Fine Art Photography WHAT A FIND!

- In this video, I create Fine Art images at Happisburgh Beach in Norfolk.
A couple of weeks ago, I headed south on a short photography road trip. My initial goal was to photograph the incredibly gorgeous Happisburgh Lighthouse. Not only did I complete my goal but I think I managed to capture some of my favourite landscape photography images of the year. All will be revealed in next week's video.
Whilst I was there, something caught my eye. Hundreds of old supports or stanchions sat nicely sat in the sea. I couldn't believe how amazing they looked. Better still, as a fine art landscape photographer, they were just what I love photographing.
Apart from the scare I had at getting cut off by the incoming tide, I think it's fair to say, I loved every minute of my time photographing the area. As you might be able to tell in the video 😁😁
I spent the next 3 days in and around the area creating more fine art images. I believe some of them are even better than the ones in this video.
I also met up with one of my favourite UK fine art photographers. Somebody I draw a lot of inspiration from and if you don't already know him, I'm sure you will do too! I'll keep you guessing for a couple of weeks.

Fantastic video and super photos
Great vid Gary. Recognised the posts in the thumbnail. Lucky to have Happisburgh down the road from me😀
Hi gary just been watching the video over and over again after a fantastic day out with you many thanks very much appreciated looking forward to the next one very much
Stunning. Absolutely Stunning.
Thank you! Cheers! 👍👍
Used to visit this beach frequently as a child/teenager; these used to be beautifully maintained sea defences, but that needed work towards the end of the 80’s, there were wooden steps built in to them at regular intervals. You could sit either side of them (beach or cliff side), lots of people used to sit cliff side as the sea defences worked as windbreaks. There used to be a massive steep concrete road/ramp that ran down to the beach (where the dead end road now is, where you now turn right into the “new” car park).
Towards the bottom of the ramp there were steps that let you access either side of the cliff area behind the sea defences.
It is appalling to see the total destruction of the area, from what was a perfectly maintained set of set defences.
Currently there is much controversy about where (further inland) to move the “new” car park to, as the sea gets ever nearer 😢😢
Funny I was watching Life of Brian yesterday & the posts have reminded me of the crucifixes! What a subject! Fantastic fine art images & vid as usual Gary top class 👍🏼
Braw photies Gary 👏👏
Just found your channel and really enjoying it. Lucky to have Happisburgh about 20 minutes from my door.
Welcome aboard! 👍👍
Beautifully haunting image
Thank you 👍👍
@@GaryGough welcome 🙂
Lovely shots. This is why I've been going back twice a week for well over a decade now. If you get cut off, just head to Walcott and come back along the cliff. It's about a 2 mile walk. The wooden revetments are the remains of the 1950's sea defences, and the concrete blocks were the base of a tall set of steps at the base of the cliffs. The difference I've seen in 13 years of photographing this place is astounding.
Cracking Video as Ever Gary, but seriously you Great Jessie, walk back to Walcott and then by road to Happisburgh, nobody dies or even gets their feet wet. 6" of water never killed anybody unless they were stood on. ;-) We Holidayed in Walcott last year and had the privilege to capture some lovely sunrise/sunset shots a mile or so from your position. Even managed a few "Lady in Red" shots.. The possibilities for any style of Photography are boundless, such a beautiful place, I hope to return soon. Although, the hoards of "Goughies" will probably make a minimalist shot more difficult now. 🙂
Be Well and Thank you.
Really think with your drama skills you should be auditioning for a role in Coronation Road. ;-)
lol The water ent over my wellies 😁😁 I know what you mean though lol
Gary these are amazing
Cheers Terry 👍👍
Lovely black and white fine art, would you consider showing us how you edit some of these long exposures in black and white?
Kind regards
fabulous
Awesome Gary
I LOVED your energy in this amazing video! Such a good vibe and such amazing pieces of art🍻
Thank you so much!! 👍👍
The two large rectangular concrete blocks that you were near on the beach used to support the steps that allowed you down to the beach from the camping field above with a walk way that was approximately 30ft in length. Its frightening how the sea has claimed the land over the past few years.
Amazing results form your day.
WOW fantastic great editing Awesome
Thanks 🤗
Such is the power of the sea resulting in the destruction of these sea defences, but what a great location for your style of fine art photography.
There's more to come too Paul. Cheers as always xx
More than you're Photography.. which is by the way a piece of Art. I like your enthusiasm that you show in each and every video. Thanks for sharing Gary!
Happisburgh village was at the top of those cliffs. Over time the sea closed in and ate away at the cliffs, Collapsing all. There used to be a very large mansion or hotel on the edge of that cliff at one time. Probably no more, Caravans were all up and down the Norfolk coast. The North Sea is a ferocious beast. Glad you went as I truly enjoyed this video
Over the past twelve months, I lost interest in my photography. Your photographs lit the flame of renewal. Breath-taking, beautiful compositions. I'm bringing out my camera again! My creative juices are flowing. Please continue to inspire.
