I remember being 19 or 20 and wanting to sign up at a college sport bar down the street from where I lived. I wasn't allowed to enter the tournament because I wasn't a black belt in anything. They wanted karate black belts or Kung Fu black sashes and Brazilian Jiujitsu which was new at the time and boxers who had some amateur fights or golden gloves or pro and I didn't have that.
What I did have was training just to train and I followed the Bruce Lee way even before I knew who he was. I wanted to learn everything and anything. I would wrestle my cousin who went to state and handle him easily and I was 5'8" and 155 lbs. I had over 100 fights on the streets beating high school kids when I was 11 and by 16, I was fighting grown ups and laying them out so I knew how to fight and I didn't think I would win the tournament but I was looking to get notice because I was poor at the time and needed a job.
I moved away from doing that when I had a work accident that kept me out of that and a 75th Ranger contract in the Army. Damn! Life sucks and then we die but I got saved by Jesus Christ and that's the most successful thing a person could do in life and I accomplished that. Good day!
