Learning how to write vocal melody can be a tough part of the songwriting process. Not only do we want to learn how to come up with an original melody, but also how to write GOOD vocal melodies. I have a method to share today, that just might be the ultimate vocal melody hack. I call the technique, "Melody Maximizer." This is something I started doing to come up with melodies for songs a while, and I'm pumped to share this workflow with you in this vocal melody tutorial. As I say in the video, I'm convinced this method will turn you into a human vocal melody generator!
To make a vocal melody for a song, I think it's easiest to write vocal melody over chords. Sometimes melody ideas can just come to you on their own, but often it's easiest to "draw them out" with some music already going. So to find vocal melodies quickly, spend your time dialing in an "initial vibe." This is that first piece of music you make, with your instrument or inside a DAW. For the melody maximizer to work its magic, I suggest you really spend time getting some music going that you REALLY dig. Don't rush through this. If the music you have going doesn't really inspire you to write anything... then how are you supposed to make good vocal melodies? It's way easier to write singing melody if what you have to write TO is super dope to you.
I hope this songwriter / producer tutorial is helpful, I tried to pack it full with some of my best vocal melody tips!

How can I find your music your fucking dope bro
in 2015 , I record a gibberish like this and I can listen to it even today ,never bores me. now I need to make production on it. gotta do it
Love it! Gibberish that doesn't bore you after a long time is a KEY sign it needs to be turned into a song. You can totally do it! Stay tuned- I have some videos coming soon to help 👊🏻
@@NathanEswine awl-right my friend 😃
@aroy Man, crazy for creatively unrealized guys like us. We speak of 2015 like it was last year still in our creative endeavors. haha. fkkkkkk

I'm a music teacher, and I'm always encouraging my students (and myself) to make music and write songs for nobody but themselves. My classical training has given me so many wonderful aspects of my identity as a singer, composer, and arranger, but I've struggled to translate some of those theoretical bits and bobs into a song-writing process that's accessible for everyone. You are my new favourite resource for songwriting. Love the clear explanations, the natural process that unfolds, and the vulnerability you encourage in just messing around and embracing the content. Honestly, cannot wait to explore your channel more. You're on to something, man. Thanks for sharing! X
Holly- wow, I am humbled by your comment! Thank you for your kindness. It's an honor to be a fellow song-maker and educator alongside you. If there's ever anything I can be of help with, don't hesitate to reach out. Hope it's a great weekend 👊🏻
Question for the music teacher in you, 7:20 he talks about categories of melodies, or shapes and pathways of melodies. Which part of learning music theory would help with creating and arranging these melodies? Is it called arrangement? Total newbie question 😅
I knew about the gibberish method but I never thought about thinking of melodies in shapes. That idea is killer
Nice! That was a game-changer for me as well - glad this was helpful 👊🏻
You are great at explaining things man. I've been making beats and samples as a hobby for almost a decade now, watching beat tutorials since guys with white boards were explaining what leases were. The good old Soundclick days lol. You have impeccable delivery of insightful information, the metaphors, the positive and fearless attitude, the content. Just keep going with your channel, I really think you will go somewhere with it. And this is my first time watching a video of yours, so that speaks volumes 🔥
Sicko Pierce - I don't take that lightly man, thank you. And mad respect for being in the game that long! Pumps me up knowing this was helpful, I plan to keep them coming 👊🏻
thinking of melodies as shapes is the best advice i've gotten in music
Appreciate that! I know it sure helped me too 👊🏻
This is one of the best videos i found on writing melodies so far! Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom 😄
I'm humbled Deren! Thank you for your kind words. It fires me up, knowing this helped you 🙏🏻
This video is amazing man. So incredibly helpful to break it all down into something that’s fun and enjoyable that you can play with until you discover what fits the best for you. Sometimes I’ve felt so much pressure and it’s seemed so daunting to sit down and come up with the whole thing in one session. And this is giving permission to play, break it down, and do it in a way that keeps it fun and inspiring. Thanks so much for making this video !!!
This is brilliant! It’s not only given me inspiration to keep going but also opened me up to trying out a new flow!
Woo! Love it - cheers to many catchy melodies this year!
Great tutorial ! It is very inspiring to see the process. And I like your comments about the attitude, how the attitude is key, shutting down the inner critic and all that. I did not realize how much this was a problem for me.
Good video here brother. Was struggling with Melodie’s for a particular song of mine and just finally figured one out I love just by mixing and matching using your technique, Really appreciate you dude.