Then all my hard work was well worth it. Go get em! 👍👍
Luv,,,,,,,Your way of SEEING the World !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What every fine art photographer needs: a 10-stop ND and a boat
I think you are more of a maker of pictures than a taker of pictures! your finished Fine Art pictures are mind blowing at times.....Thank you for showing them to us....oh do be careful as you said mother nature has the ruling hand no matter how good you are!!!!!
Cheers as always Des 👍👍
Gary all I can say is amazing. Thank you for bringing that scene to life.
Very kind, cheers 👍👍
I just love your videos Gary, wowww the tide sure came in fast on you yet again. Makes us all appreciate the power of Mother Nature when out taking amazing photos. Keep the videos coming.
Superb
Can you please explain the process of taking this photo? It's amazing.
I love that alternative image at the end with the moody cloud detail
Absolutely wonderful results with your images, as always of course!
I am glad you didn't get cut off and got home safe and sound!
Thanks again! Cheers Neil 👍👍
Simply Stunning Gary, those images are out of this world , The black and white version at 11.57 is my pick, it is almost haunting! Thanks as always for sharing. Gary remember safety first.
Simply outstanding and inspirational. Love your work and videos.
Thank you so much! 👍👍
You have shown us a new vision .Thank you so much
Cheers 👍👍
I visited Happisburgh for the first time back if Feb. Un fortunately when I arrived that part of the beach was cut off so I had to make do with another section. Definitely on my To Do list next time I'm there. Lovely shots Gary.
Cheers xx
Absolute inspiration with fine art videos Gary. I absolutely love them. 👍
'Time & Tide wait for no man' -Geoffrey Chaucer 15th Century. Gary brings it up to date, but it didn't dampen your enthusiasm.
😁😁 Definitely not 😁😁
I’ve told you! One of these day you and the sea will have a battle, there’s only one winner 😅 beautiful photography! As always a cracking video! Congratulations on the viral! Well deserved.
Beautiful photos, next time bring an inflatable raft.
Love it :)
Just brilliant location and images showing Fine Art Photography. Thanks for sharing this with us Gary

Great images Gary! Thanks for taking me along!
My pleasure 👍👍
WOW! How fantastic is that. No wonder you were so excited and reluctant to leave the area. Worth the risk.
Great format!!! Not too much Bla Bla Bla on vlog…but a lot of images and locations….GREAT GREAT GREAT
Hello Gary!! My first comment. You have given me SUCH inspiration to go out and emulate your style. Curious what lens you are using in this video? I know that you normally use a w/a and this is different. Thanks again!!!
Thank you for these videos. They are inspiring me to explore my town in a new way to find hidden gems like you find in your area.
Another amazing video and photo at the end of it. Plz stay safe, we want to come on more of your courses and days out! 😉

Gary, what a sky! Glad to see that you got carried away with excitement.
But you do seem to be pushing against high tides 🤣
Cheers Chris 👍👍
Fabulous Gary, I'm thinking a winter visit there would be good.
You certainly take the odd risk just to get a photo .... good on yer Gary !! Tis scary when you know the unstoppable is coming for you. Brilliant video and thanks for taking.
Cheers 👍👍
Well, that location was right up your boulevard. Very nice.
Cheers 👍👍
Great photos Gary. Sometimes , you have to get wet in order to achieve perfection!
Absolutely 😁😁 Cheers 👍👍
Mr. Fine Art has struck again. 😊 Beautiful images and a great reminder to always watch your back when out at the sea.
Many thanks! 👍👍
Just love your creative style
You must suffer for your art, eh? 😉. HlD you made it out ok. Beautiful photos. Thanks for the video!
Next time you go there Gary, take a rope ladder and throw it down the high bank/cliff. Then you can stay as long as you like.
Cracking idea :) 👍👍
This was such a beautiful and inspiring video. Really great atmosphere and really nice pictures! I haven't seen many of your videos yet, but I'll catch up. Thanks for the great video! :)
Exceptional work, well done Gary, and thank you for the constant inspiration
Cheers Jason 👍👍
very nice Gary. I can't recall seeing any images from this particular part before and the B&W fine art style worked perfectly. Glad you made it back along the beach too
Cheers Scotty 👍👍
Outstanding set of images Gary
Bloody hell that came in fast. Beautiful place and like you say its a shame but mother nature showing who is in charge. Need to arrange our collaboration when u get a mins rest. Know you are exceptionally busy. Fantastic photo's mate
Cheers 👍👍
Stunning images Gary. Another cracking video 👍👍
Many thanks 👍👍
Another great video Gary.
