The WORST design challenge was the Canada one. They gave them trash to use, and complained that the outfits looked like trash. That whole season is a nightmare.
Canada season 1 is really a wild ride, but I would recommend a watch cause the Queens and lipsyncs make it very worthy

My least favorite is makeover, i feel like its where production shows its cards and the most riggory happens. Also the guilt the people they remake is real and idk its messy
Like there's only really been one where I can't really criticise it, which is Canada 2. It's just such a good episode, particularly the bonds between Pythia & Apollo and Icesis and Makayla

I hated the makeover challenge after Crystal Methyd didn't win it. That was literally the best makeover of all time and they gave the win to a polished but generic makeover.

I felt that in Season 7 Shakespeare challenge. I’m a theatre kid who did Shakespeare and it’s a lot. I think they didn’t give them enough time cause memorizing a Shakespeare script is much harder than a normal script. I cringed for the queens, cause I know they were just as confused and frustrated at it.
Also you need to understand what Shakespeare is doing and if you don’t then you’re not gonna get it
Ya that challenge was such a mess. Imo, Ru and Michelle were at fault there by not giving them enough time to prepare and were stressed out the whole time.
I felt very sad about it because I feel that a Shakespeare inspired challenge has a lot of potential being fun and succesful
Also reason why I don't think it's in the competition for first is because we had 2 teams, Romeo and Juliet team was successful and really showed out because they had a strong leader who understood the material and got the group together (Max). And the mess team was entertaining to watch how bad they were. Like I will always laugh at Pearl bumping into the set pieces and Kandy or Kennedy's headpiece falling into the cauldron, Jasmine messing all her lines, everyone just being confused. Like it's so fucking bad it becomes funny to watch.
It might have been a mess but it’s an iconic, memorable, and entertaining mess. Some challenges are both bad and BORING, which is worse in my opinion.
I hate hate HATE when people disregard Choreo/Physical challenges. Far too often on Drag Race the dancing/trained Queens only get to shine if they are about to go home in a lip sync or are lucky enough to do a girl group challenge that allows for choreography. It is never weighed as equally as impressive as being a comedy or fashion Queen. Which just is not fair. Especially considering in a typical drag show the dancing queens are the highlight.

Agreed. If we're gonna say that the physical challenges ain't fair then we need to start disregarding every flip, split, and dip that queens do during lip-syncs cause those aren't fair either. Not every queen is trained, after all. They definitely should have better training/more time to prep for them though, so injuries are less likely.
I feel like as long as the worst that could happen is bad performance I'm fine with it, but if they put the safety of the queens into risk by making them do unsafe things they need more training for, then it shouldn't be happening.
Like the cheerleading could be dangerous because their lack of training on doing lifts etc. I love the dance challenges or performance challenges, but like that had unnecessary risks that would have no payoff.
And in the 2 ones where the queens got hurt, Yvie knew she could do a head spring, it was just unfortunate that the one time she did it she hurt herself. The same with Eureka, she has did a split like that before, but it was just that one time she hurt herself.
The Draglympics was a huge flop! Each queen should have picked/been assigned to an 'event' instead of one big group performance
Silky should have been disqualified for doing the leg thing with her hands.

The choreo challenges seem wildly unfair. Choreographed dancing is a skill that you really need to have specifically trained, like singing. And with the exception of season 6's Musical (where only Courtney and Adore were in the running to win that challenge), they've never really marked someone down for having poor vocals, or not being a trained singer. But they really love marking people down for not being good dancers.
(And before you say "what about sewing challenges?"; hot glue has won design challenges)
the ONLY 2 queens i remember from the Season 13 ball is Utica, and Symone but only utica's 1st and 3rd, and Symone's second. Utica was honestly the most memorable, at least to me, which is why it STILL baffles me that she lost
Edit: i also remember lala's bags but i was trying to keep it somewhat positive by expressing i only remember 3 good looks, and Symone's second look was this shiny pink suit with bright red hair, i just really love that color combo

