What is ASMR? It is both a sensation and a medium.
ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and is the current, non-scientific name given to the feeling characterized as a pleasurable tingling sensation felt in the head, scalp, back and other regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli, such as crinkling bags, hand movements, whispering, personal attention or watching someone perform a task. It's like goosebumps, but much more pleasant.
ASMR videos are meant to intentionally help induce this sensation, also referred to as "tingles", but also provide a relaxing, calming, soothing, therapeutic and even entertaining experience for the viewer.
Many people who do not experience ASMR still enjoy the videos for their calming and sleepy effect. - Zábava
James Franco was my favorite. Hope he gets an Oscar for this performance.
+SloppyPooBag You mean when he played Tommy Wiseau
Agreed! I loved how he died instantly. That should be the extent of his acting in every movie.
Dominus Satanas For real tho, weird seeing an actor such as him be in such a small role
SloppyPooBag lol literally
He was on fire.
this guy is always releasing quality material. definitely the most creative ASMRtist
a creative individual Ive come to realize, we're lucky to have him
UndercoverCracker 100% Agree!!!!
Why does Ridley Scott have a bunch of trained scientist not act like trained scientist and completely ignore all protocols and procedures down to the simple act of wearing a space suit on an alien world where foreign bacteria are a very real and possible threat
TheFireheart44 tasty, tasty plot holes!
TheFireheart44 plot progression
literally
Because that's how you write horror movies. Are you new to the genre?
Someone's been on an Alien binge!
Rift!
Sci-Fi Horror films you should watch:
Pandorum
Event Horizon
Slither
Apollo 18
Splice

Europa Report
The Last Days on Mars
Life
This is why we love this guy, I mean you could say that for any video but you know...
I really enjoyed Covenant, more than I enjoyed Prometheus. I've been an Alien fan since the first time I saw it at 11 years old and Covenant to me really gave me chills much like the old Alien films. I would even go as far as saying that it is my favourite series of movies. As for ranking I wouldn't be able to however if I had to choose Alien 3 would probably be the one I could live without :)
I didn't actually like Alien: Covenant. Felt the characters were largely forgettable and gormless Alien fodder (aside from Tennesse, and that's down to the awesomeness of Danny McBride), and the biggest problem lies with the subtier whole horror film cliche of 'smart characters doing stupid things'. The magic of the original Alien was that they didn't do anything stupid or out of what normal people would do, and that's why The Thing is the benchmark of horror films. Like, the Captain following a clearly bad David into a crypt filled with horrors and then putting his face into it puts Charlize Theron's run in Prometheus to shame!
Michael Fassbender really carried the film, which is a problem because he outclasses everyone else, even the female lead (who's fine by the way, but clearly outclassed by Fassbender); it's anecdotal, but I don't even remember anyone else's name (apart from the above). Aside from the gorgeous cinematography and special effects, I felt really disappointed by it. The first like half an hour alone was largely pointless; there was barely any character development, and it just felt extremely slow and awkward.
It had some good parts, such as when it shows Shaw's body all vivisected etc - which is what we want to see, we've seen facehuggers, and people getting torn up, chestbusted and stuff, so something new and novel is refreshing and needed.
I agree with Empire's review in which they said "It’s just a shame that one of cinema’s greatest image-makers couldn’t deliver his ideas visually" - and that's why I'm so gutted by the film; I think the story and lore behind the Xenomorph and Alien as a whole is incredible. But the recent two films just can't convey it well. I felt all Ridley Scott took from the criticism of Prometheus was "we needed more Xenomorph action." The main problems as I said was childish, stupid and ridiculous decisions made by supposedly smart scientists and military personnel.
Anyway, sorry for my rant, but I barely know anyone who's into the Alien films - I genuinely meant it last video when I said I preferred your video to the film!
Edit: I thought I'd add that I'm not a nitpicky person. I hate doing that with films, but there's a certain threshold for my suspension of disbelief which is unique to every film, and Alien: Covenant was just plain ridiculous at parts.
