The Cinematic Mythology of Led Zeppelin

- When a movie or TV show uses a pre-existing song rather than an original composition, it is referred to as a needle drop. Needle drops in film and television are a dime-a-dozen, but when the needle drop is a Led Zeppelin song, something special happens. There is an eerie sense of wonder; the scene takes on a new life and almost inherits a somewhat mythic quality. It’s fitting that the band’s ethos is heavily rooted in mythology- Zeppelin lyrics cover everything from Norse mythology to The Lord of the Rings- because when it comes to film and television production, Led Zeppelin has a mythical aura. The band’s remaining members are extremely picky when it comes to licensing their music. From Richard Linklater to Taika Waititi, countless filmmakers have tried (and often failed) to acquire Led Zeppelin song rights. So, for a work to be allowed to utilize one of their songs is something special (the recent HBO series, Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams, is a prime example). A Led Zeppelin song creates a distinct, mystical and compelling feeling and, perhaps most of all, it’s a feeling filled with purpose.

You know, I love it that they didn't let Stairway be used in any films. It stays incredibly pure that way.
"Put on the first side of Led Zeppelin IV"
*Kashmir plays*
That's...that's not on IV
That's The Joke
The band wouldn’t let them use it, but did let Kashmir be featured.
hinney827 I always felt that it added to Ratner’s awkwardness.
I thought that too
Yeah I always thought it was because Black Dog and Rock and roll are pretty unoffensive rock songs then as they make out they get to Evermore and Stairway, the more tender stuff. Then Ratner puts on Kashmir from side 2 of PG which is full of heavy stuff, and Kashmir is 8 minutes. Absolutely not romantic XD Seems like a very niche joke though
That scene in School of Rock with Immigrant Song was iconic. Such a great part of the movie.
True, but Thor Ragnarok put it to better use. It was EPIC!
Whenever a Led Zeppelin song appears in a scene, the scene epicness level increased over the max

After watching Dazed and Confused for the first time I was genuinely confused why they hadn't put the Zeppelin song in it, and now 2 years after watching i've got my answer. Thanks!
How did you find the film?

i was never going to start watching Sharp Objects without this video.. yes i'm that obsessed with Led Zeppelin
For real though that immigrant song scene in ragnarok was great
Which scene? Second one was epic!
The second one was absolutely brilliant
One of the title characters in Supernatural has always claimed(well, at least back when Kripke was the showrunner) that Zeppelin is his favorite band, but since they can't afford to use their music, they had to settle using the songs to name the episodes.
Dean has 2 favorite songs. One is Ramble On.

When you referred to songs based on mythic tales why didn’t you just say The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings? It’s not a secret.
Because Led Zeppelin refers to more than just Tolkiens mythology. Many of Zeppelins songs also referred to Greek Mythology (Achillies Last Stand) and Norse Mythology (No Quarter and Immigrant Song)
Sir Spice Not to mention the heavy influence of Celtic folk music and the neo-druid mythology that it entails
Plants mum was Romani which influenced his lyrics alot too
Nice edit with the needles between Sharp Objects and Oblivion