I do agree that the makeover is one of the challenges that could be retired. The queens bring all their outfits from home (except when they have a partner whose body shape is too different from theirs), which is sometimes just pretty dresses but nothing more, but most of all, the judging is soo inconsistent. Sometimes queens win because of resemblance, sometimes because of concept, sometimes because of overall beauty,... doesn't really make sense.
That's exactly why they won't get rid of it. It's the perfect late game challenge to judge completely subjectively to get rid of whoever production is done with.
... I gotta admit it makes sense. But it's frustrating x)
Or they could give them time and make it a design challenge like it used to be early on. I mean the makeover gave us Naomi and Kim Chi's looks for the WIzard of Oz, the delightful dementia that is the Conjoined Twins challenge, Roxxy and Detox looks from the Army Makeover. And also some great performances from the people being made over, from Janet the Planet to several men feeling every single oat while in drag like Manila's partner in S3, Miz Cookie, Wintergreen, and Roxxy's partner in S5.
Yeah please keep the makeovers.

the judging is always the worst but the episodes are some of the best. Having the queens interact with the guests have given us some of the best moments of all time on the show #IKilledJudyGarland
the weird thing about the commercial challenge from season 4 is… i don’t get why sh*ron won… i didn’t understand. i think (tinfoil hat moment) sh*ron won because of the fight with jaremi, but i totally thought willam or chad were gonna win that

The Dida Ritz lip sync outshines everything in that episode for me lmao I couldn't name a single other thing that happened, especially the challenge!

I wish we got another makeover like season 13 where queens make eachother over, just with sane judging this time. Its honestly one of my favourite challanges in the whole series, and all of the werk room chats and queens getting to know eachother is so wholesome

I think it’s okay that some challenges are unbalanced, like the drag-lympics thing. You could say design challenges are unfair to queens who don’t sew, or song-writing challenges are unfair to queens who aren’t musically minded. I only care when the challenge is made unfair, like the divas lip sync (Mariah Carey and Julie Andrews are by default the best concepts for that challenge)
Season 9 princess and sidekick was so fun! And it gave us the iconic Linda Evangelista read
you're so right about clapback, it's infuriating that we have a shea coulee verse that is basically incoherent because of bad audio mixing
Season 15s acting challenge was one of my favorites. But Tim and Eric’s shows are my type of humor. I even played the episode for my brother who grew up watching their shows. He found a lot of the parts very funny. So I’m sure there were some people who enjoyed the episode for that type of humor.
It was leaps and bounds better than other seasons acting challenges like season 12's
They could also have the live audience be the people who work on set. Like anyone who doesn’t work on the camera, Lights, or sound could be used. They would be people who are in the bubble and not having the risk of people leaking things about the season. Seems kinda reasonable to me and there being an audience would probably make the queens performances shine a lot more.
The way Chad's birthday decoration-ass dresses and long bellies were just glossed over on the S4 makeover challenge will always be so strange for me. Chad looks beautiful and polished the entire season and then she shows up wearing that 💀
To be fair tho Sharon and Kenya looked far worse lmao, even Phi Phi’s makeover, altho it’s def the best, was still above average imo
I never knew how bad the lighting in season 8 like that is some seizure inducing moments
The talent show from DRDU1 takes the cake as one of the worst talent shows
Other challenges I would say are rough would be Draglexa from UK3, Snatch Game from Season 14 and the Pageant Challenge from Philippines 1

