- I recently had my laptop upgraded from HDD to SSD. I was left with my old 2.5" SATA HDD. I bought a 2.5" disk enclosure so I could repurpose this old hard drive as an external hard drive.

Is there one for smaller HDDs? I’m planning on using one like this for a smaller HDD I pulled out of my HP Laptop that broke and plan to put it in another Laptop or possibly a PC. And I was wondering if there was one like this for Smaller HDDs since mines uses a Small HDD.
@@vegetaYT1 What's the size? There should be a case if the hard drive exists, but I havent seen yet a hard drive that's smaller than 2.5" unless it's the ones that look like strips used in newer laptops.
@@aliaseveIT well it’s not a Hard Drive as I just found out.
It’s actually a SSD.
I like your thoughts on finding ways to use old hardware. I have an old hard drive I've wanted to reuse for a while but I never could figure out what I needed to bridge the gap, so to speak. I wasn't even sure if the drive was IDE or SATA just to give you and idea of how technology challenged I am. So to make a long story short this was very helpful. So glad you posted this 👍
I'm glad this was helpful for you! 😁 Were you able to buy an enclosure?
@@aliaseveIT I didn't realize until now you had commented. I did indeed find an enclosure that allowed me to access pictures and documents I thought were lost forever. So to say this video was helpful would be a drastic understatement. Thanks for posting this out for those of us like myself who really just had no idea such things were available.
@@BosunM8James That's great!!! I'm glad you were able to recover your old files! 🥳
An easy way to tell the two apart is the data and power connections. IDE connections will be pins while SATA will be flat.
I'm currently using a 500gb laptop thin hdd in my home server. Works like a charm
That's awesome! 😁
my laptop is 263gb 😪
@@HenwyMaster Oh my, I assume the drive you have in there is around 320gb, because that is a standard size and 263Gb is not. My 500 gig hdd's also all only have around 450 gb. But for 2023 gaming, even 320gb is barely gonna cut it
@@DecayedPage no i mean i only have 236gb not 236gb used up
@@DecayedPage and all i use my laptop for is gaming 😔
Your short video was more informative than most of the full videos.
Thanks!
@@gurudatta_rao thanks! i try to keep it fast and simple!
Fr man, fr
You can also use it as a Time Machine backup
I do that too! 😄
Is it safe ??
Yeah, why? Time Machine is 100% safe.
Or delete it
Thanks for the information about SATA and IDE
I'm glad it was helpful! 😁
Also you wanna make sure the case is USB 3.0 rather than 2.0, 3.0 will allow to have the full speed of the hard drive (up to 150mb/s) cause 2.0 will limit even the slower hard drives (USB 2.0 reaches 60mb/s max)
If you just move smaller files it will be fine, but even stuff as small as 1 or 2GB will be much faster in 3.0
Great tip!
OMG I CAN FINALLY HAVE ALL MY OLD ROBLOX ACCOUNT AND PHOTOS WE HAD IN THAT OLD LAPTOP THAT DIDNT WORK THANK YOU UR THE BEST U GOT AN SUB😭😭😭😭
Yeyyyy glad it helped! Lemme know how it goes!
You didn't know about this?

I have two of those harddrives, I never knew that the reason they slide open is to switch out laptop harddrives
Learn something new! 😁
Been doing this for literally years now, soon to be having stacks of old 2.5s bought for additional storages, I also refuse to use "cloud" due to unreliable and expensive ISP service, so I'd rather buy another HDD, also thinking of building a dedicated local home server.
Hopefully all your important files are doubly backed up! 😁
"How to use hard drive externally?"
"Put in external case and use."
that pretty much sums it up!
The external case I bought has a removable lid, but it can also hold the older 3'5 in. sata as well. Good thing too, cos I got a backpack full of old drives from years ago.
Cool! My box of those are piling up. 😅
@@aliaseveIT you read backpack, right? ;)

Good decisions and Good information ❤
Thank you!
thank you it work it like my usb hhd🎉
Congrats!!! Enjoy your new external hard drive. 😄
I did this once but make sure the drive is healthy and not failing.
Yes!
My old HDD drive is corrupted but I have important files in it, what's a good way of recovering?
@puucca which hdd is that? Seagate? Usually manufacturers provide data recovery services
This is dope
Cool gadget
thanks!
Informative
thank you!
Wow..its nice❤
I have 2 desktops, one old and one new. I want to add my old desktop hdd into new one and sell the old desktop. Can I install 2 internal hdd in the desktop (inside the cpu cabinet)? If yes please tell the procedure for it. 😊
In my old desktop hdd the OS loaded is windows 7 and in the new one it is windows 10 (pirated version).
yes, you can! there's already a lot of videos explaining the process for this. make the primary hard drive (drive C) SSD then the old hard drives drive D for purely data.
Is the light supposed to blink or stay solid?
Not a 100% sure but I think stay solid. I think at the beginning it will blink then becomes solid.
FYI, almost ever HDD nowadays is SATA. IDE is very old and i would not recommend using IDE drives anymore, due to low speed and poor lifespan.
The goal is to reuse and not throw away stuff if it's still usable. It's true though that the transfer speed is pretty slow.
@@aliaseveIT I haven’t seen an IDE drive in literally forever, only SATA.
well no one would want a ide drive in a modern pc
you need to have an older motherboaed with a ide port
@@irek484j2 Exactly. Also because they’re so old they will likely fail soon.
I doubt I would trust with my data on those older ide hard drives so I would just use it as a games drive and I don’t mind the speed of those older drives. It tends to be as low as 50mb per second that is fast enough for me
Hi bro , can u please show how can I use iPod 80 gb hard drive as external and where do I get the case
While you can do that, I wouldn't recommend using old laptop hard drives like that. They tend to be pretty slow and as they are physical disks, they can break pretty easily when they get bumped.
good point!
As long as you don’t give shock to drive (that you should not do) then the drive should be fine to use
@@RusRus72 👍🏼
Then don't bump it.😂
Its no worst than any WD passport or Seagate external 2.5" hdd 😂
Yah but guys careful with tho driver do not shake or drop is can cause damage tooooooo much on u data also always use safe eject