Zeppelin is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning... and the end. Amen.
Simon Sozzi %100 agreed
Hahaha, dude, they ain't that good. Frequently terrible in concert. Jimmy "bum notes" Page.
When I was a teenager my bedroom was a shrine to them. Saw them at Knebworth.
Love some of their music. Too much mythology around them now.
No single band can make that claim.
Watch what you say: czcams.com/video/JMR9DdYiA-w/video.html
*Sal Paradise* Rubbish they are the Beatles of the 1970's. I saw them too and have seen 100's of concerts. Some truly great none like Led Zeppelin. I was at Knebworth though whether we were there on the same night (I was at the 2nd better one) I don't know. Of course being improvisers they did have less good nights and they also did slowly decline after their live peak in 1973 (should have quit in 1975 after Presence as abuse sucked their life force away. But as 'The Song Remains the Same' proves at their best no one equaled them. Go watch the HD versions of 'Dazed and Confused', 'Since I've been loving you' or 'No Quarter' etc all of which improve on the already awesome LP versions. Only Hendrix or The Dead 68-78 compare!
About the Wayne's World bit: in the original theatrical release, Mike Meyers actually played the opening riff to 'Stairway to Heaven.' Even though it was just four notes, Zeppelin sued, and on all subsequent versions, the riff is replaced with random junk, making the joke nonsensical. While their music is hard to get, they have never licensed Stairway in to anyone. Cameron Crowe tried hard as hell to use it in Almost Famous, to no avail (there is a deleted scene on the dvd entirely about the song, which has a watermark for the audience to play it at the appropriate time).
never knew that about Wayne's World
considering how much they ripped off of blues artists, you'd think they'd cut Meyers some slack on a four note gag
The Stones, Beatles, Allman Brothers, CCR, Paul Butterfield, Canned Heat, Cream, Eric Clapton, The Doors, Johnny Winter, The Byrds, Stephen Stills, The Who, The Yardbirds, all also took from blues artists. Basically any person who touches the guitar after 1965 took from blues artists in some form or another. Copyright laws are needed to ensure that the artist's work does not land in the hands of greedy people, but it can also be a tricky thing to deal with. The video below touches upon the ways in which bands like the Stones gained the rights over songs they didn't really write, and why/how it happened, why/how it needed to happen.
czcams.com/video/I_s90-Hi2ZY/video.html
Copping a riff is one thing, stealing a song is another czcams.com/video/pTsvs-pAGDc/video.html
the stones literally gave the singers their due diligence by singing with them in concert, case in point howlin' wolf
This is the first and only video I've seen of yours. Job well done. It was presented nicely.
Francis Ford Coppola being able to feature The Doors song “The End” during several key scenes in Apocalypse Now helped spark a new interest in that bands music. I think Led Zep considered that when they eased up on the permissions. But you will never hear a Doors song in a car commercial unlike Zeppelin.
Yet Led Zeppelin is far greater then the Doors, I’d guess they got a hell of a lot of money for it, I believe they said seven figures.
What's cool about the 'diabetic/non-diagetic' thing is that Baby Driver completely mixes the two. I guess musicals do the sane thing, but BD does it naturally and without breaking the fourth wall or having the characters sing.
In The Light in the last scene of Minderhunter Season 1
It was a really good use of the song
@@maggiemcfly5267 seriously great use of the song! Made the finale that much better

I was waiting for that to come out on here.
In the light was actually the song that opened my ears for Led Zep I believe 25-30 yrs ago... Masterpiece
Wow loved the video!
nice video man
Led Zeppelin , Pink Floyd, and Black Sabbath are my tops I can't chose between them but usually the choice is Led Zeppelin. Wish we had their magick in todays music.
What a great video !
Zeppelin are Gods.
The greatest rock band of all time
Hey... How many of you seen Robert Plant live this year?
I saw him in Melbourne, awesome show
Going to see him September 10th in Kansas City!
Really nice. I'm a huge fan but I didn't know they were featured in all those movies. I got a little choked up, I'm not gonna lie.
Movies which get the Led Zeppelin blessing tend to become huge hits/cult classic.
This is why so many films try to snag one to gain this gift.
Well said. I’m so sick of these clowns accusing zep of plagiarism. Sure, they stole a ton and didn’t credit (dazed and confused etc.) but any of the blues stuff they took from say, Robert Johnson, were just his interpretations of slave songs that had been around since the 1700’s. Haters are all the same. Zep rules and always will. Nobody will ever come close. Out!
The argument is very simple.
There is a big difference between Paying Homage and Plaigerism.
Zeppelin did not steal, they borrowed from blues as all blues artist did. They just took it to another level and added some extra ingredients
Remember hearing early Zeppelin in a mid 70s late night movie about a youth in the UK....wish I could remember the song or the movie
God damnit. Now i have to watch all of these shows and movies. But its worth it.
Zeppelin's the best
Every year, I switch favs. Last year was ‘Battle of Evermore. ‘ This year is ‘Out on the Tiles.’ Otto said it best, Zepplin Rules!

Then again, maybe not…
I picture Good Times Bad Times in a fast paced action scene.
Not really, hardly the style of oldies GoG puts in their soundtracks

YOU LEFT OUT SMALL SOLDIERS (1998). Still incredibly surprised that movie snagged some Zeppelin songs.
Every time I hear led zeppelin song in a movie something important is about to happen

Led Zeppelin is the best rock band ever

Gotta throw in the finale of Mindhunter too, In the Light plays while he has a panic attack
they are powerful stuff, aren't they? .... i can't tell you how wonderful it was growing up while their stuff was being released new.... the first time i heard Stairway, i honestly felt as if i was experiencing a past life regression session, like i had lived my life in the enchanted English forests, among the gnomes and faeries lol .... huzzah!! ....