You are very talented in just creating these vids, writing, editing and posting these on your own. The Shakespeare challenge in S7 might be horrible all around, but it was ENTERTAINING to watch the trainwreck. There have been many other challenges that are bad and just boring to sit through, which in my opinion is worse. If it’s gonna be bad, make it memorable and entertaining.
Yeap. I can watch that episode over and over with Pearl struggling on purpose and Laquisha Kianny.. Its so funny. They tried to do the same with Season 15 Snatch game and it was booOoooing and horrendus.
@@Rocko8000 Season 15 Snatch Game I believe they just tried to edit it to make it unfunny so they could do the whole lip sync smackdown thing. I don’t think some of the queens were as bad as the edit tried to make us think and a lot of the decent jokes got cut. And I don’t think Pearl was struggling on purpose, I think Pearl thought she was doing a good job and it was actually the complete opposite lol.
I actually like acting challenges, in concept. Acting is one skillset that queens can use to break into the mainstream. Drag Race certainly has its fair share of actors, from Peppermint and Jiggly to Milan, Jinkx, Willam, Rosé and others. Even Trixie and Katya appeared in films and commercials, and they’re not what most people consider as actor queens. I just think that the producers should switch up the writing of acting challenges, so that it’s not just parody and self-reference all the time.
Jack, no matter how often you upload content, I still consistently love what you put out and thoroughly enjoy every video you create. Every time I see that you’ve posted a new video, I have to watch it immediately and I find your commentary to be the most fair and reasonable out of any Drag Race content creators I’m subscribed to. It’s understandable that real life sometimes gets in the way, and that motivation wanes at times…I think that’s totally normal, so I get it, I really do. Just wanted you to know that I love what you do and I always look forward to whatever you create. ❤

The worst ever challenge for me happened in Drag Race Mexico. There was an Acapulco Shore (Mexican version of Jersey Shore) themed rusical, probably made because it's a paramount plus reality show. I don't know a single person that watches it and bc of that I didn't understand anything that happened on the musical. It felt insufferably long and what made it worse was that one of my favs was eliminated too!
DeJa's Snatch game made me fall in love with her sooooo hard! She was just so enthusiastic in the midst of everybody bombing around her. Laughing so hard I was in tears. I loved her for that. I still do!

Wow I was genuinely surprised by your pick for "Worst Rusical", but only because Pharmarusical was so unmemorable I forgot all about it. It's not even bad in an entertaining way, it just gets completely memoryholed away.

thanks Jack! What I love about your videos, besides all the work you put in, is the visuals (clips from challenges from different seasons of DR) and how they contrast between eachother. I love seeing how Drag Race looked in older seasons contrasted with newer, more recent ones. It creates a fun viewing experience where you can be listening to your insights whilst also just revelling in how much Drag Race has changed over time. I love it! It's simple but veru effective editing. Hope you feel better soon! x
I've always been neutral and never really think about most of them, but DU talent show will always just baffle me for all eternity. Just the sheer jumps of logic to justify basically all the placements aside from Scarlett Adams
I *love* the concept of the makeover and am always happy to see it, but I also completely agree that its easily the most unfair judging wise. It sucks that one of the most interesting, dynamic challenges is marred by the blatant manipulation of the queens. In general, the winner is usually fair, but the bottom is a trainwreck. Sometimes it's "we want to see strong family resemblance and yours looks too different!" and other times is "wow yours is identical and thats bad!" Production gets way too cocky with their rigging when it comes to that challenge. I mean, how many times have we seen one of the strongest in the challenge go home because of some arbitrary reason that they pulled out of nowhere?

Jack, if you like design challenges, you should definitely watch Drag Race Brasils challenge, it was by far one of the best design challenges and i’m not even kidding
season 8's singing challenge was pretty good, a right balance of own choices, different genres, and all we're pretty fair to do.

I though s13's makeover was good. I liked the idea of having to makeover each other and explore one another's drag. While I love watching the makeover itself, the judging is where it often becomes an issue. Deciding to judge the s13 queens in pairs just so they could send Denali home for mistakes made BY HER PARTNER and having her lipsync to the ONE SONG she didn't choreograph...come on.
Omg thank you for bringing up Banskie's design look; it really did steal the show for me, and going off what the edit's giving us so far, it seems Banskie might be making it pretty far in the competition, which is fine by me lol. I know this is a really off topic comment, but like, no one talks about it enough! :D
13:12 you forgot the new wave singing challenge from SEASON 8… with the ICONIC dragometry trio
I feel like they would tailer the challenges to the contestants to some degree. Black Swan when there's two feuding dancing pagent queens who happen to end up on the same team? The musical the next season with two Idol contestants playing opposing versions of the same role? It was produced, but forced more interesting reactions rather then leaving it up to fate.
I would love to see a version of the keeping it 100 design idea. But on an all winners. Like eatch winner had to re do a design challenge what was on there session and then what they made got compared to there original look and how there skills have evolved