Suggestion To Try Orico Kesu Enclosure
thanks for the tip!
I do have a old hard drive buts its ide it depends on me if i want a ide to sata for hard drive or an enclosure with ide
@@SaturnComputingtopic I think if it's IDE, it would be slow not for your computer. Better use it as an external hard drive. 😁
Don't touch the circuit board of hard drives, the salt from your hand can cause short circuits
Great tip!
I have a doubt, please clear it,,,...Doesn't it need power supply because hdd need direct power to run without damage
It gets its power from when you plug the USB connection. No other power supply needed.
@@aliaseveIT thanks, that's all I needed
Ma'am i have only desktop sata can you send me the enclosure link
Try this one: amzn.to/4bqIywB
@@aliaseveIT Thank you ma'am

My laptop can only use ssd or hard drive one at a time so i decided to put 170gb ssd in my laptop and use 500 gb as a external for my games and other files
cool! that's a good way to do it
How to delete the windows os in it
I use diskpart in command prompt but you have to be super duper careful to select the right drive before you erase the entire thing
Windows keep loading and never show the hdd.....it shows on my samsung phone with all the files
Maybe you haven't formatted it yet?
Do you know of a case for a 3.5 IDE drive, I can’t find one on Amazon anywhere
This one looks like IDE judging by the last photo: amzn.to/3PYWUwB
It also says in the description that it can do both IDE and SATA.
@@aliaseveITThank you!!!
I am not able to find hard drive data after making it external hdd
i got a enclosure and the connector thing fell out and now im using it without the case thing
Good thing it's still usable!
or get a sata to usb adapter and plug it in
Do we need to format the disk?
Yup! I use diskpart on CMD to clean the disk but you have to make 100000% sure you're using cleandisk on the correct drive and be careful not to erase your actual hard drive
Missed the laptop part at first and was confused on the whole video
Sorry about that!
@@aliaseveIT that was me, nothing wrong with the video
Okay, cool. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! 😀
What about computer's?
I thought this was a 3.5" drive because of the size of your tiny hand 🤣🤣

What adapter I need next too?
if you buy the case, it comes with an adapter that connects via USB!
Why did I get this after swapping The hdd from a 10 year old laptop to My 4 Month old pc.

For Some reason my old mbp pro has 2 internal drives 1 SSD 1 apple HDD when I got it Lol
😲 I didnt know those existed!
@@aliaseveIT for somereason the ssd was kinda slim and the hard drive was below it 0_0

Is the wire bought separately?
The wire comes with the case 😁 at least, it should. 😅

Plz tell me in my old hdd have 3 drive after add new sdd , after adding external hdd Old 3 drive will stay the same
Did you clone your old hard drive to the new drive or did you install everything from scratch? If you cloned it, it should be the same. If you installed from scratch, there will only be 1 drive.

Pc 3.5 hdd to usb connector
Windows is installed in my old pc HDD, can the data get corrupted if I use it as secondary storage? If yes, then how can I transfer the data in it to my laptop?
Clone it using macrium reflect to a new hard drive! Hopefully using SSD, not thr HDD
Can this be done with ssd as well?
Yes
Yes you can, but the external case itself might not fit since some SSD's might already come with its own case. If you can remove the screws on the external case and take out the connectors, you can plug it in directly on the SSD. 😄
Mine is a game drive in my cheap laptop
That's great! 😁
Why would I use this. SSD and external hard drives are cheap enough to avoid this. But if thats what you want to do no problem.
Just making the most of what's available instead of throwing it away. Sometimes, there are also others who've got data they need to recover. As for me, I got my case for less than $4 over here.
@@aliaseveIT that's true. I live In the states we throw away a lot of electronics that we dont need anymore. We need to be more re-using friendly here.
@@ThePrankDudesI got a couple internal Hard drives for free from work they were gunna throw away. I need/want one but not bad enough to buy an actual external hard drive.

USE AN NVME DRIVE THE SATA CONNECTOR IS LIMITING THE SPEED OF THE DRIVE.
Thanks for the tip!
Put can the hdd run at full speed like sata
When i connect it on usb 3.0 port
sorry for english type
Sata works at 6Gb per second, while usb 3.0 has a theoretical maximum speed of 5.8 Gb per second and Becuase hard drives never reach the 6Gb speeds you should not see a performance difference between them unless if your using usb 2.0
How to format it
I used diskpart in Command Prompt (windows). You have to be really careful with the steps because you might end up erasing your main computer hard drive.
Ya i did that but this hdd are as slow as my crush replies.

Ah what's the use get an external nvme disk cause that junj is useless
The purpose is just to find use for things instead of throwing them away
@@aliaseveIT yeah if you would have 10 of them you could make a home NAS from them cause in a raid 5 and with a Optane cache you could use them as long as those are 7200 rpm and up ,some usb ports in some laptops have just 15 Mb/s transfer speed and some have just 1 high speed port exposed and adding external hdd on a 15Mb/s port on storage you will just get annoyed it is faster to just get an cloud drive like , google or OneDrive, even from your phone sometimes it is faster to transfer the files from one device to another through wi-fi then connecting on usb, shore there are also high end laptops that behave like a desktop those are not everywhere. Every laptop that costs under 2000€ doesn't have a very good IO
Why when you can get a £3 sata to usb 3 cable and job done