almost famous is so amazing
There's a deleted scene in Almost Famous where William shows his mom Stairway. There's a watermark and you have to play the song yourself but its a truly great scene.
Allways wondered why there were no Zep songs in the movie Dazed and confused thx for answering that question 🤔
i love classic rock
LZ is my favorite band, I've known for a while Plant was a big nerd :P
Revolution??!! I was watching an episode while playing some Zep in the background, when all of a sudden, the exact song I was playing was being played in the background of the episode I was watching! AT THE SAME TIME!!
Amy Adams was so good in sharp objects
Rock on brother
Can you do one of these for the Beatles? If they have music in films that is. That would be awesome
It is even harder to obtain Beatles songs than Led Zep songs. It was wonderfully used in Mad Men bc the production had to pay a tremendous amount of money to obtain it.
*School of Rock pleads to use Immigrant Song in integral part of their movie*
"Hmmmm I dunno. Maybe if you beg more."
*Shrek 2 puts it over fighting squirrels*
"Deal."
GOAT
Then how much money did the producers of Almost Famous had? The rain song, bron-y-aur, and I think there are a couple more zep songs in there
Thanks m8, forgot it was mentioned in the video (:
That's the way as well
Cameron Crowe is buddies with them from back in the day. I don't think he has to pay the retail price.
Sebas Crowe also flew ro London to give the band members a private screening of the completed film ( including their songs ), and the band liked it so much that they gave him permission ( at what cost? I don't know), but they asked him to remove Stairway from it. No way they're giving that one.
Zeppelin made some great music, it should be in a bunch of movies
Sadly they will be once the remaining members die
good god, you're right, Miguel. That is actually so depressing.
@@123456pfloyd yup I love Led Zeppelin and I hope Robert, Jimmy, and John live for a long time from now
But seriously, what's going to happen when they all pass away? Is some lame commercial going to use Floyd's 'Us and Them' to entice people to buy a car? I never thought of this..
@@123456pfloyd that's a good question and honestly I have no idea but that does seem like it could happen
Thor and immigrant song are the best song and character ever. It literally mentions Thor’s hammer in the song. Shoot to thrill and iron man is also really good
also, Immigrant Song in one of the Shrek movies, also, led zeppelin song in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
One of my fav childhood movies was “Dark Crystal” I loved the mystical story, later on I discovered Led Zeppelin and heard their slow mystical songs. Every one of those songs took me back that feeling I had when I first seen “Dark Crystal”. This is exactly how I want to feel when I listen to music. Zep captured that mystical feeling.
When I hear this scene, I’m always half expecting them to break into a cover is “Stairway to Heaven”
czcams.com/video/HBUEGrIcfzw/video.html
But this scene is so.....Zeppelinish in a way I can’t explain.
Time to play some Zepp,
Black Sabbath’s “Odin’s Court/Winds Of Valhalla” off of ‘Tyr’ would’ve been GREAT for ‘Thor’.
‘When The Levee Breaks’ in “Sucker Punch”...
Linklater should have just asked Jake Holmes permission to use "Dazed and Confused", seeing as he was the person who originally wrote it.
Never seen that HBO show, but I had a friend in hs that killed herself after discussing zeppelin lyrics with me. I didn't know til the next day.
"When a Led Zeppelin song graces a scene" the special thing that happens is a check goes to the owners of the publishing rights
A few people know this, but Dazed and Confused is a cover and not made by Zep.
he must like Susan Jacobs because she’s used his songs in almost every film she supervises
i like the fact they (swan song) keep the music close to the vest and not have it used to promote anything other than the band itself. Thanks to the late Mr. Grant who paved the way to that end. Led Zeppelin is not for sell, thank you.
Led Zeppelin is very much for sale it's just that there are a shit ton of zeros on the price label.
@@salparadise1220 Not for sale bro..Only if page, plant and Jones gives permission. Money comes next
What's funny is that Kashmir isn't even on lz4.
Zeppelin evrr
Should have added the scene from Big Short.
You mean to tell me you’ve never got the lead out?! WHAT ARE THEY TEACHING YOU?!?
It speaks to the power of the band's prestige, more than the power of their music. This isn't a disrespectful comment. I just don't feel uncomfortable with blanket statements about popular art. Many times we disregard the art and artists that lead to something like Led Zepplin and then mindlessly consuming that manifestation. To the point of turning it into something it isn't, A deity.
Led Zeppelin is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, Amen.

Wow I thought the guy was taking about Greta Van Cover Band. Who the heck is Led Zeppelin? j/k
Hey Fandor I've been a Zeppelin fan since I first heard them in 1979, I was 12, I had every single album and the later collections, I was obsessed and dismissed the rumours until I ended up confirming that Plant and Page are Satanists to the core...you might think it's a joke, I did too, until I saw the fear in Plant's face when in a recent interview he was asked about the lyrics of Stairway.

However, that « Led Zeppelin effect » you’re talking about is basically just the way how music works with moving images. I don’t see what is so specific about Led Zeppelin in movies, although it’s probably my favorite band of all time.
The immigrant song is probably one of the best uses of a song in movie. Sure, there may be better ones but I am been biased.