Agreed on the visuals. I really wish they'd used a combination of props and CGI on the aliens instead of just a big CGI fest
^ people like this actually exist
Tyler S. What? People sharing opinions?
Love your vids rift, my fav asmr artist, your seem like such a good bloke, absolute legend! Keep up the amazing work.
it was amazing. also i love your asmr videos. so soothing plus lots of variety
Such creative content, the only asmr channel I know where you get such unique content.
I find both your speaking voice and your ASMR voice equally relaxing. Thank-you for this one Rift~✨💖✨
Biggest problem with the recent Alien movies are trained professionals not acting like trained professionals. However I did like Covenant as a whole.
Really loving the Alien focused vids Uncle E! And Hudson is my favorite character! My favorite line of his: "Yeah man, but it's a dry heat!"
Alien 3 - Assembly Cut - is a masterpiece.
Dan O'Bannon who wrote the original Alien (along with the "B-52" segment of Heavy Metal and Return of the Living Dead - which he also directed) also passed a few years back. He was the one who brought Giger and Moebius onto Alien back when they were all working on Jodorowsky's Dune. Him and Moebius did a story called "The Long Tomorrow" for Metal Hurlant/Heavy Metal that was used for reference during the productions of Bladerunner, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Fifth Element.
I loved it! Makes me want to rewatch all of the old original Alien movies
I feel as if i could hold any conversation about any topic with you, whether it be controversial or not, but i must ask, who would win Alien or Predator? (The spin-off movies don't count)
British Twat It would be the predators as they were confirmed in the comics to use xenos in the rites of passage in which young predators would hunt and kill a xenomorph
To be accepted into the tribe as a "hunter" if may
That_one_CZcamsr Who_does_things Ah i've heard about that and i thought it was just a made up fan theory, cheers for the info
British Twat Depends on setting in the end. The xenomorphs are much more predatory (ironically) than the Predators, they operate under a hive-mind which is extremely uniform and concise unlike Predators. In a decrepit spacecraft, I'd imagine the xenomorph would absolutely come out on top.
Love all these Alien-videos Rift!:D
I love your asmr movie review videos! So relaxing and entertaining since we have similar movie tastes.
Artistic is definitely a good word for Alien: Covenant, and for the Alien franchise in general! It's creepy art, but it is definitely artful! I haven't seen Alien 2, 3, or Resurrection, but I'd rank the others the same way you did. I like the slow unraveling of the mystery behind the Alien organism. I also really like the fact that something as obviously beautiful as this film series is using the creation of the xenomorphs as a self-aware, meta-commentary on the creation of art. Very thought provoking.
loved alien covenant and my favorite part was the backburster scene where the one girl locked the other in with the guy while he was all seizure-like. it was so gruesome but the coolest scene imho. i felt like the cating in that part really made it scary because most people would lock that girl in their if they thought it would contain the infection (obviously it didnt). i loved how they were yelling through the glass and you could see blood spurting out of his back in the background.
Literally just got home from seeing it. Perfect timing!
I live in Springfield, PA! so cool to meet someone like you that lives around here
wish they would of showed more of the engineers
He's got a freaking face hugger!
Exploring With ASMR he did a video unboxing it. I'm not sure what it's called though
Paul that arena is just where the people had gathered to see the ships, there was a city surrounding the arena. I literally just finished it an hour ago.
Giger's name is pronounced "Geeger"/ "Geager" as in "meager".
Covenant was good, and visually incredibly stunning.
38:30 - the captain has nothing to be suspicious about David? He just saw him talking with a killer alien and after shooting it, showing clear sign of distress. Oh, well. Still, very good and relaxing video, Eph!
Annihilation with Natalie Portman is some pretty freaky sci fi horror. It really caught me off guard how good it was.
Saw the movie in the cinema this very evening. Amazing.