When It comes to rigged challenges probably the 2 most rigged ones are Talent Show and Makeover, when it comes to makeover they give themselves the freedom to make any single bad detail a huge deal but I do appreciate that this later seasons to watch the makeover episode it’s a joy since they bring people that are happy to be there, AND omg talent show the biggest problem is that RuPaul and production want everything to be funny and most other talents are overlooked just because a performance made Ru laugh
Someone finally mentioned s15 Daytona Winds 2, like it is just so weird and yet, during the entire year all, I have seen were positive comments about it (maybe I was just looking at the wrong places but whatever), I'm talking about the edit btw, the queens did a great job

No season 15 acting challenge was sooooo good
7:19 dude I while watching season 15’s Daytona winds 2 I literally said “what in the tumblr shitpost is this editing?” Like imo they shouldn’t have done a 2nd one to begin with because the “comedy” came from the fact that the queens had no idea that it was a bunch of fart jokes, but on top of that the editing was no where close to a sitcom.

I love snatch game so much, it’s one of my favourite parts of dragrace!
When you do the UK3 video - everyone knows it's a mess, but I tend to find that US recappers don't get just how unpleasant it was to watch in the UK. The impact of lockdown was referenced mostly through Veronica's arc, and it was covered quite a bit in the UK2 special episode, but the UK3 queens had spent a huge amount of time in *long* lockdowns (March to June, November, January until May - I think the series was filmed in Feb/March 2021?) plus localised lockdowns that took place outside of national lockdowns. Even when we were out of lockdown, rules made it extremely difficult for any performers to perform after the pandemic started. So they were all pretty rusty, many would have suffered with isolation and they would have struggled to get outfit fittings the way that queens for any other seasons would have done (I think call-ups happened during lockdown too). Even stuff like Christmas being "cancelled" a week before the day itself for a lot of regions, after the government spent months promising that everyone would be able to spend Christmas with their loved ones!
Ru had no respect for how mentally challenging that time was for those of us living here and the challenges the queens faced in preparing for that season. I mean, she went berserk with the H&M rant after 3 weeks in isolation to get into the UK, she could have been more empathetic. so the punitive approach she took in UK3 made me - and I know a fair number of UK viewers - feel really angry and upset, as we had lived through at least some of those challenges with the queens. Sure, Drag Race wouldn't be Drag Race if judging was too soft, but it felt like Ru really sharpened her nails - double elim, no winner of episode (when the challenges were so crap and irrelevant as well) - to gag viewers, which played horribly against the context.
I've never felt such a strong ick from a season as from the middle of UK3, hugely down to Ru's cold and sour attitude, and it really lost so much of the magic that the UK franchise had held up to that time. Hope this is useful!
Not to mention that Season 3 came very quickly after Season 2 due to Covid messing up their filming schedules, I really think the short gap between filming really left production underprepared in terms of challenge ideas
Yeah that part with Naomi doing the boat challenge was so weird. When I realized she got to basically wear a dress from home during a sewing challenge 😂
I always knew the acting challenges on Drag Race were busted, but this video reminded me just how many stinkers we've had. My Best Squirrelfriend's Dragsmaid's Wedding Trip (AS3) and Sex and the Kitty Girl (AS4) stand out as the worst to me because they both came near the finale right after a dramatic elimination and completely killed all the momentum built up across the season. Then in season 13 when they made the top 5 do Henny I Shrunk The Drag Queens, it was like they hadn't learned any lessons. Fortunately the acting challenges now come in earlier, and they're better for it... but they still kind of stink (case in point: Daytona Winds).
I do wonder if even Ben and Manila could have saved those train crashes.
Clap Back also has SUCH a long chorus compared to the other Rumixes, too, which tanks the replayability and makes it feel really repetitive
I love movie bitches’ take on the makeover challenge. They’re always wishy-washy on what they want the girls to look like. Plus the fan favorite usually always goes home during this challenge.
