I was a 1st class Hospital Corpsman with Company D, 4th Recon Battalion as senior Medical Dept Rep. I was personally awarded the Navy Commendation Medal by Maj General Livingston, CG 4th MarDiv. He bore a very commanding presence in person yet a very personable demeanor. He said "Doc, thank you for taking care of my Marines." My reply was "That's my job sir!" This is the only award I received signed by a flag rank officer. All others by a navy captain or below. Navy Corpsmen take care of their Marines, Marines take care of their Corpsmen. Oo-rah!

Bet you the Vietnam veterans have not forgotten Hanoi Jane.
I may not have been old enough to serve but I have forgotten her either.

I also had the honor of serving under Gen. Livingston in England back in 1980. I was a young Marine, fresh out of bootcamp and I.T.S., at my first duty station. He was my Commanding Officer. I sensed there was something special about this man. It wasn't until a few years later I learned he is a MOH recipient, and, they say, the rest is history. He is an awesome human being, and for the short time I served with him, he still inspires me.
And, boy, could he run. Semper Fi General.

General Livingston gave me my Navy Achievement Medal in 1992 when he was the Commanding General of the 4th Marine Division and I was a young Hospital Corpsman serving with his Marines. I just learned a couple of years ago about what he had done in Vietnam.