Love your vidoes man next time you should do a discussion on transformers the last knight give us your thoughts and opinions expressed how you felt about it but over all keep doing what your doing man your work is wonderful
You should do more discussions like this!
just watched it tonight, i thought it was a really fun mashup of alien and aliens
I named my dog Hudson after Bill Paxton died
Aliens is probably my favourite film of all time.
I also really liked covenant.
Great video! 👌🏼
Loved this video! Next we need to talk about the predator series.
The Netflix documentary on HR Giger is pretty illuminating. Shows his last days and how vast his creative abilities truly were. Also shows how hard they had to work to even get credited for the creation of the Alien character, let alone other aspects of the Alien franchise. The Temple that appears in Prometheus is Giger's unused creation from a production of Dune that never got made into film. When you see this guy's work, you just know it. Truly incredible.
I usually use this type of video as background noise, it helps me focus, but this time it actually captivated me :D I enjoyed alien but I'm late :p I've only seen 3 of them
As a not so hardcore Alien fan I enjoyed the movie for what it was. It got me interested in the story and I will now go back and watch all of the old movies.
Haven't even seen the movies but I love ER's discussion videos so I'm going to spoil EVERYTHING for myself :D. WORTH IT.
Same
Your voice is butter lol love this discussion too!
I agree ! we need more Sci Fi Horror genre film's. The Thing , Alien ....... that's all there is & they are 2 of my top 5 favorite film's of all time
I just realized your shirt was Mona Lisa and the alien head lmao. Great. I thought Prometheus might have been the superior film but this one was pretty dam fun to watch.
P.S. That albino alien that stood upright was one of the scariest things I've seen on screen in a while.
Have the same opinion of critics as ER, also try to avoid spoilers, except in the case of this video. Guess that's why I wasn't aware some people dislike Fassbinder. Very nice talk, was just thinking the other day wasn't it time for a "Let's Talk" or a Podcast? Easy to get lost in The Rift, but always nice to hear from Paul as himself, anytime. Great t-shirt, good co-host - didn't interrupt once.
I saw Alien Covenant, it was slow in the beginning but it picked up and I really enjoyed it. So no spoilers for me, and we were introduced to new aliens where they come out of you mouth and back which really scared me but in a good way. 👽👌👍👏
the explosion was random, its was the dr shaws broadcast from the alien ship that she and david escaped in that drew the colonist ship crew to investgate the planet as a possible substitute for the one they were heading to.
I just watched it so good
Hello Daddy Rift
Sp00klord Neeto please don't
Sp00klord Neeto uncle*
Hey Uniun Bru
Loved Alien Covenent, the best movie iv'e seen in a long long time. I'm a film major and was impressed with many aspects of this film.
I love this guy he is cool funny and has a great sense of humor he is just a fun guy anyone to have this guy as a dad is lucky
Just saw alien covenant tonight and I thought it was fantastic. Finally a new movie in the alien series that returns to form! (even if only slightly)
THANK YOU, UNCLE ER!!!!!
All Hail The ASMR Master 👑
I haven't seen any of the films. I need to see Alien at some point.
The man was true to his word, thumbs up
Ephemeral rift is definitely the best Asmrtist.
I saw covenant I was really excited about it! I liked it a lot but I think it would really help viewers to see Prometheus beforehand.
Rift, ever done anything with sharpening knives? I saw a video where someone was doing it but the audio was kinda muted. was pretty soothing. haven't seen any asmr tists do that as a trigger yet
Regarding the matter in lacking of Sci-fi Horror, I was happy to see Arrival and Life, both that I recommend you see if you haven't already, personally I found them entertaining and refreshing.
I enjoyed the movie quite a lot. Ranking Alien, Aliens, Covenant, Prometheus, Alien 3, Ressurection
I think the shower scene was supposed to give people a sense of hope of there actually being a happy ending for someone finally in an Alien movie, but then having them get completely shut down and for some people give a sense of dramatic irony for people that actually know horror movies and know something the characters don't. To show people that anything can go wrong at any time.