No wonder you had to stay there to photograph the structure's, they were awesome
Absolutely stunning image's mate.
Glad you got back safely.
It's a shame that the sea defences are just left to mother nature, but it will bite everyone there one day and they will be sorry.
Cheers Tim 👍👍
Absolutely stunning 😍
Thank you! Cheers! 👍👍
Another brilliant video, mixed with a little drama😂, great images!😀
Wouldn't be the same without drama 😁😁
Morning Gary I love watching your videos, unfortunately I am not a landscape photographer but would love to learn. Would you or any of your subscribers be able to give me some advise, I understand that you work on your lowest ISO. Can you please advise on what filters to use. thank you very much Mark from Australia😀
Hi Mark, Look back through my videos. You'll learn everything you'll ever need there 👍👍
@@GaryGough awesome thank you I will check out those videos. Love your videos 👍👍
Super video Gary - really enjoyed it. A lot to learn about choosing compositions and certainly a lot to learn as to how easy it is to become distracted. Glad that in your case all ended well. Fab photos and brilliant editing in photoshop.
Cheers Keith xx
Lovely
Excellent timing, off to Norwich to buy a drone on Tuesday and staying overnight, guess where I'll be heading afterwards? Will take great care with the tide!
If the barley is still in the field, make time to photograph the lighthouse too, it's incredible 👍👍
@@GaryGough will do, also got Boardman's windpump on the itinerary for sunset, time for Photopills and a bit of planning, oh and a check on the tide times!!
I do the same ... All the time , here chasing structures in the Tides of Puget Sound .
Beautiful work, Gary. These have such a dream-like quality to them. Simplicity at its finest!
Many thanks! 👍👍
Superb as always Gary!
Cheers 👍👍
Went there last year I didn’t take any shots because I thought it was too messy 🙈
Well you have just proved me wrong, I need to look beyond the scene and picture what I want the shot to look like as you have said many times in your videos Gary.
You live and learn 😁
You have to go back, you can't let it beat you 😁😁
@@GaryGough one day I will, did you venture to see the seals at Horsey beach ?
Gary it would be nice to see some of the images on the back of your camera just after you've taken them, as well as the photoshop versions. Lots of us don't use the likes of photoshop/lightroom etc, so it would be nice to see some untouched images. Thanks in advance, ATB.
I do show them sometimes. Gret point though, thank you 👍👍
Yep it’s a cracking site, “super exciting” Def colour preferred rather than arty farty B&w.
Cheers as always Mark xx See you soon 👍👍
@@GaryGough - 👍 - looking forward to it
Great video, Gary stunning pictures as usual, did you not have the drone so you could see around the corner? 😅 Put your enthusiasm for your craft is very contagious.
great work Gary
Thank you 👍👍
I am trying to find where is this amazing spot
www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop/
Thanks👍
Thank you so much 👍👍
Good shot Gary. You make the edits look so so easy wish I could use photoshop like that. I haven't got a clue. 😢 bet it was scary nearly getting cut off. 😢
It was very scary. It's always easy to laugh it off but my initial thought was... "oh s**t" 😁😁
A great video Gary. Would you mind telling me where you got the filter pouch that you wrap around your tripod please?
It's quite expensive... nisioptics.co.uk/product/product-4x5-65-soft-cinema-filter-pouch/
Hope that helps 👍👍
Great images Gary, great to see you down in my neck of the woods in Norfolk. I quite often end up in Happisburgh as there's always something to capture
It's an incredible place as you say. Cheers Nick 👍👍
Absolutely brilliant video Gary, and amazing images, love them
Cheers Chris 👍👍
The path at the top from the lighthouse had pill boxes along the walkway, heavy erosion brought the walkway and boxes down on the beach, very sad indeed, I've only been at High tide , so only photographed the lighthouse itself, and the rocks with waves crashing up ,
I bet it's an impressive sight during a storm. Not so much fun for those who are effected of course :(
Believe the wordwork are old sea defences, they have long given up trying to fight against nature.
Oh cool or not so cool anymore :(
you keep going to the, 'iffy' place's, one day your going to drop a b*****k,as always great photographs, and an excellent video.
Maybe one day! 😁😁 You're probable right btw 😁😁
Was this Monday ?
18th July
LOL that was fun -- you could have taken just one more shot --- not. As you say that location you could work for hours.
It's that "one more shot" that's gonna get me in bother one day :)
great shots, but I do not really like the straight on shot, like that perpendicular framing, I much prefer to use the diagonals, it gives more depth. obviously, there are huge limitations in landscape photography and one can't always compose in that fashion
I know what you mean 👍👍
