to have been granted the amazing opportunity to head over and stay alone on the island and work with these wonderful animals.... and with any luck, I'll nail some shots I've been after for a long time!
In this first episode I'm getting out to start my shooting, working with a 70-200mmm lens to create some early portraits.
You can find out more about the RSPB and Havergate Island here and they work they are doing for conservation www.rspb.org.u...
A huge thanks to the warden Lyndsey for all the help!
A huge thanks also to Jackery for the explore 1000. It has been an essential on this trip to keep my shoot running, Over the last few months the power pack has been in the car and used constantly for charging and working on the go and for a locations like this when power is limited, the ability to have a huge reserve + solar for keeping things charged is a real life saver when producing media. Jackery have a range of packs for all kinds of use but the Explore 1000 I've found to be a great for my needs uk.jackery.com...
The new Nikon Monarch M7+ are available here and perfect for any wildlife photographers looking for top optical performance in a more budget friendly model www.nikon.co.u...
Also the Nikon Z9 as many of you know is now my main camera everyday, it's performing brilliantly and in all honesty I fall a little more in love with it on every shoot! Over the last few weeks on back to back shoots it's been awesome! tidd.ly/2ZTkiEB

A great video! And your love for brown hares has rubbed off on me! It was nice to see you crawling, for I have not tried this way of getting closer. ))) Thank you for sharing!

Yes I always find the low profile best for approach’s, slow movements, keeping low reduces your profile against the sky

For sure, it was amazing to spend time on the island alone, surrounded by my favourites!

  • @tomchalephotography6477

What a brilliant film Tom. Thank you for taking us on this truly amazing journey. I also spent a whole week with all the Hare’s in the surrounding fields around our house and made a short film, didn’t include my best shots in the film though, I saved them for other social media platforms 😉. Currently waiting on my new Z9 to arrive, but don’t think I can/will part with my D500 🤷🏼‍♂️, so can’t wait to start shooting with that 😬. Anyway, keep up the good work my friend 🙏🏻👍

Brilliant Tom amazed how close they let you get. I have a few on my local patch, I but have to keep my distance and let them come to me.

Yes for most of the hares I work with in Herts/Cambridge it’s a waiting game or result of remote camera work but these guys are rather special! Can’t wait to get back for more time with them

I do love stitching panoramic images, I may have made a couple with the hares ;) Working with the 300mm and that style does make a great mix I feel too!

Another great video Tom. Thanks for your efforts. I sometimes go out and take 1 lens be it either my 105 MC, 70-200 2.8 or my 200-500 5.6 and just use that for the day. It’s a great way to challenge yourself and make you think outside the box. Was great to see someone like yourself doing a similar thing.
    Take care and stay safe.

      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 2 lety +1

Yes for sure, I always feel it's important to deliberately spend time with pieces of gear to help really get to know them and force you to think more creatively. Every new bit of gear I get or when I haven't picked something up in a while, I like to get out and spend a few days simply focused on really understanding each bit of gear!

Tom are you going to try the new 400mmf4.5 soon? I would like to see a comparison with your 300mm2.8 in terms of rendering in particular and to have your opinion.

Hey Julien, I'm hoping to get my hands on one as soon as possible for some testing, I'm too looking forward to see how it works for my style of shooting, could make for an awesome travel companion!