The idea of using auto tune as a reference so that your real vocals sound as good as they can of instead of using it to make meh vocals into something somewhat usable is something I never thought of
That was great

Wow you’re really good at this. You kinda reminded me of Charlie Puth. Thanks for the vid really helped me when you said make patterns with the melody

Ok for real. I have been looking for this exact tutorial to help me with writing a vocal melody. There was so much information here, you could have 10 videos.😊 ill have to watch this a few time. Thank you so much for this!
A question! Im writing a vocal melody for a rock song recorded in open G, are you suggesting i should only sing g,b,d, notes? Thanks!!
Thankful this was helpful! Just take it a step at a time, you've got this 👊🏻 And to be honest, I don't focus much on notes as much as feel... so I'd encourage you that if it sounds good, it sounds good!
Great stuff, man! Glad I found your channel. Can you share what waves vocal plugins you’re using in this video. I know it was a Waves CLA plug-in but is it part of a package or is it a specific one? Thanks!!
Appreciate it man! Thankful this was helpful - and I'm using the Waves CLA Vocals plugin. It's part of the CLA package, but also sold separately on the Waves website (last I checked 👊🏻)
Amazing video
Thanks for hanging- happy melody hunting!

Big thanks - honored to have you! 👊🏻
Damn when u was recording I was literally hyping u up istg😂I feel u when u b feelin those melodies
EPIC 🤣 let's gooo! 🙏🏻
Yes, I'd agree that generally the verses contain more detail and the chorus is more of that broad "sum-up." They both further and tell the story in different ways, just like a bridge or pre chorus. All these parts help convey the story lyrically and musically. Fun stuff! What does sum up mean for music Nathan?
For me, I'll use the phrase "sum-up" when referring to one of the jobs the chorus has. Generally, the chorus quite literally "sums up" the feeling, concept and point of the whole song.
@@NathanEswine what Jonathan Byrd said about sum up was that Sum up means when you say everything again in a short way. Like at the end of Star Wars, you could sum up by saying, “it was a struggle but the Jedi won.”
@@NathanEswine make sense Nathan.
@@NathanEswine it’s luke too.

@@NathanEswine happy new year 🎉 ✨
Thanks for the video. May i know what plugins was that JX3P Pad was? The synth sound, where do i find it in Logic?
Slate Digital’s ANA synth!
EASY WAY FOR ME--
step one- read some fiction that has a character who writes songs in it OR search up the lyrics to a song that you haven't heard before
step two- read the lyrics included. your brain will often come up with a melody to fit it
step three- use the melody and change the lyrics, because technically it came from your head so its an original melody
edit- obviously use a different format for the lyrics or it will seem as though you copied
Fascinating! Peaked my interest… I’m gonna have to try this. Love hearing fellow songwriters methods! Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻👊🏻
great vid

