Best advice, but only IF you are sticking with the C2Duo and Windows 10 for the next 3 years (support ends in 2025):
    > Max out the RAM at the fastest speed your motherboard supports (fill up all 4 slots or, if your motherboard only has 2, then fill all 2 slots)
    > Invest in an SSD to serve as Windows' boot drive. You can also install just your most-used apps on there so they also benefit from the speed boost.
    > Upgrade the HDD to a SATA III, 7200 RPM (speed), and treat yourself to a higher capacity. I suggest partitioning the drive into 2 or 3 partitions. One for apps that you know don't really need the speed (ie. non-games), one for files/downloads, and maybe one dedicated partition to serve as a shared folder for other computers in your network, or if you ever choose to dual-boot with Linux (Ubuntu, Pop OS or Linux Mint).
    > De-bloat Windows 10. Microsoft has so much unneeded crap that they include on a "clean install" of the OS, it's just absurd. De-bloating will make life easier for the C2Duo, for sure.
    > Physically clean out the inside of your case to remove dust, and perform cable management (tidy-up the cables with zip-ties or Velcro straps) so the cpu fan and heatsink can BREATHE easier. The C2Duo is a 65 Watt chip, if I remember correctly, but it can still run hot and slow down if it can't breathe.
    > Consider installing Linux, especially when Windows 10 support ends. I think you'll find that your 10-13 year old PC will likely still have life for another 8-10 years as a 64-bit Linux machine, if you install a light-weight distribution of Linux.
    > DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR OLD WINDOWS INSTALL MEDIA (ie. a Windows 10 DVD disc or USB flash drive)! If you have older game titles, there's no guarantee that they'll run or even be compatible on newer versions of Windows, let alone newer hardware. For this reason it makes sense to keep your old Windows 10 PC around, to serve as a 'retro' gaming PC.

actually, if you have dual channel (and not quad channel), using just 2 slots is faster than using 4
...but you also can't have as much ram with just 2 slots

      >”Upgrade the HDD to a *SATA III”*
nope that’s not how it works, you can’t change the SATA bus on the motherboard to take full advantage of a newer revision. unless of course, you buy a new motherboard which at that point buy a newer computer

    • @Chr1S1986
      @Chr1S1986 Před rokem

With the maturity of SSDs now I wouldn't bother with the HDD on an older Core2 system - since the I/O controllers and interfaces are 15+ years old. Invest in a dedicated NAS and keep the slow reliable stuff in that! As others have mentioned, most 775 boards had SATA2 and so the cheapest SSDs saturate it immediately.

Just stumbled on this video after we cleared out our oldest remaining office desktops built back in 07/08. We sold them all off with Windows 10 22H2 Pro installs fully working and responsive.
Amongst the Core2 we found that the 1066+ FSB systems were more than good enough for a useful system (E6600+ were great). As long as they had 2 GB of at least DDR2-677 they were fine, only bottlenecked by the horrendous SATA2 I/O speed. Add a cheap SSD and casual users wouldn't notice been a modern Celeron laptop and Core2 under light loads. In fact, the Q6600 was absolutely on par with the old Vostros we had with i3-3220s in them (which regularly sell second hand for Windows 10 machines).
Down at 800 MHz FSB it became a bit difficult, an E4600 system with 2 GB idled fine, but was quickly overwhelmed with multiple task loads. Looking back, I'd say the minimum spec for Windows 10 is a good dual core 800+ FSB equivalent, with 2 GB and an SSD. But that's not a smooth and nice windows 10!
I've still got one here, an E6600 on a DQ45CB board with 8 GB of DDR2-800 and it's only pegged at 100% when the .net Framework runs the optimiser or windows update and the malware services fight for dominance

I can confirm that Windows 10 can run, but it's not as snappy and responsive due to the aging hardware.
I installed it on my E7300, 4GB DDR2 ram, 120GB HDD, and GT 730. My GPU was carrying the system. It can play 2D indie games and older AAA titles like Skyrim.
It would probably be better with 8GB DDR3 and a SATA SSD.

@nitz vision Windows 10 should run decently well on that computer. I don't think you will have much lag on Google Chrome overall. Also, could you tell me what you mean when you say you don't have a graphics card?

cheap build is not suitable for gaming man, if you really want play pubg at low setting, you atleast try get some gtx 750 ti or rx460 ...this is the minimum requirement for gpu and for cpu you need a 4 core i3/ryzen 3 (new one) or i5 2th gen or newer gen... ram 8gb is good enough but more is better... I advise you, dont cheap on your pc, there is no such things of bullet prove gaming pc exist.. especially the potato one