In the case that you see this rift, I was wondering, have you ever read the book death troopers. If you haven't, I really recommend it. It's a tad bit juvenile, but it's one of the only examples of Star Wars based horror. It's a really cool story
I really loved covenant, probably my 2nd favorite in the franchise after the first alien.
I liked covenant, however I definitely agree with your order when it comes to quality. Covenant lacked the suspense that was seen in both Alien and even in Aliens. SPOILER ALERT................ That being said, the characters being killed so quickly throughout covenant kind of reduced that feeling of building suspense. The xenomorph being somewhat cunning and almost enjoying killing it's prey was what made it so scary, not it's brute and relentless attacks. Just my two cents, Alien will always be number one even though I found some enjoyment in Covenant. I'd still see Covenant multiple times though as a fan of Ridley Scott's creation and imagination.
I believe Alien Covenant was pretty good but it lacked a bit of more horror than all the other movies. It had its share of gore and blood, but this one was probably more focused on finding out what happened to the Prometheus and maybe there was a bit to much talking and it was missing a bit of full on gore setting and it wasn't as suspenseful as all the other movies. I really enjoyed the insider idea of studying these aliens/creations, and learning more about their anatomy, their thinking, and other things. It had its psycho side to it too! It was really good!
I was hoping they would gives more insight into the "engineers" world, culture, their motives. We weren't given much and it only adds to the many mysteries. This film was Davids story and how his fascination with creation has changed him into quite the character. Something really interesting though is that the black chemical that was unleashed on Paradise only attacks non metallic organisms as said by David.
There is a very interesting theory that the planet in Covenant is not the Engineers home-world but another one of their creations, that is more linked to them than Earth is.
Covenant was great. I never saw Prometheus so I was lost on some of the plot but visually it was excellent.
The spoilers made me feel so many tingles 😍 I am so triggered 😍😍
I haven't seen a single Alien movie but I haven't seen a single scene of Covenant that made me want to see it. Especially Danny McBride.
when the ship comes down to the engineers home planet that is filmed in New Zealand
I know you said you like film, i don't know how you feel about films in other languages but I do highly recommend Train To Busan, it's am amazing movie on Netflix, but you do have to read the captions.
Hey rift can you do a video where you play with clay with rubber/latex gloves on?
I believe that the fact that the history is a mystery as the aliens are scarier that way.
have you watched twin peaks? O: and if you have what do you think of the new season?
Alien Covenant was a nice, solid movie. It was a safe movie, definitely a setup for the next installment.
I went and saw Covenant opening day... I really liked it but I think all of them are way to similar, like you said. I wish the timeline of events in each of the movies would be different in some way. The continuing of the story was very well done, its just the basic story of each movie with the station and the infecting is all way to similar to the last movies. Overall it was great though!
You should read the comics, the Fire And Stone event is pretty cool gives prometheus more story
Loved Alien Covenant
If you liked Alien, then you definetly should see that newer movie Life
I was curious about the origin of the spores too- I suppose they'd have to be a natural after-effect of David's bombardment on the environment. And perhaps then David began experimenting with both the spores and their Neomorphs. There's a series of miniature versions of the facehugger eggs in his labs, I suppose these started as the spores.
David as the creator of the alien bothers me. The alien was meant to be the embodied of "alien", in form and origin, and shrouded in mystery.
I'd like the concept better if David was only experimenting with pre-existing alien material (keeping the original Alien mystery intact).
It's also a shame that Shaw and her plot line with the engineers was cut short.
wasn't it confirmed that the prequel-series also gets 4 installments? that would mean, there might be an original alien-series sequel between the years 2030 and 2035
Check out "The Mist" 07 scifi horror! Also, predators in '10 you might like more so than the older ones!
+Ephemeral Rift I recomend you to watch event horizon and pandorum. Both are sifi and horror movies that take place in space.
Bless the day that you woke up and said: "Hey, I think I'm gonna do ASMR videos".