THANKYOUUUUUUUU
Got you RIFOFO! Thankful this was helpful 🤘🏻🤘🏻
ALSO THIS IS FUCKING KILLER MAN YOU ON FIREE
This is a such a good video but also it’s sad for me I don’t use intruments,I can do poetry and just natural water flow and nature and natural real life sound and I can turn it into song or melodies 😅but alth all that I don’t have those professional music gadgets I only have my phone and an app
Have you experimented with any kinds of loops or samples? Pre-created bits of music that you could assemble yourself might be a great starting point! I even think GarageBand for iPhone lets you use loops :)
Hello bro pls where can i get this beat. It's fire and i got a vibe to it
Hey man! Appreciate that. It'll come out early 2023, I'm going to turn it into a finished song and make videos through that process teaching how I do each step. Stay tuned and have a great new year!
Which part in your honest opinion tells a story verse or chorus and also according to what sky jordxn said about his jack on song structure why the chorus gives you the story or why does the hook aka the chorus gives you the story according to his CZcams video on vocal melody hack how to structure a song 🎵 song structure formula and also according to what 12tone said about the anatomy of a song for his song structure video why the chorus it often tells a short, abstract version of the story, but the verse they tell the actual story?
What's the software you are using?
holy sh*t i want this stems on my email for train mix and master. Is Lit bro!!!
Big thanks man! Glad you dig 🙏🏻
What software are you using there i cannt rlly come up with text.... ;( but im cooking
I’m using Logic Pro X here! But any DAW will do 🤘🏻🤓🤘🏻
Good
Glad this was helpful Loviolence!
When you were recording gibberish, were you saying real words? It was really good
Awesome question Keana! So, yes and no 🤣. No- because I'm not actively thinking about singing real words and forming sentences... but yes- because I'm singing things that SOUND like they could be words, through phonetics, syllables, tonality, etc. So during the process, sometimes a concrete word or phrase will in fact slip out! Best 👊🏻
I suck at hearing lyrics in music, so your gibberish is basically how I hear most music lol
🤣 ah man - makes for some interesting interpretations!
Yooo I mess with it fr
🔥🙏 appreciate it!
Could you recommend the autotune that you use? is it free? and can it wrok in reaper DAW?
In this tutorial I used "Antares Auto-Tune." It WILL work in Reaper, but it is not free. I believe Reaper comes with its own Auto-Tune plugin though... called ReaTune? Have you messed with that? 👊🏻
7:29 regarding the timestamp portion of video, you're singing gibberish and labeling them in your head as different patterns. Does anybody know what part of music theory this actually is? And which part of learning music theory will help with finding, labeling and arranging vocal melodies?
Like in the video, I'm not deep in music theory - but curious if anyone does know though! 👊🏻
You’re an awesome 😎 CZcams channel.
Appreciate it Luke, thanks for being here! 👊
@@NathanEswine np 😉 Nathan.
That one jibberish take could be a hit today lol
🤣 oh man, jibberish for the win!
I'm also a song writer and recording Artiste but I find it difficult to write catchy hook and chorus. Wish I could get help from you.
Chorus melodies can be difficult, hang around- more content in this area is coming soon!
My problem is I keep singing the exact chords I’m playing I can’t get my head out of singing the same notes if that makes sence. My Melodie’s are boring
This is a real thing! Something that helped me was coming up with melody ideas on the instrument I’m playing before trying to come up with them with my voice… play with your instrument if that feels more natural to discover the notes your voice could then sing off of 🤘🏻🤘🏻
which part of chord that on loop, is it chorus or verse when singing the gibberish?
What's up TRAWAAZ! I was singing the gibberish over an initial vibe that I came up with (music elements + rhythm elements) in order to "capture" as many vocal melodies as possible. Some might be used for verses, some for choruses, bridges, etc. So, the music you heard on loop wasn't structured into verses & choruses yet. But I have a hunch I'll use what was on loop as the main music and drums for the verses! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@NathanEswine ah cool! thanks nathan! yeah because 1. Dave Growl said, "when make music start from the Chorus" haha so I thought maybe its the Chorus 2. It's cool if it looping on Verse and then going forward. Your Tutorial and method rocks man! thanks!
Sorry to ask, which DAW is this?
No worries! I'm using Logic Pro X
i was writing a song today, I used this technique ever since i started writing music and my inner critic made me give up because i couldn’t come up with anything i liked
Ah! Thanks for being so honest - that inner critic can be a menace sometimes. Don't give up! Come back at it after a little rest 👊🏻