If you ask me that way, I think that the mystery about the Xenomorph origin is what made the franchise so special. There were so many forms of the Xenomorphs and so much different behaviours. A single warrior drone or an entire hive, but the origin remains unknown. That was one of the things which made them so terrifiying in the first place. I prefer to not accept the entire Covenant/Prometheus "prequels". Xenomorphs are not purely a randomized genetic result of a bio-weapon designed by some Albino Aliens, that idea destroys the entire credibility and fear factor
OHH! Where did u get this t shirt? this is AMAZING!
(I share your opinion about the film btw)
Paxton played "private hudson" michael biehn played "corporal hicks".
I was fine with not knowing where the Xenomorphs came from, but I like the idea of knowing how they came about. Although, I'm not a huge fan of how they're doing it.
Hard to believe Bill Paxton is gone. Makes me sad :(
I liked Alien Covenant a lot more than Prometheus myself. Yes, there were a couple of questionable moments, like them not wearing suits when they went down to the planet but at least they took the time to explain that they had scanned the atmosphere and had already determined there was breathable air. But for the most part, the internal logic of the movie was sound.
Prometheus on the other hand had people doing inexplicable and just plain dumb things the entire time. I guess you can say I'm "nitpicking", but it's hard for me to enjoy a movie when characters who are supposed to be scientists and other highly educated people are acting so stupid. Prometheus was one of those movies where the characters just do things to forward the plot, but don't behave rationally or believably. And there were so many unanswered questions, what is the black goo? Why did the engineer kill Weyland, etc. Just too much random stuff that was not explained.
One thing I've heard people complain about was the callbacks in Covenant. Personally, I thought they were pretty minimal and overall I thought they were cool little references for the fans, like the ship's computer being called mother, the title sequence and the crew being kind of "space truckers". I also really liked that the score was reminiscent of the classic music from Alien and Aliens.
People also have criticized the ending sequence as being derivative, but I thought of the last half hour as kind of a "bonus" sequence. After the middle of the movie with the dueling Fassbender roles, which was really the "meat" of the film and evoked thoughts about the creation of life and the human impulse to create our own works of technology/art, we got a classic bug loose on a ship scenario just to really scratch the Alien "itch". The shower scene I felt was a winking homage to the great horror movies and it worked in that context. I almost felt like people who didn't like this part of the movie were disappointed that Alien Covenant was in fact, an Alien movie. But hey, it's right there in the title people, that's what you signed up for! I will say though that the time frame of face hugger to chest burster to full grown alien being sped up greatly in this movie bugged me. This directly contradicted Alien where the facehugger was on Cain's face for hours and then him being fine for at least a couple more hours before the chest burst scene. If they were going to accelerate the development of the alien, it should have been addressed. Other than that though, I was satisfied with it and felt it was the best entry into the franchise since Aliens.
Anyway, thanks for the video ER, love all of your stuff, keep cranking them out!
I love these movie talks, I think you should do like a Marvel (MCU) video or maybe Harry Potter.
I think the closest one is Terminator to the aliens movies except the fact that it stopped being like a horror movie after the first movie
Covenant was amazing!!!!!!!!! You're the best. We would be such good friends with what you're into! My Alien list is close. Alien, Aliens, Covenant, Alien3, Prometheus, Resurrection...
I love the first two movies (and the Alien Isolation game, which takes place between the first two movies)
And yeah, Prometheus and Covenant were good, specially because of the Android protagonist/antagonist
An incredibly creative mind behind a fine handsome man. You are really a stand out Rift, keep it up.
The movie pitch black and Riddick were pretty comparable in the sci fi department, it kinda met in the middle for predator and alien by having vin diesel be a dominant male figure and dwindling crew vs monstrous mindless aliens. though the movies seemed to have less than stellar followings
I have a guitar painted by HR Giger ;)
Filip Persson :o wow!
I really love that t shirt 👽 I must look for it now.
I have a really serious question because I love space and aliens and planets and I really like knowing other people's opinions. anybody can reply, but my question is what kind of aliens do you think exist out here? like parasitic, predatory, friendly, anything. Life, Apollo 18, Alien, and Predator really fascinate me. makes me really wonder what's out there
